Our prime thought was to earn money to have the best Junior Prom. To earn money entailed much hard work, but we didn't mind. We got 011' to a good start by electing competent class officers. Our second step of preparation for the prom was holding the big Thanksgiving Dance. We increased our treasury by selling Christmas cards. Finally, in May the big night arrived. All our planning and hard work paid off as everyone had a good time at Youghiogheny Country Club. Not only did we accumulate money and plan a very fine prom, but we also kept pace with our school work and excelled in activities. Physics experi- ments and learning how to prove difficult Geometry theorems discouraged us-but we managed to make the honor roll at times and to uphold the scholastic standards of our class. Our juniors did a fine job on the football gridiron and basketball court. Six ot' us became reporters for the Campus Comments. The band and chorus would never have been successful with- out us in there pitching. Another exciting event of our .Iunior career was the Junior Class Play. We enjoyed displaying our acting abilities. We pride ourselves on all our accomplishments and look forward to a promising senior year. lst l l l UFl'I1'l'lllS f nu, ici-:vii ....., ,xilv-igor l 'li lil'lil4' .. ., 1-iwsifiem . . We dug up worms, wrote themes, and studied diligently. Our reward for all this hard work was to see a long list of sophomores on the honor roll each report period. As a group we had many pleasing experiences. Electing our class officers was a big moment for us. We participated in many extra curricular activ- ities such as sports and music. The deco1'ating ot' the gym for our very Iirst dance will always be cherished as a pleasant memo1'y. This sophomore year has been a happy one and full oi' adjustments. We, the seventh iiraders, look forward to greater and more prosperous years in the future. Although there were only sixty-two of us, we participated in many activities, such as the .Iunior Varsity Basketball Team, representation in Wil- merding's two fine bands, and taking an active part in the Junior Chorus. The path to graduation may seem far off nowg but if we, the seventh graders, keep up our good work and enthusiasm, we shall be ready to take our place as future leaders andd useful citizens. Vommencement, 1959, is just around the corner. 49 tudent Council The Steering Fommittee was the agent that gave the Student Vouncil its tirst spark ot' life. The Vommittee was com- posed of fifteen st11dents who became interested in organizing a Student t'ouncil. After taking a poll ot' the entire student body, the committee realized that the Oll- tire school was behi11d them. The commit- tee elected three of its members, Dorothy Wanetick, Thomas Evans and Fred Mc- Connell, as representatives to the State f'UllX'6Iltl0Il ot' Student C'ouncils. Later the steering Vommittee conducted the elections of home room representatives to the 1'on- stit11tion Committee. , , in W ' 4, Fig' Q i Wk, ar v M. 7 Z: L 'Z i T7 I , 4 Several Senior High School students got together and decided that o11r school should have a Student C'ouncil. This Steering Committee decided that the first step in forming a Student Vouncil wo11ld be to draw UID a t'onstitution. An election was held and there was one student from each home room elected to this c'UIlStltUtiUll C'ommittee. The committee, consisting ot' twenty-tive members from seventh to twelfth grade, was advised by Mr. Varver, and they met homeroom periods on Th11rs- days and Fridays. This committee worked hard and did a good job in drawing up Pl C'onstitution for o11r Student Founcil. lz:11r, ', . l'llll lJo11gl115. Dorothy . Education Every Monday evening sophomore, jun- ior, and senior boys of the Educational Measurements Bureau would meet in Room 300 to correct the intelligence, aptitude, and achievement tests admin- istered in our school, These boys worked hard to compute the raw scores, but the final grading process was left to Mr. Carver, our capable advisor. But all was not work, for after the academic and the business meeting the boys would hurry to the gym for a session of bas- ketball and other games. The boys played hard and even Mr. Farver would join in the fun. After all were tired, they would run down stairs for a warm soothing shower. When everyone was dressed, they would come up and find delicious ice cream and cake rolls wait- ing to top off a very enjoyable evening. Besides these regular affairs we always looked forward to the Christmas and spring parties that were always big treats that we all enjoyed. Rising aml S ocal usic It takes a lot of time and energy to make a group of people who like to sing into a well organized chorus. But it has been done and right in our own school, by Mr. Guest, our new music director. He has made the time you spend in singing well worthwhile. We have five organizations this year, more than ever before. The Glee Club sang at our Thanksgiving assembly this year and our girls small ensemble sang for the Presby- terian Community Service also. We couldn't do without them at Christmas and bacca- laureate services. We appreciate the chorus as much as those who are in it because we can sit back, relax, and enjoy it. The mem- bers look forward every year to the Pitts- burgh Forensic ancl Music League contests. Beautiful harmony is the result of long and diligent hours of practice and we thank the chorus for it. 1 The Band Ur. Krysik in un off munwnl Westinghouse Memorial High School can be proud of their fine band. Under the capable direction of Mr. Joseph Krysik, the band, consisting of sev- enty-two members put on enlightening half-time shows at our football games. The band made an impressive sight as they were led across the field by drum-major Rowland Evans and the eight snappy majorettes. The mem- bers spent much time and put forth much effort in preparing the drills for the games. Not only do we have a fine marching band, but also a fine concert band. During the long winter months the band prepares for their two big con- certs which are in February and May. Between these concerts the band also enters the Forensic Music Competition. Surrounding schools partici- pate in this annual event and for many years Wilmerding has come back with a superior rating. As we look back on our school years the band shall always remain as a high-lite of our memories. Brletic look things over Vocationals The vocational class of 54 consists of fourteen seniors who serve the school as movie operators, stage crew, and operat- ing the public address system. Besides run- ning the projector for all the movies, we set up the stage for all the plays, assem- blies or any other activities that may take place in the school. The public address sys- tem operators are on hand during the school year for all activities when they are needed. We are always ready to do what- ever we can to help keep our school in con- dition for the classes of the future. Besides doing our regular scheduled work for our shop grade, we have done special jobs for members of the faculty and our friends outside of the school. These jobs have given us much experience in the ma- chine shop industry. As we leave the industrial department of our school, we wish to thank our teachers and our advisors, Mr.. Dupar and Mr. Strager, for their help and advice in the past years. With their assistance, both in class and out of class, we have made our activities for the school successful ones. Library Assistants In the library you have probably noticed the many girls who work there. They give up two or three study halls a week to be of service to you. Their unseltishness shows the school spirit that they possess. More people like to go to the library because of their helpfulness, friendly smiles, and genial dispositions. Do you really know what the library as- sistants do to aid you ? They answer ques- tions, and help students become acquainted with the library. They help students with their library assignments by showing them the card catalogue and explaining its uses, pointing out the location of reference books, and obtaining reference informa- tion from the filing cabinet. Stamping in- coming and outgoing books and checking in new magazines are other duties. Check- ing for damaged books, pasting in new date-due slips, and other numerous tasks are also theirs. . Not only do they help you but help them- selves as well. They certainly render a valuable service to our school. The play was directed by Mr. Fails and our student director Marilyn Mitchell. The play renters about the Woodbridge family consisting: of Harlan Woodbridge and his two daughters, Babbie and Cyn- thia. 'l'hey've been minus a housekeeper for a time and are hoping to get a satis- factory one soon. Mr. Woodbridge is Very irritable and to top things, Elmer North- eote asks to marry Babbie. Harlan refused him and forbade him to see Babbie. Elmer then became inspired with a bold plan- to become the housekeeper, just to be near Babbie. When Elmer enters in female at- tire, Harlan mistakes him for Ma Simp- kins of Simpkinsville, the new house- keeper, and astonishes everyone by telling them that he's going to marry her. But then the real Ma Simpkins arrived. In the end, Ma Simpkins dons male attire and Elmer constantly keeps the audience laughing and howling at his impish tricks. X Q 9 1 X 5 . 9 Choral S eaking Interpretive 1'eading and speaking by a group is the main object of our C'horal Speaking Choir. This year our organiza- tion has been made up of two separate choirs: the girls' choir, composed of twen- ty-eight girls, and the boys' choir, com- posed of ten boys. High on the list of our memories is our first appearance before the public, the Thanksgiving assembly. Next came our part in the Fhristmas program, especially the popular version of The Night Before Christmas, done with the band. Other activities were the Forensic Speech Con- tests, in which some of our members par- ticipated. We shall always remember the fun and work concerned with 0u1' daily sessions. . All of us are very grateful to Mr. Carver, our patient director, who organized the group, improved our speech, and helped us to gain confidence and poise throughout our school years. 3 lst row: Joseph Curran, Arthur Pr41is:u'l1, VV. A winning season isn't always one of the goals of our coaches. Along with trying to teach good football to our boys, they try to teach them character, clean living, Zillli team work. If they can get this type of boy they feel that the big part of their job is a success. We all like to win, but the type of boy that is representing our school is much more important. These boys work hard everyday for a few hours to try to make themselves football players. But dur- ing this time they are taught to think, to give and to take, and most important of all good sportsmanship. We should be proud of our boys because they possessed all these qualities. We had another suc- cessful season in more ways than one. We should be grateful for both a winning team and a fine bunch of Americans represent- ing us and our school this season. .-I well flvsf H011 rm! Th iff Six Points .' I Six More I .' Going Snnwplavv? Leaving in the backfield is G. Richardson, 6' l , 220-pound right half- back, who ran, passed, and kicked. At left halfback we find J. Theodore, 5' 11 , 190 pounds, who led his team to many victories in four years. A boy who ran his heart out around the ends was H. Grant, 5' 10 , 165 pounds. At end there was K. Ficery, 6' 2 , 200 pounds, a big boy who was hot on jump passes. At left end was R. Peters, 6' 2 , 200 pounds, also a big boy and an ace on linebacking. Opponents seldom got around B. Tartaglio, 5' 8 , 165-pound end on defense. Left tackle was R. Johnston, 5' 11 , 190 pounds, who liked to block 23 quickly. Left guard was J. Cochran, 5' 10 , 200 pounds, who could rack-up a tackle on a crossblock. Right guard B. Hough, 6' O , 180 pounds, liked to pull out and topple an end. B. Mooney, 5' 11 , 185 pounds, was tough on any man on defense. These gridders added much glory to Wil- merding's sports program. S. football field, the rooters smelled the tantalizing odor of sizzling hot dogs and the aroma of steaming coffee. Pop, candy, and potato chips added their share in making hungry mouths water. Also there were the seniors, eager volunteers who were dancing with anticipation to dispense the goodies-all under the watchful eye of Mr. Fails, the senior class advisor. In spite of frozen toes, red noses and numb fingers, the mem- bers of the Refreshment Squad of 1953 enjoyed doing their part. Student Assistants As you entered our football stadium this last season, you saw a group of cold but smiling girls collecting tickets and hand- ing out line-ups at every gate. They are the student assistants and are one of the important groups in the school, helping Mr. Graham at all the games. Maybe you didn't realize that by working at these games they missed seeing many important plays. Our school should be proud of these girls for the fine work they have done the past year. lst ruu Jml ru The G. A. CI consists of tive seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore - all being' energetic, active in sports, and hard workers. The purpose of this council is to promote good sportsmanship and to get a better interest in sports. The sports we include in our schedule are volleyball, mushball, basketball, ping:-pong, and badminton. We all take turns acting: as officials for these various games. .GIPIS Athletic. Council To raise money for the seniors' sweaters we sell pep-pins, sweatshirts, candy at the basketball games and we hold a dance. The members this year chose Evelyn Cor- letti lPres.J, Mary Ann Sala tVice-Pres.j, Alice Augxenstein tSec.J, and Lelia Vej- voda lTreas.J, to lead them throuilh the year, with Bliss Ilannan as advisor. NVQ can't help but wonder what would have come about if our boys were in Section 16 or some other 'weak' section. But that is just wishful thinking. The boys did a very commendable job this year and should be proud because with a fair break here and there they might have had a better stand- ing in the league, although third place in Section 7 is very satisfactory. The record shows they had a fairly good defensive and offensive team. All this plus spirit, determination, and love ofthe game makes a good team, such as the Wildcats had this past vm-ar. Q. Q. The competition was tougher in Section 7 but our team still came through with a respectable record. There will be six seniors gone after this year, but Coach Scurci will have as a nucleus for next year's team, Paul Urban, Dick Evans, Nick Patella, and John Bar- nyk. The remainder of the team will be picked from a good group of fighting re- serves who also have compiled a fine rec- ord. This material should provide a good team which may go places, with a few breaks here and there along the line. T. l'vt4-rs J . Thcodorq- s LE ,nv 2-as , --a I, Q s JW a, l.
