Westfield State College was founded one hundred and fifty years ago as the nation ' s first public coeducational institution for teacher preparation. Horace Mann, secretary of the Board of Education, was instrumental in getting the state to appropriate funds to establish the State Normal School, opened in Barre, Massachusetts. In 1844, the college moved from Barre to Westfield and Reverend Emerson Davis became the first headmaster at the new site. The college moved again in 1892 to the building which is now Westfield ' s city hall. In 1932, the State Normal School became the Westfield State Teachers College as the result of a bill signed by Governor Joseph Ely. The College made its final move in 19 56 to the present site on Western Avenue. All Massachusetts State Teachers colleges were changed to State Colleges in 1960. This change led to the expansion of the curriculum giving students the opportunity to concentrate in areas other than teaching. There have been many changes and developments at the College since its establishment in 1838. Starting with twenty students, the college now has an enrollment of three thousand. Its dedicated faculty members and administrators continue to contribute to the progress of public higher education at Westfield State College v J f the Turf student teaching Date Books Get togethers Many Thanks to Bob Mailloux John Morytko financial aid office Dickinson Hall 20 Mickey Curtis Bob Culkeen Jim Lombard registrar ' s office water problems What a year it has been! My first year as president, and my first graduating class. I am glad we are both making it. . .together. Naturally, I am biased but I just felt you were a special group. You had a wonderful sense of yourselves as individuals, and as a class you are a conttiunity of friends. I know that when Devy and I went to the Valentine ' s dinner dance at Chez Josef with a number of you, we felt we were part of a family affair. Your president Katie Thompsen has been tireless in your behalf. She and others have made us look and feel good about ourselves and each other . I don ' t want you to leave. Don ' t forget us. It proved to be just that as the Fighting Owls posted their best record ever of 6-3. Making it a season to remember were All- Conference senior stalwarts such as Ail- American tight end Jeff Stackpole, and a pair of talented do everything athletes in Bob Erhardt and Carlos Canino. Other senior standouts who finished their careers with school records were quarter- back defensive back Eric Ryder and half- back Joe Champigney. Westfield ' s quality seniors were supported by many talented underclassmen. An opportunistic defense that held most op- ponents in check made the Owls strong con- tenders for the New England Conference title with a 5-1 record after six games. West- field ' s only loss in the first six weeks of the sea- son was a closely contested 17-7 decision to New England power Plymouth State. The Owls finished their finest season on an upnote with a dominating victory over Fitch- burg. Athlete of the Week 1st football game 42 ITeam members: Carlos Canino. The Lady Owls finished a close third in the conference, losing only to Salem and Bridgewater by 1-0 scores. Coach Lussier is already looking ahead to next sea- son, when Westfield returns all but four girls. Seniors on this year ' s squad were All-Conference pick Pam Clark, who led the team with six goals, goalie Mara Lichoulas, and twin sisters Lisa and Lynn Krawczyk, who were the team co-captains. The Owls lost in the opening round of the playoffs to ECAC champ Williams, but Westfield ' s veteran coach Jim Fonte was already looking forward to another banner season in 1988 as all but one player returns. The lone graduate, however, will be difficult to replace. Senior Joe Conry capped his stellar career at Westfield by play- ing in the New England All-Star Game for the second consecutive year. The All-Conference standout was the Owls ' leading scorer with five goals and 11 assists. Conry was surrounded by an enthusiastic and talented group of underclassmen, including All-Conference picks Mark Gonsalves and Daryl Zanardi. Westfield started out season slowly, going 1-3-1 before re- cording a 4-0-2 mark over the next six games. The Lady Owls banked five straight opponents during one stretch, capped by a 1-0 victory over confer- ence champion North Adams State. Spearheading the defense was senior Trish Crowley, an All-Conference First Team defender, and junior defender Lori Harpin, an All-Conference honor- able mention selection. Junior Aimee Ross, who scored nine of the team ' s 20 goals, was Westfield ' s other All Con- ference First Team member. Also playing well throughout the season were Deb Trainor and freshman goalie Deb Bousquet, who allowed only 7 goals in 12 games. The Lady Owl booters lost only one player to graduation, their MVP Crowley, so they were looking forward to a win- ning season in 1988 with another tight defense and a bit more offensive spark. i S?T . .V ' ' Sg!S? ? ?r 2SJJ: L iTW L Β« bk B jsnfi Freshman Junior picnic Masquerade 59 studying Octoberfest Families Bermuda Family Weekend 62 Music Awards African Apartheid .-J ANNUAL STUDENT FACULTY t β r 1 2? Thanks to a few dedicated individuals this book became a reality. Cheryl . . . Thank you very much for EVERYTHING. I know you had a lotto do and did not enjoy all of those long hours in the computer room. This yearbook would be speechless without you. I also thank you for your undying support throughout the summer. Without you this book would still not be done! Paul ... I really appreciate all of the time and effort you put into this book. I know that your time was hard to come by. TEKOA would be lost without you. Renee ... I thank you from the bottom of my heart for always being there for me. The pictures are gorgeous! You were always ready to help me in any way that you possibly could. You really cared about the progress (or lack of] of the book. Kirsten . . . Thank you for all of the beautiful artwork. You always managed to turn out the greatest things in the shortest of time. I also thank you for putting up with me when the going got rough. You were always there with a friendly word when I was about to give up. I will miss you next semester, but I am looking forward to your return in the spring. Mickey . . . Thank you for everything. I really appreciate all of the time you put into writing the sports copy. I don ' t know what I would have done without you! John . . . What can I say? You were always there for me, even during your vacation we kept in touch with the progress of things. I always knew that I could count on you. I know that I was often hard to get in touch with but ' sooner or later we always seemed to touch base. Bob . . . Thank you for everything. You were very patient with my numerous questions and problems. I really appreciate your never ending dedication to TEKOA. Dave . . . Thank you for all of the spectacular layouts you were able to create. I also thank you for your never ending support. I hope that next year TEKOA becomes your life just like it was this year. Lisa . . . Thank you for your support and typing skills. You are the best friend a person could ask for. Without you to keep my head on straight, I don ' t know if anything would have ever gotten done! I owe a great big thank you to my family. They put up with TEKOA things all over the house. For most of the- summer they were without a dining room table and often without a living room floor. I owe a very special thanks. to my sister Barbara. She was usually very willing to help me in any way she possibly could. To the rest of the staff . . . Many thanks for a job well done. I appreciate all of the Wednesday evenings that you. gave up to work on the yearbook. I wish the seniors (Liz, Cheryl, Renee, Gina and Marge] the best of luck for the ; future. Linda Backner Editor TEKOA 1988 Linda Backner Editor Cheryl Nelson Copy Editor Kirsten Karplus Graphics Editor Renee Gawlinski Photography Editor yearbook meetings variety show 240 Marie Nadeau Photographer Dave Hathaway Staff Member Joanne Donovan Staff Member Gina Innamorati Staff Member Elizabeth Kliger Primary Signature Editor Well, I can ' t say that I didn ' t know what I was getting myself into this year when I consented to be the editor, again. But I was determined not to do it alone. I needed a good staff behind me to help. As you can see, the staff was the best one a person could ask for. Linda Backner, my co-editor, was more than just a co-editor, she was a friend. I asked Linda to help because she was organized, motivated, creative, and sup- portive. She was always there in a crisis (and there were plenty of them] with a help- ful solution. She gave 100% to this book and it shows. Cheryl Nelson, copy editor, and her fingers were imperative to this book. She wrote, edited, compiled, organized and typed all the copy in this book. Without her, we would have a lot of space in the book. Even with all of her own work, she managed to get it all done. I don ' t know how. Renee Gawlinski, photo editor, was such an asset to this book. If it wasn ' t for her, there would be 248 blank pages. Without her talent, her time, and her staff, the book wouldn ' t have been complete. She brought her pictures, and ideas to every meeting and tried to help in any aspect of the book that needed it. She was at all the events snapping photos left and right of anything that moved, and even some things that didn ' t move. Paul Campbell, business editor, was such a help when it came to raising money. He organized the advertising campaign and followed through with it. He was head of security and he still managed to give some of his time to the yearbook. That is dedication. Kirsten Karplus, art editor, is an incredibly talented person. She has a creative mind and her artwork is beautiful, as you can see. She joined the staff late in the year but definitely shined. She was always there in a crisis. I don ' t know what we would have done without her. Two other people, the advisors, should be given thanks. John Morytko and Bob Mailloux put up with all of our questions and problems and solved any major crises that we encountered. As you can see, I surrounded myself with talented people who I knew would help out and be as dedicated as 1. 1 think I chose well. I want to thank all of you.
