These seven men, along with their solicitor, give freely of their time to keep us moving in the right direction. They have furnished us with the best educational opportunities available. Through their efforts, we are provided with up-to-date school supplies, an effi- cient teaching and administrative staff, a well-kept building, and a wonderful athletic program. To the School Board we wish to express our sincere and wholehearted thanks for everything they have done for our school. Slfilrlfl riff! to rigfhli: Mr. YV. N. Lamlwrt. Mr. C. Calm. 1112 E, J. Lm'k . AZ minidfra fion Our progressive minded supervising principal, Mr. N. I. Reist, has the re- sponsibility as the head of our school system to see that our schools run efficiently. Through his efforts we have reached the high scholastic standard that our school possesses today. Never will we forget his encouraging speeches at our important pep rallies. We know as long as his experienced and guiding hand is behind our school system we will achieve still greater successes in the future. As we linger a little longer than usual before going to our classes a harsh voice greets us with, Let's get out of the halls. It's our principal, Mr. Myers, doing one of his many duties. Sometimes he is stern, but when we tease him about his hand-writing or left-handedness we learn of his fine sense of humor. Through his leadership our schools will reach higher standards in future years. MRS. MAE BETZ Swm-fra ry ' MR. NORMAN I. RFIIST, Sup: in :sing PVIIIVIINII wil MR. RALPH S. Pete, our three year letterman, participated in all sport events. Irene also displayed her ability in a variety of sports. Bos! llrvsswl Our best dressed are three fashionable seniors. Mary Lou Botti makes obvious good taste, wearing trim, latest fashions. Two boys sharing this title are Paul Hose and Joe Ribar. lfusiesl Hustling here and there always indicates the presence of our two busiest seniors, Loretta Mendel and Bob Holden. Our two hard- working friends have added much to the senior achievements. Nia-est Pvrsomzlily Where there is a greeting with a friendly smile and a cheery Hi we can bet they will find Mary Patella and Bob Holden. Without a doubt they deserve the title. Shortest nml Tallvsl Above the crowds we see the two tallest seniors, talkative Gwen Tripplet, towering Donald Rayman. Hidden in the same crowd our shortest couple, petite Elsit Bilinski and humorous John Patalsky. Best Svrrvmry anal lies! Best Artist Not only day-dreaming of pret- ty pictures but actually turning them are our two seniors who have the best artistic ability, cute Gwen Gerbi and pleasing John Bacco. Best Looking ' Two seniors most pleasing to our eyes are glamourous Shirley Tauber and utterly good-looking Carlo Piatti. We hope others are just as pleased by their looks as we. Prettiest Hair A All the waves in the stormy sea can't compare with our two wavey haired seniors. This honor is shared by jolly Margaret Lynam and her co-champ, ex- tremely shy Louis Gentile. After all this waiting, it came too fast. After this excitement Wore off, it was soon time for football season. Weren't the games thrill- ing! Remember our game with Carmichaels? How could we forget! We held our first Sophomore dance on November 22. We had a wonderful time. Came the Senior Class Play. It was very good. This year we should feel big and mighty being on top of the Junior High classes, but we're still those shy and confused freshies of 53. As any other year we are newcomers from Wilmerding, North Versailles, Wall and Monroeville. The only words you hear for the first couple weeks are who, what and where? But in all we had a lot of fun getting acquainted with our new school. General science, algebra. and civics have entered into our class work this year. Our activities have really kept us interested and busy. About twenty-live of our boys are on either the junior basketball or foot- ball squad. All through the band you see faces of our freshies. The Junior Chorus has proven an interest to part of the class. We the class of 56 have really enjoyed this tremendous freshie year. We are looking forward to three more fun packed years in our senior high years. 5.1 Q-4,4 s i- . ph 9.-W 'G K wx -fn S-'Am' NQX ..,. 'G s AX' I P .4 rf xp 1-A R 1' ' v. N:1 1111 H11'k.- Due to the fact that the many surround- ing districts have new schools, our seventh grade is the smallest it has ever been. There are only 32 students enrolled in the class. Our dreams of being seniors seem a long way off. However, right now we are concentrating our efforts on the many activities around the school. Al- though there aren't as many activities open to seventh graders as there are to the senior high students, we are well rep- resented in activities designed for us. Some of the activities for the junior high students include the Junior Band undei the direction of M1'. Krysik, and the Junior Chorus under the direction of Mullaney. An outstanding activity for the boys is the junior high basketball team coached by Mr. Rossi. Since the activities for us are few, wc have made our own plans. Skating parties have helped make many evenings enjoy- able. Ordinary class parties at the school with eats and dancing helped all to have a good time. After our first year in junior high, we the class of 1958, are looking forward to our future high school days. 0z Cfafggegs , , , BOOKKEEPING - SHOP E17!7l'!lfIlII' Iisfwzs ll litflr rf'Ia1'atio11 This is hon' if isf Srriuus u'rn'l.' The Juniors learned quickly, and the staff was soon organized. Bob Holden was elected editor. New pages were added, with the favorite being the Variety Views page. Among the things unforgettable: Eddie Hochlinski's verbal battles with the Jun- iors. Mr. Beauseigneur's famous state- ment: You're using too much paper, and what are you doing with the stensils. selling them ? - 0 um! Wudic CHORUS -- HI-LITESH We of the Senior Chorus, under the cap- able direction of Miss Mullaney, were told when we stepped into the music room in September to prepare for a trying and busy year. We have sung in the Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and Graduation Exercises. We participated in the Foren- sic Contest this year. This meant that February was a month of concentrated rehearsals because not only did we have the contest but also a Winter Concert occurred within one week of the contest. We of the chorus planned some activities for the year which have kept the members interested through the long rehearsals. We are trying to establish our chorus as an organization with responsibilities and activities. Our officers have worked hard to make our social affairs a success and all of us have endeavored to have concerts of the highest caliber. We are proud of our girls' ensemble. It is a group in its infancy but is gradually maturing into an ensemble that will be outstanding. In the future we hope to see a male chorus of fifty members, and many other things. We hope that the Senior Chorus will up- hold the music standards of W.M.H S. in the future years. Here at the Wilmerding High School we have that band that so many people admire and enjoy. This year we had a total membership of seventy-two march- ing bandsmen who entertained the specta- tors during half time at every one of our school football games. Our band is not only a marching band but also a concert band as well. Our con- cert band consists of eighty-one members who Work very hard under the direction of Mr. Joseph Krysik, preparing for their annual winter and spring concerts. These concerts are usually given in February and May and consist of various concert members of different categories. Preparation is not only required for the annual concerts but also for the Pennsyl- vania Forensic Music League Contest which our band enters every year. In these contests the bands entering are given a required number and a number of their own choice to play. They are judged on their ability and interpretation in playing these numbers. The first con- test was held at McKeesport High School, Pennsylvania, and the second and third were held at California and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Individual members of the band also enter these contests as soloists or members of ensembles. This year our band had a very large representation as soloists and members of the different ensembles. As the school year closes we find that our band, like so many others loses some of its members. But there shall be younger, up-coming members from our Junior Band to fill the spots of the graduating mem- bers. And due to the great interest in music at the Wilmerding High School there will be many more concerts to be given by our band and many more con- tests in which our band will represent our musical-minded community and High School. Our library assistants are students from grades seven to twelve who have voluntarily relinquished their study periods for the year to be of assist- ance to us. Their unselfishness is an excel- lent example of school spirit. By their genial dispositions, cheery smiles, and general attitude of helpfulness, they make the library a place where all students like to go. We are aided in securing any infor- mation concerning new books, magazines, pamphlets, or reference material. Cer- tainly any student who has ever obtained a book of any type owes the library assist- ants a vote of thanks. They help with the usual library routine duties, such as charging books, sending overdue notices, putting books on shelves, making bulletin board displays, and mending books. They also perform some of the mechanical processes which are necessary before a book is placed on the shelf such as lacquering the cover. lettering the back, pasting in pockets and date-due slips, and placing the library stamp in the book. Without a doubt the library assistants are a valuable asset to the school. Lrft tu rifflii: P. We are on hand for all plays, dances, or any other activities that may take place in the school during the school year. There are the public address system operators who are on hand for anything that may take place during the school year. We are always ready to do whatever we can to help keep our school in condi- tion for the classes of the future. We, fthe outgoing members of the voca- tional class of 53 seniorsl, wish to thank our advisors, Mr. Dupar and Mr. Strager, for making our school years so wonderful, and for the assistance they gave us in helping the classes and organizations of the school to make their doings through- out the years successful ones. SPEECH PERFECTION This year the choral speaking choir has been an important asset to both our school and student body. Under the capable di- rection of Mr. W. Lester Carver it has proved to be enjoyable as well as educa- tional to its members. The choir played a major part in the Christmas Program with a unique ar- rangement of The Night Before Christ- mas accompanied by the band. The group is divided into a girls' and boys' section. Each rehearsing on different days and occasionally combining their talent for assemblies and public appear- ances. One of the chief purposes of the choir is to correct and study the common errors in everyday speaking. Another purpose is to acquaint the students with poetical and prose writings. Representing our group at the Forensic and Music League this year were Janet Hillier and David Richards of which we are proud. lx! run' fl: ll In rifllzll 'X i'm'Iii':i11. 31. Iizirlwn N 45- VIII. Their first game, a non-league exhibition with Lechburg ended up with Wilmerding on the short end of the score. The following Friday the Cats played host to Brookfield, Ohio. Brookfield was big and fast and our boys weren't given much of a chance. But after the last of the fans filed through the exits, the cheers of victory came from the Wilmerding side of the clubhouse. Our Cats again showed their superiority when they easily beat East Pittsburgh. Rankin also fell victim to the Wildcats. Glassport was next, and everyone felt this would be the big test. We passed this test with flying colors as Glassport had little chance. Pitcairn offered stiff resistance in the first half but the Cats came through and clawed their way to victory. Elders Ridge also offered resistance, but after the first quarter they never knew what happened. Our boys' easy victory at East McKeesport gave them the Valley title for the third straight year. Our last foe for the regularly scheduled season was Eliz- abeth. This game was a thriller and after it was all over we had entered the WPIAL class B playoffs. This game was full of action and excitement up to the very last second. Our boys lost this one by a close score, but when it was all over the Mikes said that our Wildcats were the best they ever played all year. Wherc's the ball ? After completing our season this year we look in the future to next year's team and to the boys who will make up the nucleus of next year's squad. Ron Peters and Ken Ficery, the two big boys of the squad, are slated to be the two main cogs in the coming year. Jim Theodore, the only other regular returning. will tend to add strength. Mr. Scurci will pick the remainder of the team from a good group of reserves that will be coming up. The graduating seniors will be watching with interest next year's team, and cheering them on from the bleachers. asa: , ggggix 4 9, it t L X iisi 5 fx gh ., uk. -,, I jf Ii -ah il il v ,.f4 sf- ,, X HU, ff ,gf U1 ,, ,., ff ii in Q .
