We ' d like to especially thank Jeanne M. Julian for her unselfish dedication during the past four years by dedicating this volume of Tekoa to her. Although Jeanne has many responsibilities as Staff Associate of Institu- tional Advancement, she is always willing to take the time to offer her assistance whenever and wherever possible. She contributes much to the college community through her many talents and heart-felt enthusiasm. A sincere thank-you, Jeanne, for being such a truly caring and giving person. You set the standard. You kept us proud. This College is deeply grateful, and we know that those qualities of endurance and balance will support your memory of our times together in the past; and your success and achievement in the future. A bagpipe procession across the campus began the event with music by the chorale and wind symphony throughout the ceremony. James G. Collins spoke at the event. James Collins served as State Chancellor of Higher Education between July and September of this year. He was a member of the Ways and Means Committee, and chaired the Education Committee and special legislative commissions on unequal educational oppor- tunity, nuclear safety, and the performing and visual arts. He is involved in a lot of community activities and is a board member of the New England Board of Higher Education, the Boston Museum of Science Corpora- tion, and the Boston Ballet Company. He is also a member of the National Board of Jobs for America ' s Graduates. The seniors were quite excited to be initiated into their senior year. You could tell just by looking at them that they were also upset to be leaving Westfield and the friends that they had made here. As they marched onto the stage in Dever, there was a look of accomplishment in their eyes. They were proud to be seniors of Westfield State College. 69 W T ;  N 73 74 76 78 ik£ 80 A- B. fl B 1 HI pr l v . The team compiled on overall record of 1 4-4- 1 and a MASCAC record of 5- 1 - 1 . The members of the squad had a positive attitude towards the season and this turned out to be one of the key factors of their success. The team was led by seniors Doug Vigliotta and Jon King, and junior Joe Conry, all of which were captains. Sophomore Mark Gonsalves ( 1 7 goals, 4 assists), Conry (7 goals, 8 assists), and Vigliotta (8 goals, 5 assists) led the Westfield scoring attack while fullbacks Bob Fleming, Rudy Veldwijk, Pat Sullivan, John Riordan and goalie Chris Ochtera (.83 GA, 4.75 SHO) held down the defense. This season was highlighted by many key games including a 2-1 vic- tory over Kean College of New Jersey, a 3-1 win over a strong East Connecticut State, and a 3- 1 triumph over Roger Williams. The biggest win of the year was a 2-0 decision over Salem State. At the time, Salem was ranked in the top ten in the nation and had not lost a conference game in three years. This was considered by many the up set of the year in college soccer. Westfield was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the eight New En- gland teams to move on to post-season play. In their first game of the ECAC ' s, however, they were beaten 2-1 by Connecticut College in the final minute of play. Coach Jim Fonte was pleased with the season and is preparing his squad for another fine season. Gawlinski and Duerr led a strong starting team of Laurel Ainsley, Lis Weinberg, Stephanie Howard, Coreen Gortze, and Patty Morano. Most of the team had no experience with varsity volleyball, but they did conl siderably well. They worked hard under fourth year Coach Steve Jarvis. Coach: Steve Jarvis This year, as in the past, the Men ' s Volleyball Team played well but did not have the record to prove it. They ended the season with a 5-14 mark. Led by senior co-captains Brent Dawson and Jack Hyland, the season did have several highlights. The most impressive of these came against the Merchant Marines down in Connecticut. Led by strong net play, and the superstar setting of Steve Hands Boudrot, the team rolled to a 1 5-4, 1 5-2 victory. This left an encourag- ing mark for the future of the team. This year ' s team consisted of a number of seniors including: Matt Bo- land, Pat McAndrews, Andy Nelson, Mike Bertrand, and Michael Keop. Aside from the loss of these key players, the only sore spot is that head coach Steve Jarvis is leaving Westfield for a more lucrative coaching career. 126 IB r.. V ft ' m m 4. The women swimming in the meet scored points in nine of the 17 events they en- tered. They finished 20th out of 26 teams. The team will lose one senior, team captain, Debbie Sambrook. Debbie was also team captain her junior year. She was the record holder in the 5, 100, and 200 yard Breastroke, and a member of the 200 and 400 year Medley Relays. The team hasn ' t had a winning season since 1 982-83, when they posted a 13-12-1 record. This season the team was under the direction of first year coach Gerry Healy. The team ended the season with a record of 2- 1 4. The obstacles that the team faced this season were many. Five of the first and second line players were out with injuries. All five were key players. The stress this year was on academics before hockey. Westfield was of national interest because of this. These kids aren ' t going to go on to play in the pro ' s, Coach Healy said, they ' re here to get an education so they can get a job when they graduate. Senior captain Don Lincoln was con- vinced that in the long run this academic discipline will more than pay off. Lincoln and junior captain John Krim head up defensive unit this season. Lincoln was 5th on team in scoring this year. He was also named to the 1986-87 MASCAC All-Conference Team. With defense as the high priority of team, Sr. Tim Naze and Sr. Captain Jim Healy will provide leadership in the net. The team ' s leading offensive charge was junior Don Palmer. Invitational Meet and was ranked Top 1 in Division III. The team had five people qualify for the ECAC meet, two people qualify for the N.E. Divi- sion II, and one member of the team, All American Kathy Morton, qualify for the 1987 Nationals. Senior Kathy Norton played a very important role in the success of the team. The four year veteran qualified for the ECAC ' s and the N.E. Division III Championships in her first week. She went on to qualify for the Nationals in the 3000 and 5000 meter. She also placed as one of the top four in the 3000 at the N.E. Division III. She became All American at Chicago, placing 8th in the 5000. Junior Renee Gawlinski, a 3 year veteran on the team, also qualified for the ECAC and New England Division III Championships. She went on to place 7th in the ECAC ' s, and placed in the top 50% at the New England Conference. Women ' s Cross Country The Women ' s Cross Country Team, coached by Carolyn Dewy, had a good season. The team placed 3rd in the Amherst Invitational, and 2nd in the MASCAC Championship. They also placed 7th in the ECAC Championship, and 5th in the NCAA Regional Qualifying. The team will suffer the loss of five seniors, all of whom shared a close friendship throughout their cross country careers. They are Ann Dever, Julie Hynes, Lynda Hull, Kathy Norton, and Debra O ' Connell. Senior Kathy Norton had an outstanding season, placing second in the Conference. North will be sorely missed, but the remaining under-classmen should have a successful season next year. Women ' s Outdoor Track The Women ' s Outdoor Track Team, coached by W.F. Newhall, finished the season with a 12-2 record. The main highlights of the season were the team ' s first place finishes in various meets. Westfield placed first at their own WSC Invitational Meet, and in the meets against Amherst, Williams, Lowell, and Bentley. All of this season ' s team members worked hard toward their goals. Lisa Belvery, Linda McDonald, and Gina Ray were all participants at the ECAC Championship. MacDonald and junior Renee Gawlinski had an outstanding season, becoming All-New England. Gawlinski also placed 7th at the ECAC ' s in the Hammer Event. Senior Kathy Norton is an athlete who will be truly missed by Westfield. In her 4th season on the Outdoor Track Team she was MVP, became All-New England, and went on to qualify in the NCAA Championship in the 5000 meter. Norton also became All American in the 3000 meter. Kathy Norton will be missed, but the remainder of the team has plans to continue their success. 140 141 Men ' s Indoor Track The Men ' s Indoor Track Team has a history of winning. This season the team sought to continue their success with Coach Jerry Gravel, and senior co-captains John Otrando and Mike Keegan. The senior squad included Mike Hanley (distance), Rich Ward (sprints), Keith Rice (sprints), and Paul Fratini (distance). Ultimately, the team finished the season with a 12-2 record, placing 7th at the New England Division 111 Championships. There was an excellent showing at the meet at the University of Connecticut with junior Andrew Fronczak on the shotput, senior John Otrando on the weight throw, junior Paul Murphy on the 400 meter dash, and junior Ken Parece on the x h mile. The team also participated in their 1st Mass. State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Westfield had many team champions this season, with three national qualifiers, five for the Mew England Championships, and fourteen for the N.E. Division 111 Championships. This year ' s outstanding athletes are Lenny Alson, Peter Mole, Curtis Aston, and Miles Wood- house, all of whom are Ail-Americans. Men ' s Cross Country At the start of the season, the Massachusetts State College Cross-Country Champions sought to defend their title under the direction of new coach, W.F. Newhall. The team also sought to challenge their 6 ranking in the Mew England Division III. Westfield started the season with a first place win over four other schools at the Amherst College Invitational. The team also placed first in the Codfish Bowl over Salem State. Sophomore Mark Smith broke the course record with a time of 23:10 at the Dan Doyle Invitational. The team also won first place at the Mass. State Athletic Conference Champions. Despite the loss of seniors Mike Keegan, Mike Hanley, and Paul Fratini, next fall ' s team should do as well, if not better. Men ' s Outdoor Track The Men ' s Outdoor Track Team had an outstanding season coached by Jerry Gravel. They had a 16-2 record, became MASCAC Champions, and won their own W.S.C. Invita- tional Meet. Other accomplishments of the team were placing 7th at the Eastern Champi- onships and 5th at the Mew England Division 111 Championships. All the athletes worked hard to make those accomplishments. Those that did outstanding jobs this year are Roy Bain, Peter Mole, Miles Woodhouse, Rodney Smith, Dave Otrobinski, Jim Forest, and Greg Callahan. Junior Andrew Fronczak will be back for another season after his outstanding achievements this year. Fronczak was All-Mew England All-Conference, and placed 7th at the NCAA Division III in Chicago. Despite the loss of some strong seniors, Coach Gravel will return with a promising team for next season. 142 « ' • ' ) i H w t y s r I ■m ■v 143 o j • 145 -K % j mm 147 _J 148 149 fi eAert PLAYBILL ■■■I k M vQk _■•■' ■. A r i 1 Li r Upon our arrival at Westfield State College in our freshman year, it was said that college would be the best times of our lives, and that the friendships we established throughout the next four years would bring everlasting memories. All of us can think back to the happy times as well as the sad times and, most of all, those seemingly unending days of frus- tration. Memories ... of dropping out of school at least five times a semester, of crying over heartbroken relationships, of flunking those tests we studied so hard for (and the ones we didn ' t study so hard for), of the great depression of not being able to get into Kelleher ' s, and so on . . . Thinking back to all those times, we realize that our friends were the ones to pull us through over and over again. The class of 1 987 has grown from 700 individuals to a group bound by unity with one another. The class as a whole had to experience a lot of changes on the campus of Westfield State College during our senior year, but through all those times of anxiety and frustration we pulled together and pulled through. The Class of 1987 ... a class of friendships, unity and change . . . here ' s to you Seniors! The class Westfield State College will never forget. When 1 was a freshman entering Westfield State, I wanted to get involved with the yearbook because I thought it would be fun. I was the only freshman on the staff, but I said to myself that by my senior year I wanted to be editor of my yearbook. Well here it is my junior year, and I am the editor. At first the job overwhelmed me, however I am glad that I took the position. The things that I have learned since that day will help me in the years to come. It has helped me to organize my time and my thoughts and how to handle people. It has also placed me in many new situations where 1 have had to take command. I am grateful that I was given this opportunity. There are a lot of people that helped me when I thought I couldn ' t go on and without who this book could not have been finished. 1 would like to thank Bob Mailloux and John Morytko who were very important in leading to the completion of this book. I turned to them whenever I had a problem and they were there for me. I could always count on them and I thank them for that. John Morytko, Bill McMullen, Renee Gawlinski, and John Moreau who, along with their staff, took the most beautiful pictures whenever I asked. And I asked a lot. Then there was my staff: My roommate — Cheryl Nelson, what can I say? You were there for me whenever 1 needed something done or a helping hand. Your dedication to me and the yearbook was terrific and really kept up my momentum. If you weren ' t there assisting me with the yearbook, and the other stressful things in my life, I probably would have had a breakdown during this last semester. Even when you had exams, papers, and other work to do, you helped me. You even came over during the summer when all the last minute things had to be done. I just wanted you to know that I thank you and appreciate it immensely. You are the best. Of course, you ' re my roommate. Linda Backner, you were one of the pillars of strength of this book. You helped in any way that you could to take some of the pressure off of me and even though I was still always stressed, it helped a lot to know that you were there. You also came to the rescue during the summer when I had deadlines to meet and layouts to finish. You came over and worked with me to get them out on time, and I thank you. I need to thank Paul Campbell who did much more than anyone ever asked. Without having to ask him to do things, they were already done. I want to thank him for keeping me going during the rough times when 1 didn ' t feel like working anymore. Thank you Paul. Scott Amaral. 1 can ' t believe how much time you put into this book second semester. You obviously wanted this book to be the best and it shows. Even while you had many things to do as a senior getting ready to graduate, you still had the time to help me out. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The rest of the staff, Gina Innamorati, Marge Slater, Dave Hathaway, Wendy Casey, Cathy Cryan, was wonderful. They were always there with new ideas and fresh thoughts. They did things on their own time as well as the allotted time at the meetings. Without them, a lot of things wouldn ' t have been done and 1 know 1 couldn ' t have done it without them. If there is one thing I can say about my staff, it is that they were dedicated to making this book one of the best books ever. 1 hope you, the class of 1 987, appreciate this book and will look back on it, and your years at Westfield, as an experience that was captured by the pictures and faces you see in this book, TEKOA 1987.
