Dedication Tekoa 1988 The class of 1988 dedicates this yearbook to all of the people who share a commitment to excellence in education and who have been instrumental in the progress of Westfield State College. Westfield State College was founded one hundred and fifty years ago as the nation ' s first public coeducational institution for teacher preparation. Horace Mann, secretary of the Board of Education, was instrumental in getting the state to appropriate funds to establish the State Normal School, opened in Barre, Massachusetts. In 1844, the college moved from Barre to Westfield and Reverend Emerson Davis became the first headmaster at the new site. The college moved again in 1892 to the building which is now Westfield ' s city hall. In 1932, the State Normal School became the Westfield State Teachers College as the result of a bill signed by Governor Joseph Ely. The College made its final move in 19 56 to the present site on Western Avenue. All Massachusetts State Teachers colleges were changed to State Colleges in 1960. This change led to the expansion of the curriculum giving students the opportunity to concentrate in areas other than teaching. There have been many changes and developments at the College since its establishment in 1838. Starting with twenty students, the college now has an enrollment of three thousand. Its dedicated faculty members and administrators continue to contribute to the progress of public higher education at Westfield State College v J f the Turf student teaching
