To the Class of 1984: There is a very significant passage in Kahlil Gibran ' s The Prophet. Always you have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune. But I say to you that when you work you fulfill a part of earth ' s furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born, And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life. And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life ' s innermost secret. As you leave Westfield State College to embark on a wide variety of careers and advanced study, remember Gibran ' s message. Continue to work and study as you have during your undergraduate years so that in loving life you will con- tinue to demand of yourselves in order to achieve success. I am confident you will approach your careers with the same spirit of enthusiasm you have exhibited as a member of the College Community. As a whole we have benefitted from your presence.
