As you turn the page-s ot this review, you recapture at a glance the happiness ot many ot these scenes: the football games under the bright tloodlights, the bustle ot many behind-the-scene activities, the- laughter and joking between scenes, and learning our parts in the classroom. The year of l95l and i952 packed much comedy and excitement, and even a sprinkling ot pathos into this exceptionally fine drama. We, the understudies, wish to extend to our stars the best of luck in all their future- productions. 7a 77044 faaaldnnf 14. Wayan . . . We dedicate this, our yearbook of '52, for her long hours of hard work, for her patience and understanding, and for her constant desire to make our school a better one. The- Westlake Band, which she organized six years ago, placed third in strong competition at the Charity Game and played also in the spring con- cert. Miss Voyner, looking toward the future, has worked hard with her junior band with the idea of replacements for oursgraduates. Whe-n we think of the success of our gleefclub and band, we must re- member and feel grateful for the energy that she puts forth behind the scenes. To you, Miss Voyner, with these things in mind, we- dedicate the Panorama of 'l952. , . c five ln appreciation of our faithful office girl, Doris, we cannot fully express our gratefulness for her many efforts. Doris can well be credited with helping to ke-ep our school's business and activities running smoothly and efficiently. Her help to Mr. Read and Mr Burneson in the office has been priceless. Doris does not limit her work to just that which is required. For instance, one telephone call may have her going all through the school searching for a person to answer it. Doris helps with our schedules, sells us our supplies, and does what she can for the faculty. ln putting all these things to- gether, we can truly realize how worthy and deserving Doris is of our vote of thanks for her competent services here at Westlake. ln honoring Mr. Edward Rasmussen, our science and math teacher, we must not forget his patience in our laboratory, as well as in the classroom, in teaching us some very difficult subjects, Mr. Rasmussen has, not just this year, but for many years, been the Juniors' able advisor in planning the magazine campaigns, the Jun- ior-Senior Banquet, and the Junior dance. When we think of Mr. Rasmussen, we think of efficiency. This has been proved many times over by his fine, organized committees, and the wonderful re- sults he gets from his students. The Juniors can certainly attribute their success to Mr. Rasmussen's fine leadership. Once again a bigger and better Panorama has been produced, and once again we can credit our achie-vement to the long hours of hard work by our advisor, Miss Marilyn Hackett. Miss Hackett's democratic and efficient guidance has given our staff a feeling of security, for her optimism, even through the worst times, has re- lieved the always-present pressure and rush that a Panorama staff must go through. Thank you, Miss Hackett, on behalf of the whole school for your efforts in giving us a fine annual. To these people we express our gratitude. However, we do wish to thank the faculty for their sincere efforts to make us all more intelligent and better citizens. Dave Beato . . .Torn Michelich S tee I The main characters-and we do mean characters -of this old-fashioned variety show-marched on stage for their premiere performance back in Se-ptember, l94O. This first act was a real Frankenstein horror skit, with little Dave Beato, Rachel Cooley, Sally Davis, Arlene Hanzely, Freddie Harbath, Kenny Kauffman, Billy Kohler, Tommy Miche-lich, Eric Moeller, Roger Richards, Dorothy Siferdin, Pat Stanich, Lenny Thomsen, and Bobby Wise starring as the little monsters who terrorized Miss Davis. The next feature brought Allan Pohlman, Dick Runser, and Shirley Ruddy before the footlights. Roger Richards, however, stole the show by singing l'm a Lonely Little Pe- tunia in an Onion Patch amid strains of lovely operetta music. The third act was a style show, featuring Gail Friedrich and Dorothy Wentling as the mode-ls in their first appearance on the Westlake stage. When the group reached the fourth grade-whoops--we mean act -the child stars changed from their horror costumes, etc., and appeared on stage, joined by Gary Greive, Dolores and Dorothy Harvey, and Juanita McDaniel, in dancing costumes. In the act, and continuing through the fifth, these dancers moved from corner to corner of the stage in an interpretive dance symbolizing the moving of school children from room to room. ln the sixth act, Caroline and Miriam Hessenthaler appeared on stage to join the cheering section in the Army-Navy game. The seventh act was a military skit depicting a group of sailors on leave. New en- listees Lois Fischer, Jim Garrity, and Shirley Ruddy fwho had left in the sixth act and had just returned? along with the rest of the company, expected many leaves and liberties, until Mr. Scott changed their plans. The solo appearance of Donna Rempher, who hadn't been on stage before this, was the feature of the eighth act, and this troupe was joined in the 9th selection by the quintet of Bernice Biltz, Pat Humpal, Arline Klaameyer, Adeline- Krone, and Harvey Wentling. The next scene-the tenth grade-the little monsters who had developed into crea- tures occasionally resembling ladies and gentlemen presented a colorful dance entitled Festival of Spring. Working with the other stars was a newcomer, Doris DeSimoni. lt was in this new scene, too, that the bright new sweaters of green and gold emerged. In the next act, Norman Boardman, Clara Diesler, Aggie Hart, and Dee Polansky joined the company on stage, first in costumes suggesting hard work, and later in formal attire suggesting dreamy, romantic dancetime. The grand finale, including Lloyd Hoag as a newcomer, saw forty-two great stars lined up across the stage. Curtain call after curtain call, and twe-Ive years of successful running on the Westlake stage have brought the show to a conclusion. Now the producers are putting the show on the road to bring the great entertainment to the rest of the world! SEVeDfE9n emfvz 7065! In the interest of welfare for our inexperienced underclassmen we, seniors of '52, wish to extend these, our useful traits and characteristics, our policies of good will, our fine personalities, our good looks, our ability to get out of making up time, our accurate eraser shots, and anything we have which may enable them to graduate as successful as we. To the juniors, to whom we are not longer brothers, we give the power to dominate your underclassmen. To the sophomores, we bequeath Mr. Rasmussen and Miss Wilson and any magazines you can find for your coming campaign. The play is Why?, produced by Phil Richard, dec- orated by Norman Boardman, and adapted by Shirley Ruddy from Adeline Krone's novel, Why Not? As the curtain goes up, we see those famous stars, Lloyd Hoag and Sally Davis, dancing in a glittering ballroom to the music of James Garrity's Band. Just as the well-known night club singer, Constance Grugle, ste-ps up to the mike in a stunning gown designed by Delores Polansky, Gail Friedrich runs in with a gun in her hand. Seeing Sally dancing with Lloyd, she slinks over and hits Sally on the- head with the gun. As Sally falls unconscious, Gail rushes out with the policeman, Harvey Wentling, hard after her. End of first act. The second act begins in the jail, where' Gail's lawyer, Thomas G. Michelich, is trying to get Gail out of jail. While the lawyer is arguing, Bill Kohler, the Chief of Police, comes in. Following him are Caroline Hessenthaler and the newspaper reporter, Bernice' Biltz. After Gail is put into her cell, everyone leaves except Gail and Bill. As the night wears on, Bill falls asleep. Soon there is a tapping on Gail's cell window. Looking out, she sees her friend, Leonard Thomse-n, who runs a very respectable bar on the outskirts of the town. Leonard breaks the window, and Gail escapes. Leonard takes her to the bar, where Patricia Stanich serves them milk, and they watch Rachel Cooley and Dorothy Harvey dance. End of second act. Intermission. As intermission begins, we hear the voice of Fred Harbath selling flash- lights in the balcony. Before the' theater lights are all on, Gary Greive, the theater mana- ger, charges down the aisle and throws out Richard Runser, a rubber band manufacture-r, who has been shooting spit wads. When the lights are on, we look around and see Dolores Harvey, who is president of the local Busine5smen's Association, Shirley Heckerman, who sells engagement rings at a shop in New York, Eric Moeller, who is head of the Moe's De- partment Stores, Dorothy Wentling and Dorothy Siferdin, who manage the Dorothys' Beauty Salon, and the play critic, Miriam Hessenthaler. Everybody is running for a seat, the lights are going out, and the last act begins. The scene is at the wedding of Lloyd Hoag and Sally Davis. When the act begins, we- hear Roger Richards singing hillbilly songs and see on one side Sally's mother, Pat Humpal, crying softly, and on the other side, Lloyd's mother, Arline Klaameyer, crying loudly. As we- look up farther, we see that the preacher, Kenneth Kauffman, who is ready, and that the maid of honor, Arlene Hanzely, is crying, and that the bridesmaids, Doris DeSimoni, Agnes Hart, and Clare Diesler, are very ne-rvous. Now we hear Lois Fischer singing to the accom- paniment of Donna Rempher on the organ. As the tying words are spoken, we- look to the back of the church and see Gail and Leon- ard sitting very quietly. Just then, Gail's lawyer comes in and tells them Gail is free. When they hear this, Leonard and Gail run out of the church to the house around the corner, where they are- married by the Justice of the Peace, Allan Pohlman, with his wife as a witness. As the curtain goes down, and amid the applause of the audience, we leave the theater. Outside, we see Juanita McDaniel sleeping in the ticket box. ,We wake her, and agree that the theate-r's opening night was a grand success. twenty twenty-one fSee page 675 CSee page 675 twenty-two Si vi X n A6 N236 1 K , 'j -W Rig, QNF '2ifi V 551, T- 'iw - , -Xxx, Q . Mr. Biehle has taught the members how to make ceramics and plastic jewelry, to design material, and to do water color painting. The club had a juke box dance after one of the basketball games and went on a sketching trip in the spring. The purpose of the club is to enable the members to learn more about the different types of art and to help beautify the school. forty-six forty-seven Standing-D. Beato, J. Irsak, R. Pohlman, L. Round Robin game at Cuyahoga Heights field, Westlake Demons would not yield. The- Juniors were making money again On their annual magazine campaign. Here was a welcome holiday Thanks to N.E.O.T.A. The Bay game was exciting-but-oh, myl lt ended in a scoreless tie. Our team was made up of some pretty swell guys. A banquet and dance was their football prize. The Junior Dance in November Was a highlight that we'll all remember. Thanksgiving vacation All over the nation. - At the Charity Game our band was heard And we're proud to say they came in third. WINTER Brooklyn beat us at basketball Oh well, our team can't win them all. Olmsted's first loss in 23 tries Happened when they met our guys. Three days' vacation because of snow, Too bad - it cancelled our Christmas show. Everyone took his vacation to heart But after ten days, school had to start. Exams came, as they always do, And the teachers found out how little we knew. Three cheers for good old Washington, Another holiday - lots of fun. The Leap Year Dance was really great The boys found out how much they rate. This year our school ran a big contest, And chose the Alma Mater that was the be-st. Our brains were worn out, our teachers were peeved, But 'twos Easter vacation and everyone was relieved. SPRING When warm weather comes 81 balls appear lt's plain to see that baseball's here. The Sophomores put on their spring dance - Their first real try at high finance. Each Sophomore got a beautiful sweater The Juniors thought their rings were better. ln Pride of May the girl's Glee Club sang And the band's music through the auditor- ium rang. The Junior-Senior Banquet then was here, The social highlight of the year. The Seniors are good, there's no doubt of that, Their play was tops from where we sat. The Seniors had their final fling At their Prom in the spring. Baccalaureat on 'Sunday eve, A service for Seniors before they must leave. The Seniors heaved a plaintive sigh For Commencement Day at Westlake High. Summer's here - school is done, We-'ve got three months to have some fun. fini M J SLJ 2:11 sixty-eignt
