Your College days will have been completed. But just as this book will always serve to renew your memories of the time you spent and studied and learned at Westfield State College, your unique spirit will always remain with your Alma Mater as a goal for classes to come. You called yourselves awesome! How appropriate! As a class you were that, and more! You exhibited a genuine love for the College, a concern for others, a dedication to work, a sense of humor. You always had my respect and my gratitude. Now you face new challenges, new opportunities for con- cern, for diligence, for dedication, for humor. During your College years you have sown for yourselves a mantle of accomplishment. It is still yours. Wear it well. You are still a part of the College Community. Early in your years. 1 read you a remarkable poem by Rabindramoth Tagore. In bidding you this final good wish, may I help you recall it to your memories. I slept and dreamt That life was joy. I awoke and saw That life was duty. I acted and behold Duty was joy! Dear friends in the Class of 1983, I wish you peace, love, and joy! Respectfully, JLuJ - Francis J. Through phone calls and letters, we gradually learned these strangers ' names and during the interview — tour, we even saw their faces. Oh, that ' s Dean Nevins, and you ' re Dean Hagan, How do you do Dean McKenna. Is the Registrar in? What are his office hours? I ' m having trouble with registration. There ' s this item on my bill I don ' t understand. Can you help me? As the days flew by, we began to know these administrators and professors very well. No matter what the problem, there was someone somewhere who could help solve it. (If we could only find them.) Teachers would gladly help with classwork difficulties, advisors would advise, administrators would explain questions like: When ' s graduation? What do we fill out for the diploma? Which side does the tassle go on? Then suddenly it ' s the end and still the questions, the problems, and the difficulties. We finally conclude that as much as we like to think we got through it all on our own, we always had help from administration and faculty who answered our stupidest questions. For four years of patient assistance and dedicated service, a thank- you does not quite cover it. But it was you, the administration and faculty who shaped and developed each and every one of us into the fine young adults that enter this society today. 32 « «;VS£ ■• I S V :; s SI I i  .feJ T Illliiiiiiiiir iiiin IDIEIHIINID THE SCENES iNYTHIN6 GOES ' 9 m WSC Dinner Theatre opened on April 13-15. Scanlon Cafeteria was transformed from an eating and meet- ing place into the USS American as WSC Dinner Theatre launched its first production, Anything Goes. Working against time and the obstacles both ex- pected and unexpected in turning the cafeteria into a theatre. The cast and crew produced an impressive and en- joyable show. On the final evening, the audience dined on a special turkey din- ner before enjoying the singing and 1 dancing. Director Kathryn L. McColley, Musical Director Elaine M. Michaud and choreographer Karin J. Perry skillfully guided their talented cast through pos- sibly treacherous waters. The leads and chorus rode on a high wave of energy and won the admiration of appreciative audiences with the help of the pit or- chestra and tech crews. WSC can cer- tainly look forward to many more tal- ented productions from this alternative to MTG. IPIIPIPIN MTG finished off the fall semester with a bang when they presented Pippin on December 1- 4 in Dever Auditorium. Experienced director George MacGillvray assisted by musical director Julie MacNall and choreographer Maxine Sadowsky, spread a little sunshine in the audi- ence ' s lives. Although the story was set in the Holy Roman Empire in 780 A.D., the ideas presented were every bit as important for people living today. Enjoying the simple things in life and just being yourself proved to be more enjoyable and much easier to do than being what others want you to be. The interest- ing characters and unusual songs led everyone into the Christmas break with a smile and a cheer for the tal- ented cast and crew. mm WsSs ■' ■i WES1SIDE STOCy Every year, the rumor goes around that MTG will be producing West Side Story, but it always proves false. Some people murmur that the dancing is too difficult, the songs too complicat- ed, the acting too intense. But during the spring semester, director Russell Shapiro, musical director Stuart Rog- ers, and choreographer Kathleen Brackett decided to give the play a try. The result suprised everyone. Even the most skeptical critics enjoyed the dances, the songs, and the drama. Al- though acting is usually the weak point in MTG productions, it was every bit as rtrong ts the dancing and singing in this show. The updated Romeo and Juliet theme proved captivating and emotional. It was a long time coming, but West Side Story was well worth the wait. CHILDREN ' S TLiEATD Pinocchio, that classic children ' s fa- vorite, was enthusiastically received when children ' s theatre presented it on December 3-5 in the Student Union Theatre. The three directors, Fay Cruikshanks, Paul Glo ' vr. :v; La i Sironen, proved that with hard work and maybe a little wishing upon a star, a talented, coordinated group of danc- ers, singers, musicians, and actors could pull off an excellent performance that pleased children of all ages in the audience. The simple story of a puppet who becomes a real little boy through the magic of love was a huge success and set a high standard for future chil- dren ' s theatre productions. In the spring, Children ' s Theatre trans- formed the student union theatre into that magical land somewhere over the rainbow when they presented The Wizard of OZ from April 21-25. Based on the popular MGM movie, the production delighted children and adults alike in the standing room only audiences. Director Tim Cournoyer PL VfJw% :. ' .; A 5S 2EL Eg 4i- ' Vti i l 1. 1 ir.jSS adapted the original screenplay, musi- cal director Sheila Comstock tran- scribed the music, and choreographer Janice Beetle kept the cast on its toes. Familiar characters like Dorothy, Toto, The Scarecrow, Tin man, Lion, and Good and Bad Witches, with the support of the chorus, did a good job with this technically difficult play. Chil- dren ' s Theatre continues to grow in experience and is clearly building a strong tradition of quality theatre for young people. ' Si V a - 1 M ; t I THEATRE COMPANY Theatre professor Fran E. Mello di- rected the smash hit of the WSC the- atre season when he staged One Flew Over the Cuckoo ' s Nes t in Novem- ber. The tense story of Randal P. McMurphy, a psychiatric ward patient who challenges the power of the head nurse Ratchet rivited the audiences to their seats. His brilliant, though doomed rebellion touched everyone who saw the play. The wonderful act- ing of the supporting cast elevated the show to the heights one has come to expect from Professor Mello. Rave re- views insured full houses and the show was both an artistic and financial suc- cess. During the spring semester, The- atre Company presented two black comedies: Little Murders, by Jules Feiffer, April 6-9, directed by Michael Finnerty, and Home at Six , by Lee Falk, May 3 4, directed by Pattie Gillespie. Black comedy, a genre of drama which invites the audience to laugh at some depressing or shocking events, is a tricky type of theatre to produce successfully, but both plays proved to be enjoyable and poignant. Both casts worked long and hard on their shows and their enthusiasm paid off: the audiences clearly enjoyed the productions. v X XX Where is it?How can I get there?Do you have to pay?I don ' t understand that one.. ' s, bands, good conversations, new friends, old friends, and very special friends could always be found in the RAT. Whether you were celebrating graduation or just get- ting through another week, Senior Daze was the place to be!!!!!! C aii of 1983 Can you remember the end of the summer of 79 , trying to enjoy the last few days of vacation with home town friends, saying good- byes and packing all that stuff, soon to be heading off to Westfield State College. Finally the day had come to pack the car, believe it or not, all those boxes, bags, suitcases and even milkcrates fit. Then onto the Mass Pike, at least for most of us. Considering the majority of us lived in Massachusetts, within a few hours you arrived at your new residence. For some of us it was Davis, Lammers, Dickinson or Scanlon, others it was off-campus housing — maybe Day Ave., Noble Ave., Heritage House, the White House, The Fort, Ice Palace, Blanford, whatever the case may have been, we lugged those belongings to our new living quarters. The fortunate ones were those that decided to stay under moms and dads roof, and didn ' t have to go through all of this. So many things to adjust to — roommates, professors, advisors (if you were lucky you got an advisor that you could understand), classes, cafe food, and the list goes on. Within a few weeks our class govern- ment was formed. We were becoming a class more and more each day with the help of our Class President Rick Sewall all the way to our Class Representative to Senate Linda Feinerman. Perhaps the hardest thing that we had to learn was to handle ourselves and all of our freedom. Realizing that we had to write letters in order to receive letters. Learning from our mistakes, which all of us had done at least once in our college career. We were beginning to catch on and become more familiar with the new surroundings. This was easily done when we were sophomores 58 and it was someone elses turn to be freshman. Did we actually act like that? Linda Feinerman now Class President were she stayed for 3 years, although her backbone changed every year. Semester after semester just flew by, taking 1 credit P.E. classes just to make things easier. Going from hang out to hang out whether it was the days of The Nook, The Westgate, Kellihers, The Grove, Hounds Head, Chuck ' s, Benjamin ' s or just picking up a six pack or maybe a keg at Ryan ' s, Cork n ' Bottle, Pop the Cork, and probably on a Wednesday nite because that ' s when the weekend started. During our years at Westfield State College many significant events occured in the outside world. Although at times it might have slipped our minds that the outside world continued on while we were at State. Usually we were fortunate enough to eventually hear about them. It is impossible to list all of them but here are a few: Carter out — Reagan in, hostages taken in Iran, Olympic Boycott, John Lennon killed, President Reagan shot, Pope John Paul II shot, Prince Charles and Lady Di married — son born, and then there was the end of M A S H. It was easier to remember the happenings in Westfield especially at the College . How about: Campus Center renovations, teacher ' s strike, football becoming a team after being a club for 3 years, new alcohol policy, Pasquales burned down, Sterling Radiator Strikers- (near the pike), relocation of Ryan ' s. Some of these we laughed at, others made us quite perturbed. Little did we know that the final outcome could be quite beneficial to us, the awesome Class of 1983 !!!!!!! 59 iAiiV is I got A 56 , what did you get? D something , I ' m always at the end of the lottery for registration. I ' ll never get the classes I want. The mad rush began at Wilson Aud. Students waiting impatiently for their name to be called and once it was you grabbed your packet and booked over to the gym. Finally made it into the gym and the confusion began. Which line do I go to first? What class do I really want? Why am I here? Do I really need biology, maybe I ' ll take a skills class, how about Dr. Bob ' s class? No wonder they gave us the whole day off, we needed it to figure our schedule. 60 Bf T - - -- —. •- -.. Past and present class offices were recog- nized and Tim Lambe, the editor of Tekoa ' 83 presented a special Dedica- tion Award to Mr. Robert Malloux for all of his help. Hours before both, stu- dents in various forms of formal dress could be seen hurrying around cam- pus. New dresses and suits emerged from closets, new hair-dos were care- fully arranged, and the local florists ex- perienced an upswing in business. Aft- ter the dinners, a welcome change fr- om the usual scanlon food, there was dancing and romancing to the live music. SENATE BANQUET Chez Joseph was the setting for the Senate Banquet on May 5. More than just an excuse to dress up and party, the ban- quet was held to present awards to de- serving students for their hard work from the student senate. Outstanding achieve- ments and dedication were recognized and awarded. Afterward, there was din- ner and dancing to Spanky . Special buses were provided to insure safe trans- portation to and from the event and there were no unfortunate incidents to spoil the fun. 66 wmmmm 7 m 3 f , p ' I f n £t ' ■CO C J a BUM : ' i r 4 m - -i 69 When is it? ... We have lots or room to improve, com- ments Coach Roger LeClerc, but overall we were pleased since it was our first year on the varsity level. One exceptionally bright spot for the Owls was the superb play of senior nose guard John Fahey of West Springfield. Fahey gave 150% each game, maintains Coach Le- Clerc. He played hurt and still was a stabiliz- ing influence on and off the field. WSC got a splendid season from freshman tailback Ron •lr TviJ k ' J|[ B •)[•(.( til 1 1 U n fif M ' r 1 1 ' kh j I ries. Receivers Brad Clark and Ed Fitzgerald enjoyed standout campaigns. Fitzgerald hauled in 15 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns, while Clark made 16 catches for 234 yards. Injuries to key defensive players damaged the Owls chances throughout the campaign. Jamie Kaczowka of Uxbridge, a strong defensive tackle, was the squad ' s lead- ing pass rusher and one of the top sackers despite painful injuries. When he was healthy, affirms Coach LeClerc, no tackle in New England Football Conference could con- tain him. Another bright light was freshman defensive back Mickey Costa, who improved throughout the fall while freshman center Dave Smith came on strong during the latter part of the season. Mithc Macomber, a fine blocker, found time to rack up on 143 yards on the ground in 51 tries. Sophomore linebacker Chris Kinback, a transfer from Mass. Maritime, was another anchor on defense, leading the squad in tackles. % A t ■. . K wi ■0 ' fi ' L ■2V Jfc «t9 if « e 1$ i ..jt tew . . k IUi ; ; ifcS fc : ' J J ' 1 p K. W Coach Cathy O ' Neil ' s hustling Lady Owls finished 7-7 overall and were 3-2 in the Mass. Conference final standings, although they were hit by a host of injuries right from the start of the season. Captain Debbie O ' Reilly, the gifted senior, led the team in scoring for the second straight year with 12 goals and one assist. Robin Murphy had six goals and one assist, Nancy Macleod five goals, Colleen Donegan two goals and three assists. Senior star O ' Reilly made the All-Conference squad at midfield along with Beth Childs; sophomore forward Donegan, junior center-halfback Terry Eager and junior goalie Vicky Bourque also earned All- Conference honors. Bourque earned six of her team ' s seven wins through shutouts. The Lady Owl hooters turned in a 7-6 overall record for Coach Mike Walker. WSC bowed in its first three games but roared back with victories in seven of their last nine contests to make the finals in the NEWISA Tournament. Westfield, ranked third in the tourney, tripped sixth-seeded Boston Universi- ty, 2-0, and edged second-ranked Keene State, TO, before falling to Springfield College, TO, in the final round. Lisa Benoit led the team in scoring with nine goals and three assists for 12 points. Benoit was named to the All- New England honors. Goalie Lisa Kavanaugh also turned in a superb The Owls were riding the crest midway through the season with a brilliant 8-1 record but were forced to forfeit all victories due to playing with an ineligi- ble student. Thus, Westfield State fin- ished with a 4-11-2 overall mark under Coach Jim Fonte. Despite the forfeits, Owl fans had plenty to cheer with for- ward Peter Buchanan and back Bart McCarthy being named to the All-Mass Conference team. Buchanan scored 17 goals and had three assists to lead the Owls in scoring. Neal Buchanan had four goals and six assists, while Diego Cruz collected four goals and five as- sists. Dave Lima had four goals and three assists. Bdk- Under dedicated Coach Dave Laing, WSC was second in the Mass. Confer- ence with a 4-1 league record. Captain Lori Plock, the fiery junior, and fresh- man Sue Dalrymple were two reasons for the Lady Owls ' success. Plock, the Number one performer, made All-Con- ference and will once again be counted on next fall as the heart of the squad. A pair of fine freshmen, Denise Gagnon and Kathy lion, also warmed Coach Laing ' s heart. Kathy was the most improved player of the whole team, according to Laing. Also cited for top performances were freshmen Cory Dine plus sophomore Kathy Tarrant. V ' ' The Owl netmen finished second in the Mass. Conference behind a 6-1 league record. They were 9-3 overall. Coach Loren Bressor was pleased with the whole team, but pays particular tribute to number one man Mike Fowler. Mike is an outstanding player in both singles and doubles, observes Coach Bressor. He plays a patient game and likes to outlast his opponent. Fowler also has the ability to go to the net well. The other four Owl players, Bo Easyerbrook (number three), Peter Gardner (four), Buddy Hood (five) and Bob Frazier (six), also enjoyed strong campaigns. Easter- brook, a strong baseliner, graduates next spring. Gardner had the best over- all percentage in combined singles and doubles matches. He was a sensational 6-1 in singles play. Hood was a deter- mined, hard worker while Frazier stood out as a great scrambler. Number two man Rich Holbert, a sen- The highlight of the season was a big 6- ior, enjoyed a solid season and will be a 3 triumph over Coast Guard at strong candidate for the team award Westfield. Coach Vivienne Hebert and her young team finished sixth of nine teams in the first New England Division III Gymnas- tics Championships. This was a fine accomplishment for a fairly young and inexperienced team. Sophomore, Sue Cole, was the best all- around competitor for the Owls, plac- ing 8th with a score of 26.85, less than four points behind second place. The only award winner, and highest finish for a Westfield woman, was Kathleen Lamarche. The sophomore vaulter fin- ished third with an 8.25 score, only .15 from a first place. Other youngsters that should improve to give next year ' s team a solid base are; freshmen Gail Viscardi (18th in the vault, 31st in floor exercises) and Vida Stark (25th in floor exercises), sopho- mores Kris Dolaher (24th in uneven bars, 27th on balance beam), Kristen Eckman (17th on balance beam) and Marilyn White (29th in floor exercises). • i ' • - ... Then they dropped four consecutive tough ones, one being an OT loss to U. of Conn., another being a one goal loss to Fitchburg, an ECAC post-season tournament qualifi- er. Nevertheless, they ended strong be- fore the January break with four wins, including the championship of the Cod Fish Bowl. After the break the team did not get on track until late January, early February, when they won four in a row. Finishing the season with a pair of losses left the pucksters at 13-12-1; 2-2-1 in the conference (tied for 3rd). Standouts for the Owls were All Con- ference Selection Jeff Wojcik, senior winger, who lead the team in scoring for the third straight year. Much of their power will be returning with ju- niors Rick Williams and Bruce Hurst, 32 and 34 points, and freshman defen- semen, Peter Laviolette. The goal tending duties were split between sen- ior Chip Golash and freshman Gary Mandia, and both showed some bright flashes but for the most part were in- consistent. .j jj . , m -y. r This was the first Varsity Swim team at Westfield State, and the season was successful. Other majq contributors, who will all be back nei: year, were junior guard, Denise Fostee leader in assists and steals and secon in scoring, sophomore forwards, D Deacon and Sandy Gangi, sophomor guard, Celeste Femia, and Freshma forward, Lise Houde. The Westfield State Men ' s Basketball team started off the season on a tear, winning its first three games and five of the first seven. This included a four and one slate against conference opposition before the Christmas break. Resulting from the loss of several key players, the team slumped in January and February, finishing at 7-16, 6-6 in the conference (tied for 4th). Coach Hilton White was happy with the play of a few youngsters that will build a nucleus for an improved team next year. Brian Duren, freshman forward, was the most impressive of them, leading the team in scoring and making the ECAC Rookie of-the-week Honor Roll. m Coach Fred Demers ' ladies turned in a 4-1 record to finish second in the Mass. Conference to champion Salem State. The Lady Owls were 8-8 overall. We had a fine season, notes Coach Demers, but what made it even more gratifying was the support and enthusi- asm of the student body, especially to- ward the end of the schedule. WSC got excellent performances from a trio of talented seniors, co-captains Joanne Sullivan and Sue Johnson plus Lisa Kelly. Sullivan stood out as an excep- tional blocker and solid hitter, while Johnson was a tremendous defensive performer and hitter, and Kelly ' s lead- ership and overall ability also was a key to Westfield ' s good showing. ; . .. ' -J. . i : The Westfield State Volleyball team ended with a disappointing 6-6 record after showing promise early in the sea- son. A number of injuries to key veter- ans depleted the squad of both num- bers and experience. There is a bright future expected, though, with four of the five letter win- ners freshmen and sophomores. The only exception is next year ' s captain, junior Peter Gardner, who was also voted MVP of this year ' s team. The Westfield State Baseball team ended the season with an 18-17 record, 9-5 in the conference, good for second place. The Owls did qualify for the ECAC tournament for the second con- secutive year, but lost in the first round to Colby. Despite the disappointing record, Westfield played some fine baseball, defeating some of the best teams in New England, and the nation. Among them were victories over Division II Valdosta State, who ended up third in the nation, and Columbus College, an NCAA tournament qualifier on their spring trip. Up north, wins were re- corded over AIC, a 20-game winner in Division II, Eastern Conn., a 30-game winner and an NCAA finalist, and Mass Maritime, an ECAC qualifirer with 20 plus wins. Doubleheader sweeps were registered against Salem State, NCAA qualifier, and North Adams, ECAC qualifier. Outstanding individual performances point specifically to senior captain Ron Biagi, First Team All New England, fin- ishing with a .409 average, 9 home runs and 34 RBI ' s. Sophomore catcher Dave Carlucci was second team All New England, with an average of .348, 8 home runs and 29 RBI ' s. All Confer- ence Selections, along with these two, were; Mike Conville (soph. OF), Phil Mitchell (Sr. P), and Lane Steek (Jr. IF). Coach Joyce O ' Donnell ' s Westfield State softball team made a second con- secutive trip to the NCAA Tourna- ment, but was eliminated the first day of the regionals by Trenton State, the eventual national champion. The Owls finished the year at 17-15, and second in the conference at 7-3. The team ' s overall record is deceiving because of the stiff competition they played throughout the year. Double- header losses to Division I U Mass and Division II Central Conn, and Spring- field were helpful in getting the team ready for Division III competition, de- spite looking bad on the record. In Divi- sion III, they ended up 16-8. An All-American performer was senior center fielder Kate Broga. She ended the year with a .419 batting average, 2 home runs and 29 RBI ' s. Her most out- standing accomplishment was 33 sto- len bases. Senior third-baseman, Karen Stolecki, was also voted All NEISA along with Broga. She had a .276 aver- age and was a solid defensive player with 93 assists. The top pitcher on the club was senior Diane Hatch, who pitched in 20 games, with 10-7 record and a 1.83 E.R.A. m The Westfield State Women ' s outdoor track team ended the season with an 8- 3 record. There were a few outstand- ing performers that deserve recogni- tion. Javelin thrower, Laura Rosen, after placing 6th in the New Englands, finished 11th in the National Cham- pionships. Other national qualifiers, who did not place were: Ethel Burge, 100m Colleen Murphy, 5000m, and the 400m relay team of Burge, Cheryl Simmitt, Leanne Houle, and Sue Dion. ■j if i ■Coach Jerry Gravel ' s Westfield State men ' s track team was the only sport to bring home a conference Champion- ship in the 82-83 year. Following its MASCAC Championship, the Owls finished in 12th place in the New Eng- land Division III Championships at MIT. They ended the season with a 13- 2 record in meets. The top performer of the year was jav- elin thrower Dave Kaczenski, who placed 5th in the National Champion- ships, earning All-American honors. The other national qualifier was Mitch Longley, hammer, who did not place in the meet. All New England performers were: Wayne Panetta, 400m, Kevin Richardson, 400 intermediate hurdles, Dave Golash, discus, Paul Flemming, 3000m steeple chase, Mike Rooney, 3000m steeple chase, the 400m relay team of Jeff Starr, Carl Dagenais, Rich- ardson and Panetta, and the 1600m relay ream of Scott Tomlin, Sean Con- ners, Dave Sinnery and Dagenais. « V v- 4 ' r ' ' it lK ' ■Si «.  f. ; r i c K f JE?r; .« W4- . L fi)@ The Westfield State lacrosse team end- ed up a fine season last weekend. They finished with a tough loss to U. of Low- ell, 9-4, which was the deciding factor in Lowell edging out Westfield by a game for the Colonial League Cham- pionship. Overall, the Owls were 84, including big wins over Trinity, 10-8, Mass. Maritime, 14-4, U Mass Boston, 13-6, and Plymouth State, 11-7. Of the losses, two were one goal defeats, one to Babson in overtime and the other to MIT, and, in addition to Lowell, the Owls lost a hard fought battle at Springfield College, an ECAC Tourna- ment qualifier. Two outstanding individual perform- ers all season were senior captains Mark Dalton (Burlington) and Marty Curren (Weymouth). Mark, an at- tacker, scored 40 goals, had 21 assists and a total of 61 points, more than a quarter of the team ' s points. On the other side of the field, Marty, a fourth year goalie, started all 12 games, allow- ing only 74 goals while saving 175 shots for a 70.28. Dudley, MA 01570 EHTCRY note To all of you who helped make this year ' s edition of TEKOA a reality, my sincerest thanks and deepest appreciation for a job well done. Good luck to the Class of 1983 and Westfield State, I am going to miss you! Serving as editor for a college yearbook like TEKOA is not a simple task. As well as the multitude of pictures, the layouts, the art work, and the editing there are the many administrative tasks to be handled. These include budgets, bids, vouchers, and endless meetings. Countless hours go into producing a 216 page book depicting the class of 1983 and Westfield State College. But all of this could never be accomplished without the support and dedicated service of many people. At the top of this list are the hard working individuals whose determination and talent produced this book: The TEKOA Staff. These eight in- dividuals spent endless hours creating what we believe is the finest book that Westfield State College has ever seen. My heartfelt thanks go to the following people for making my job, as editor, much easier! Ana Alves — Assistant Editor — who was behind me in every decision I made. You are not only a good friend but a hard worker and won- derful person. I could not have completed this book without you. I ' ll miss you. Best of luck in the future, I have great faith in you.! Denise Kemp — Layout and Design Editor — Her creativity and talent are proven on every single page of this book. When I met her a year ago, she told me she was going to make this book different from any other. Well you did, and many thanks for a job well done. Best of luck at Milton Bradley. Vanessa Reid — Copy Editor — Your excellent typing skills were a definite asset to TEKOA ' 83. Thank-you for the many hours Denise, you, and I spent preparing for all our deadlines. Your never-ending enthusiasm, hard work, and long hours have paid off. Because of you we made every deadline this year. You can be proud of your accomplishments in TEKOA ' 83. Best wishes and good luck in the future. Vickie Wilhelm — Business Editor — If I hear one more time, How much is it going to cost, it will be one time too many. The person who hires you should be privileged to have such a financial wizard on their hands. You were an asset to TEKOA in every sense of the world. Thanks! Demo — Photography Editor — I probably gave you the hardest time of any of the editors. But that was because we are two very different people. I like things done ahead of time, and you like working under pressure. But no matter what I ever said to you, you did a great job in theory. I am truly greatful for all your time and efforts. Karen Raleigh — Sales Editor — When we needed the extra funds for Gettysburg, the Hukelau, the color section etc . . . you were always there to raise it. Because of your excellent salesmanship we had some fun producing this book. Thanks! Steph DeFerie — Literary Editor — When we needed a literary editor with only six weeks left to school, I could not think of any one else but you. Thanks for accepting the job with such short time left, and doing a great job at it. Your whit and humor have added a new dimension to TEKOA ' 83. Photographic Studio ' s — Thanks for an excellent job during your first year as yearbook photographers. You would have never known that you had never done this before. You acted like pro ' s. Thanks also for never giving up on me when things went wrong. You are the greatest! Brooks Robards and Ron Michaud — Advisors — Your constant encouragement, ideas, and advice were of great influence to me throughout the year. When things were going wrong and I thought I would never make it, you were there to cheer me up and help pick up the pieces. TEKOA has been an excellent learning experience for me because of the two of you. I will be forever greatful for having such fine advi- sors. I would also like to thank the following people for their sincere interest and dedication to TEKOA, and their undying faith in me. For this and 214 J much more I thank each of you. Your concern and dedication will always be an example for me to follow throughout my life. President Pilecki — You are one of the biggest supporters of all student leaders at Westfield State College. You help make all the time and hard work seem worthwhile, with your concern, encouragement, and compliments. Thank you for making my past two years at Westfield State both academically challenging and memorable. Gareth Lynch — Westfield State is very fortunate to have such a fine public relations representative. Your ideas and assistance were of great help to me. Many thanks for your work with the faculty section. Maureen Fitzgerald — I wish you luck in your new role as advisor of TEKOA ' 84. 1 am sure you will be a significant addition to the staff of TEK.OA ' 84. Hazel Stevens — You are an asset to both TEKOA and Westfield State College. Your cheery personality and lovely smil ' e brightened up my worst days. I thank you for always being there when I needed someone to talk to. I am really going to miss you! I hope some day I have a secretary with all the wonderful qualities you possess. Bob Mailloux — What can I say? You are TEKOA! Your nine years of dedicated service has been indespensible and often overlooked. From the bottom of my heart many thanks. Dr. Hill — You were always first on my list to go see when things were not going right. You always seemed to come up with a simple solu- tion to rectify the situation. Because of you, I kept my sanity and things ran smoothly. Many thanks for all the help with the budget, senior fee, and specifications. Joan Cashman — and the copy editor — It always seemed that whenever I needed something copied it had to be done yesterday. No mat- ter how short a notice I gave you, you always came through for me. I thank you for all your efforts and time spent on TEKOA projects. Debbie Cushing — You made the dreadfull task of correspondance and record storage very simple with the word processor. I am truly gratefull for the long hours you spent teaching me the word processor. This is one skill I am sure I will use in the future. Dr. Joseph Pappalardo — Thank you for taking on the responsibility of being my internship advisor. You deserve to be commended on developing such a fine educational program. John Carrier — Without your help I do not believe there would be a TEKOA ' 83. Your dedication and personality make you an outstanding representative. Even though we may call you Buckwheat , I really appreciate your sincere efforts in making this the best book Westfield State has ever had. Thanks to Doris Fecteau, Lynn Vella and the copy center, Jeanette Brzoska, Lorinda-Sue LeBarnes, Andy Johnson, Student Senate, Marion Zomek, Irene Parda, Dr. Nevins, and Daryl Hendry for all your time and effort you put into TEKOA ' 83, Thank-you Westfield State College for giving me the chance to meet many fine administrators, faculty members, and students. My four years here have been both challenging and memorable. I will never forget the many memories I hold dear to me from Westfield State. TIM LAMBE 215 13W DESIGNEES EAGE In closing, I hope you enjoyed the 1983 edition of Tekoa. It was based on the theme of The Famous Scene, a song by Bob Seger. The book was geared toward the seniors (now graduates), of W.S.C. Our goal was to photograph as many different seniors as we possibly could and represent our years at State in a positive and tasteful manner. I hope you agree that we accomplished these goals. Students do not realize how much work is put into the creation of a yearbook. The many hours of meetings, decisions, heated argu- ments, typing and layouts. This book would not have been possible without the help of some very special people, Maureen Noonan, Maryellen McCarthy, Jill Broyles, Susan Hassett, Lisa Miele, Joan Lehoullier, Nancy Macleoud and especially Cheryl Sullivan. Cheryl was always there to help out. Whether it was to gather photographs, contact people, do layouts or just give me support — Thanks Cheryl. Without this staff behind me I might have given up back in September. Also I would like to thank the students who co- operated with us in the staging of the photographs of the Color Section and the Divider Pages. Photo- graphs were obtained from Jim Lombard and Bob Culkeen of the Media Studies Dept., Matt Osborn, Ron Brown, Ted Noonan and The Westfield Evening News.
