I I W€$TLRK€ s moPxS tD ieAent Miss Christine Saloom WE, THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1946. TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN DEDICATING THIS. THE FIRST ANNUAL OF WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL. TO MISS CHRISTINE SALOOM. OUR FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR. FOR THE WHOLE-HEARTED CO-OPERATION SHE HAS GIVEN US IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS BOOK POSSIBLE. r No+e: Our principal, Mr. B. M. Woodad, came to us in 1940 from LaGrange High School where he had served as Assistant Coach. He was with us for three years during which time the students came to admire and respect him. In 1943 Mr. Woodard enlisted in the United States Navy and was commissioned a Lieutenant j.g. After serving a while on a submarine he was moved to the Aleutians where he instructed students in anti-submarine warfare. In December of 1945, after 32 months of service, Mr. Woodard received his discharge and returned to take over his old positiqn as Principal, which Mr. Lloyd Johnson so efficiently filled during his absence. With the new ideas and enthusiasm that he has brought back with him, we all are assured that Westlake High School shall go on to greater achievement. B. M. The photographs of the candidates which you submitted were all so attractive that I found it difficult to choose the winners. It was also extremely difficult to reach a decision without actually seeing the contestants and talking to them. The winners were chosen on the basis of character, personality and intelligence, as well as for natural beauty. My choice was influenced, of course, by n y great interest in and admiration for the Natural Girl. If any of the participants are ever in New York, it would be a pleasure to see them. With best wishes to the contestants, to the students of Westlake High School and to the staff of your annual; I am Sincerely yours. bEAU TIES ' volute, tf2owui' b E A U TIE S w owmj6o GjCkA iA £ est All-Kound £ oy 02lc atet Dick. Lavona Cochran Barbara Abshire Secretary Treasurer The teen-agers at Westlake High School wanted some kind of recreation on week-ends other than going to shows, therefore an organization was formed by the teen-age group of our school to give us the sort of entertainment that we wanted. The club was named Kid Kanteen because it was for teen-age students and it was decided that we meet each Friday night. In November, 1944, we elected our first officers, who were: Dick Vines ...................... President Donna Cochran .............. Vice-President Marjorie Sutherland...............Secretary Angelee Managan ................. Treasurer Miss Christine Saloom, who was largely responsible for the success of our club, was elected as our Faculty Sponsor. We owe a great deal of thanks to Mr. Leonard, of the Industrial U.S.O., and Mr. Garrett, of the Y.M.C.A. The Kanteen has games, dancing and refreshments, which can be bought at the Snack Bar. At present the Klub has approximately 100 members. The present officers are: Bud Gaines Donna Cochran Frances Vines.. Remaining from the organization of 1944-45 were Mary Lee, Donna Cochran, Angelee Manegan, Murl Ravia, Dorothy Lee Widcamp, Juanita Hanbrick, Maxine Barnes, Barbara Abshire, LaVera Barrentine and Shirley Hudson. Joining TRI-HI-Y this year were Patsy Guillory, Mary Jane McDonald, Pat Hawkins, Joy Ray Blume, Betty Wood and Betty Ruth James. One of our most enjoyable projects was putting on the play Bobbie Socks With the money received from this we purchased a leather chair for the office. We, also, had a sign put up directing people to Westlake. 4 -Jt CM - Susan Carver President Lionel Hawkins Garnet Herford Carolyn Pulliam Vice President Secretary Treasurer Jane Gaines Wayne Pettijohn Wanda Brown Mary Ann Hawkins Cheer Leader Cheer Leader Reporter Reporter Club Sponsors Mrs. Vera Pulliam Miss Charlotte MacCurdy HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY . Without a coach the Rams' chances of having a winning team looked very slim. But Mr. O. O. Ogden came to our assistance and offered his coaching ability absolutely free. Coach Ogden took over the team, coaching the Rams in his spare time. Coach Ogden produced a very good team in 1944-45 for the Rams won the majority of their games. Coach Ogden not only coached the Rams in 1944-45 but returned to coach them in 1945-46. Under Coach Ogden's direction the Rams swept aside all opposition and captured the District Trophy. The school is quite proud of Coach Ogden and the students sincerely appreciate his free service to our school. Front Row, left to right: Don Rue, Dick Vines, Buddy Prejean and Pete Gammage.
