Ivxllll. fifteen Glass As the seniors turn to take their last look at Dover High, let us amble down through the years and account for each, as it leisurely found its way into the past. 1937 FIRST GRADE -- The day of all days! They enter school for the first time. Many are running ahead, so as not to miss the fun, and others are lagging behind, doubting if school in all its radiance will be as much fun as anticipated. A few are peeking out from be- hind their mothers' skirts, while still others are finding some sort of mischief to commit. All in all, our little gang consists of nineteen. The roll reads something like this: John Kohler, Barbara Schuck, Jean Schuster, Joyce Reed, Lois Alsup, Isabel Mosher, Glenn Simonds, Dick Cornish, Roger Cooley, Greg Burneson, John Michelich, Betty Irsak, Bill Kubach, Ed- ward Hennie, Allen Hennie, Frances Guercio, Jo-Ann Ivissmany John Alsup, and Reuben Cooley. 1938 SECOND GRADE - Ruth Fischer and Barbara Smith joined the class this year. 1939 THIRD GRADE -- The class in- creased by three this year. They were Richard Eberling, Paul VVise, and Bill Dorrow. Al- ready the boys had begun to notice the girls. According to Al Hennie, the boys used to fight over the girls quite often. 194-0 FOURTH GRADE - A1 VVelker, Dave Collins, and Bev Jaqusch entered the up- and-coming class this year. 19-L1 FIFTH GRADE - This vear brought five new members to Dover, including Carol Overmyer, Sammy Spooner, Paul Spen- cer, Milly Gaydos, and Joanne Fox. It didn't take Foxy long to get situated, as she remem- bers how much fun she had riding on the backs of the Hennie twins and how, as a con- sequence, she spent many a painful hour in the principal's office. Then there was the annual Army and Navy baseball game and the basketball game between the 5th and 6th grades, which are still in the memory of all who at- tended. 19-112 SIXTH GRADE - Cathy Schwartz was the only new member 'midst our darlings Hisfots' this year. By this time the 49'ers really had the ball rolling. It was this year that Red broke his knuckle fighting with some of the boys, and Dolly and Milly kept the teachers in constant confusion as to which one each was. Again they played the annual Army and Navy basketball games. 1943 SEVENTH GRADE - Came the mark of distinction! They put away their childish ways and forgot their lesser idols of the past, for they had at last made that great journey from the little old g1'ade school to the magnificent splendor of the high school. Harry Howarth was the only new pupil who joined the class this year. Isabel Mosher, however, returned after attending a Catholic school for two years. And lastly, this year we all solemnly remember the death of our teacher, Mr. Seneff. 1944 EIGHTH GRADE - All have be- come accustomed to the big high school and most of the pupils are studying hard and look- ing forward to that freshman year with all its sports, clubs, dances, and parties. There were no increases in the enrollment this year. 19-1-5 NINTH GRADE --- Fun! Fun! Fun! Many new friends and faces took their places in the class. They were Janet Fife, Otto Klaameyer, Mary Beckmann, Bob Ding- field, Betty Heckerman, Gloria VVeber, Neil Dever, Bob Hunger, and Phyllis Zemek, who returned from a Catholic school she had been attending. First of all the boys remember participating this year for the first time with the school ball teams, while the girls can't for- get D.A.C. initiation. And Latin class! Cer- tainly they mustn't forget that class and the thrilling stories Mr. Holloway denies he told them. 1946 TENTH GRADE - This year brought Dorcas Lott, Don Bohr, and Nancy Sanimet. Everyone received his class sweater this year and was the envy of nearly all in school. 1947 ELEVENTH GRADE - The 49'ers took on the last of their crew this year. They were: Click Goetz, Shirley Pillsbury, Carl Har- fContinued on Page 540 enioh. pfzofalzecxi Dear Harry, I received your letter and I am sorry that you couldn't he here to see this, our first class reunion. Have you made an Eskimo girl Mrs. Howarth yet? Quite a bit has happened to our class since ,forty-nine. The building we used for the reunion was constructed by Clarence Goetx's t'Putty. Plas- ter, Paste, and Sometimes IVe Iwse IVood Build- ing Cof' By some strange coincidence Carl Harhert drives a Goetz cement mixer while Dick Eberling spreads cement for the same concern. The hall was beautifully adorned with flowers. They were unselfishly donated hy John and Lois Alsup,s 'tPretty Posy Pot Shoppef, An ample supply of corsages and boutonieres were supplied to oui' classmates by the Alsups also. The band engaged for the reunion was Nan- cy Sanimct,s. Bill Kubaeh and Paul Spencer are two of its best players. Vocalist was Roy Hiller, who sang a selection from Dorcas I.ott's great opera, 'tThe Tragedy of Pappy,s Liquor Stillf, Speaking of beverages, I noticed Gregory Burneson and John Kohler hovering about the punch bowl a good part of the evening. They are partners in the If Not Better, Then Xvorse. Beauty Salon. The punch, by the way, was made by Shirley Pillsbury, chemist for a brewing company. All evening Gloria Yveber was present with '4Blackinail, her favorite camera. The pic- tures that I am enclosing of the reunion were taken by Gloria. She works for Sam Spooner,s Juicy Scoops Newspaperf, Sam came to the reunion with Jean Schuster, his assistant editor. seventeen Solneplace, No man,s town, Any Month, Day, or Year in the future. The ever-punctual Neil Dever, now big time car mamifacturer, was on the way to the re- union with his secretary, Mary Beckmann, when his car blew a gasket. I.uckily for Neil that Bob Hunger and Glenn Simonds happened along, for mechanics is their profession. Bob owns his own station and Glenn is 'Thief Nut and Screw Fixerw at Flap.jack Airportf' Al Hennie arrived with models Betty Irsak on his right and Isabel Mosher on his left. The gowns they wore were designed by Barb Smith. Al is a professional basketball player now. Dave Uollins has -just broken the world's rec- ord for the 120-yard high hurdles. You remember Otto Klaameyer's big ani- hition, don't you? YVell, it has certainly nia- terialiled. Utto is right up on top with the hest of golf champs now. Roger Cooley and Jolm Michelich arrived with :i gorgeous suntan. They have quite a successful business in Florida. It seems they are operating a 'talake-Out-Your-IVill-In-Our- Favor old folks' home. Ruth Fischer does the paper-work part of the business, while Bill Dorow is the legal adviser. Bill is a very busy man. Dinner was arranged by Joyce Reed, our gracious hostess. She is attempting to teach home economics at Dover. Paul Yvise, minis- ter at Dover Congregational Church, gave the blessing. Al IVelker, physical education teach- er at Dover, gave the after-dinner speech on YYhat tve Have Becomef' During dinner Viola was called unexpected- ly. Her famous quintuplets were ill. Janet Fife, the children's governess, nent with Viola. Barbara Schuck had to leave early also. She is a star performer in the Ice Follies. fC'ontinued on Page 5-tj eniab. The outstanding class party was during the Christmas holidays. It was at the Rollerbowl. The junior dance was given March 18, with George Doolittle and his Orchestra. It proved to be a big success. As the Panorama went to press the juniors were making bigger and bettern plans for their outstanding social event, the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. twenty-two gophomofze Glass ' ' ' rniu-r, 1', N:-ff, N, Winn-rirh W. His uncanny shooting ability plus a terrific amount of speed made him a unanimous choice for the all-tourna- ment team at Orange. GREGORY BI'nNEsoN -- Greg,' played an important part in the success of our team this year. Used extensively as a backboard specialist, Greg scored in double figures a good percentage of the time. His fine work at Orange placed him also on the tourna- ment team. ' Bon GAVALEK-Not really hitting his stride 'til midseason, Bob proved to be our key man in the Orange tournament. Being high scorer both games and sharing the bulk of the offensive backboard control with Greg enabled Bob also to make the tourna- ment team. JOHN LIICHELICH - John, this year,s cap- tain, proved himself a fine leader, as our records show. He is a defensive wizard be- sides being a clever ball handler and play- maker. John invariably scored when the chips', were down. DICK CORNISH - Dick was our high scor- er this year leading the team with 187 points. Aside from being a fine shot from the side, he is an excellent dribbler, breaking up the opponents' defense numerous times. AL HENNIE - Al, the lefty of the twins, proved very valuable this year, using a left handed push-shot to be one of the teams top point-getters. ED HENNIE -- Ed displayed fine ability this year in both offense and defense. He reached his peak in the North Royalton game when he poured in 19 points. Bon HITNGER - Bob,', playing his last year of high school basketball as did the oth- er seniors, did a fine job as guard. SAM SPOONER - Sammy, although not seeing a great deal of action, showed that he could set shot with the best of them. PAUL VVISE - Paul, at 6 foot 1 inch, played good defensive ball in his last year. His height enabled him to snare many re- bounds. ALEX KALAPIS - Alex', didn't see a great amount of action but showed that he would be an important factor in the success of next year's ball club. Louis RADIl'E - Louie also is a next year,s hopeful as he is an adept shot and is quite fast. JOHN FOSTER - John,' possesses a great amount of spring in his legs which we know will be a great help next year. Louis DUCHEZ 1 Coach, Bruce Ward and Otto Klaamyer - Managers. Once again Coach presented Dover with a basketball team which will be well remembered. The two managers were very capable and both would have participated on the squad if not plagued with physical difficulties. Kukncka, R. Schilens. S. Hartman, This year our five cheerleaders led the student body through a very good football season. The cheerleaders and the students gave much co-operation and really showed the boys that they were being supported. Instead of choosing two cheerleaders this year the student body had to choose three. At the beginning of the school year, Margaret Kukucka was chosen to be cheerleader to replace Mary Ann Malinas, who had moved away. At the end of the basketball season, some of the freshmen and sophomore girls practised and tried out for cheerleading. Out of the four chosen to cheer at the North Olmsted game, Sally Davis, a freshman, and Jane Smith, a sopho- more, were chosen. Vve want to thank Jo-Ann VVissman and Shirley Hartman, our senior cheerleaders for leading us through this year. The fall term started September 8 as the students of Dover High filed into their classes to start off another year in the history of our school. In a week or so the clubs and activities were in full swing. The fellows were dili- gently practicing football with hopes of winning the championship this year. Soccer season commenced and the girls really kicked up some fast teams. Miss Yoyner spent her extra time after school drilling the band on our new foot- ball field. An assembly was given by the Nvagabond Trio,', who took us on an imaginary trip through Europe. At the North Royalton game the band made its first public appearance in uniform and they really looked sharp. Some eighteen 'junior and senior girls went to North Olmsted to par- ticipate in the soccer tournament. About this time the Panorania staff was chosen. Just before Halloweien, the senior high had its party. Some of the English classes went down town to see 'tHamlet.,' Un the night of November 5 we played and lost to Bay. This was the last football game of the season. It put us in second place in the YVest County League. The D.,-LC. sponsored the animal Football Banquet. The Meinory YYizard presented us with an as- sembly. Our rough-and-ready basketball team chalked up four victories be- fore school was dismissed for the Uhristmas holidays. The semester soon came to an end with the Panorama pictures being taken and the inmates of Dover struggling through exams, Our unfaithful .iuke box was finally given up and the Student Council set to work raising money to buy a new one. Sally Davis and Jane Smith fought through heavy competition to become the new cheerleaders. The hard fighting Demons were beaten out of the basketball championship by Bay, but went through four rounds in the State Tournament while Bay was knocked off in the first round. James Dutton, a Ill2l.l'llllbH. player, entertained us at an assembly. For one day, the future D.A.l'. members went through the tortures of initiation but fifty-one najffqr, H if in 1 'DM if was A l 'rz'-.-.213 'fi-4-'r came up smiling. The sophomores gave their first dance and really worked hard to make it a hit. Our track team participated in a number of track meets this spring. A concert was given by the band and glee club. The proceeds are to be used for buying new major- ette uniforms. A program sponsored by the P.T.A. had the band play a few pieces. Coach Ciresi produced an excellent baseball team this year. It looks as if we have a very good chance for the championship. Doverites celebrated the Easter season with four days of vacation. An assembly was given by Charles K. Ramsden, the one-man orchestra. Our music clubs participated in the County Band and Glee Club Festival. The seniors presented the play, Our Hearts VVere Young and Gay , Everyone present thoroughly en- joyed it.
