The arts program here at Westfield State College encompass music, theatre, and the fine arts. Many productions, gallery showings, and musical performances occur regularly here on campus for students and the Westfield Community. These students show great tal- ents and dedication to the Arts and their contributions to the College Community are greatly appreciated. 18 Jesus Christ Superstar JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR %%■1 9 Jesus Christ Superstar On April 27, 1 982 the curtain went up on one of the best Musicals Westfield State has seen in many years. Jesus Christ Super- star was not only inspiring, energetic, and enthusiastic, but emotional. It brought a new dimension to M.T.G. The show por- trayed great diversity and depth being the schools first rock opera. Musical director, Michael Avila, brought great musical ex- citement and sound to this show. As usual Kathleen Greer, as choreographer, added motion and enthusiasm to the cast and the show. Her talents as an exceptional choreo- grapher were well exemplified in this show. Tracey MacLean, a new director of M.T.G. surprised us all with her remarkable talent for directing. She brought together the best from the actors, singers, and dancers and should be congratulated! 20 Grease GREASE 2 1 Grease Leather jackets, bobby socks, rock ' n roll. and a Dick darkish disc jockey these were some of the sights and sounds which filled Dever Auditorium when WSC ' s Musical Theater Guild presented Grease from December 2-5. Mary Duddy (Sandy Dum- browski) and Peter Ransom (Danny Zuko) led the talented energetic cast under the direction of George MacGillvray. Grease was choreographed by Kathleen Greer and musically directed by Michael Avila. Grease will certainly be remembered by those who were involved in the production and those who were lucky enough to see it. 22 Children ' s Theatre CHILDREN ' S THEATRE 23 Children ' s Theatre In November The WSC Children ' s The- atre presented the musical — You ' re a Good Man Charlie Brown, led by John Russell as Charlie Brown and Valerie Grande as Lucy. Director David Roux. Choreographer Kerry Ann Kennedy, and Musical Director William Condon com- bined their talents along with an outstand- ing cast to make this performance a winner. Free to Be, You and Me was presented in April under the direction of Debi John- son. Consisting of a cast of ten and a four piece band, the play quickly captured the hearts of the audience from the first num- ber with an intricate blending of harmony and direct contact with the children. Paul Glover and Donna Trapp the music directors along with the cast put on a super performance. 24 Theatre Company THEATRE COMPANY 25 Theatre Company The Westfield State College Theatre Company opened its 1981-1982 season with The Real Inspector Hound ' directed by Debi Johnson. The WSC Theatre Company concluded their busy year with The Effect of Gamma Rays On Man-in- the-moon Marigolds directed by Lisa Conner and Antigone under the direction of Michael Finnerty. Those who saw these many fine performances can attribute to the impressive and productive year the WSC Theatre Company had. Among these renova- tions were the painting of the gallery and putting in track lighting so the paintings could be seen better. The Gallery is used to portray works done by students as well as several famous artists. The works are usual- ly exhibited for a month being open from three-eight and two-five on weekends. Many students as well as the college com- munity visited the Gallery this past year to see the works of different artists. The Gal- lery is run by several college work study students. The Ely Art Gallery did an excel- lent job in its first full year of operation. It hopes that next year will be just as success- ful if not more. 28 Music MUSIC Westfield State Chorale 11 II BBBBBrv Bl If HH NT, PI f bbbbp V mr LtATbbbV n_ Bbb bbbbm bbm bB sbM - r • l ' -sl jh ™Bt B. v ¥ H 11 ll • « AAbi EbB ll BJ BjBl Ba Bl BAfll HF Bi ■H L L H H H H V Br M BBBiBBm mmWi bIbBBW-BbIbBE bI BBbbW bV BBBBBj ■■— II — ' ■jr ' tJif SPJ .vLbbf |JL JBbjbb FM v JV B i ■Smi f B V : j ■' ■-  SwBJI IE I bi Stf ; J? It is very well known for its fine performances off campus as well as on campus. There are six ensembles that perform throughout the year. They are the Jazz Band, Lab Jazz Band, Jazz Rock Singers, Glee Club, Cho- rale, and the Windphilharmonia. The mu- sic department offers something for every student, whether it be beginning piano, or basic music theory. 32 Music 33 Campus Communications CAMPUS COMMUNICATIONS The Campus Communication at W.S.C. are varied. There are the daily radio shows on WSKB, the weekly TV show In-Focus. Student Senate meetings, the school news- paper the OWL, and the annual yearbook Tekoa. Each organization is run by the stu- dents themselves with the advice of a facul- ty advisor. These medium try to effectively repre- sent Westfield State College. They put in many long hours of hard work to accom- plish this goal. Campus communications is a very important element of college life as it draws students, faculty, and administration together as one body. The services provided benefits the reading, listening, and watch- ing public as well as those students present- ing their services who are learning to work together for a common goal. 34 In Focus Every Wednesday night the Television production classes put on In-Focus. The show covers recent events which effect stu- dents on campus. Such positions as direc- tor, camerman, tech director, and anchor- man are rotated weekly to insure the in- volvement of all. In-Focus acts as a source of learning to all involved, and informs the college public on upcoming social, aca- demic, and athletic activities. Each week various people are interviewed on acknowl- edgements of achievements or to publicize a campus activity. In-Focus is a great learn- ing experience for those who participate in it and acts as a relaxing and informative break from the library for those who gather to watch it. 36 Owl 37 Owl I • Westfield State College has its own bi- weekly publication called the Owl. The newspaper is comprised of past, present, and upcoming campus and local events. This is the only written medium that keeps the college community informed. Any stu- dent, club, or organization can submit a picture or photo in the owl. The Owl has many editorials written by students and faculty relating to many as- pects of college life. The Owl also has a Sports section listing all the box scores and highlights of the many sports events on campus. One of the highlights of the news- paper is its excellent Arts and Entertain- ment section. Editor Linda Kasparian and her staff take a difficult job and make it interesting as well as informative. The owl should be congratulated. 38 Student Senate STUDENT SENATE Senate The Student Senate is a 58 member gov- erning board representing the student body of Westfield State. The Student Senate oversees campus activities and acts as the student liason in various legislative aspects of the college community. The purpose of the board as stated in its constitution is, To provide and promote a partnership in gov- ernance among all segmants of the college community and to insure opportunities for all students to fully participate in campus wide activities and organizations. The Student Senate controls the funds for all campus clubs and organization. All posi- tions are elected annually by the student body in campus wide elections. All dorms, classes, and commuters are represented in this governing board. 40 Tekoa TEKOA 4! Tekoa The Tekoa yearbook is an annual publi- cation representing the Westfield State College Community. This publication is distributed every fall bringing back memo- ries of the last two semesters. Although Senior pictures are included, the book re- presents the college community and not a particular class. The task of putting together a meaning- ful college yearbook is not easy. But editor Christina Chaisson and her staff have put many long hard hours to accomplish this goal. The yearbook must combine the aca- demics along with the social activities of campus life. It must also include all facets of campus life such as dorms, clubs, and special events. Tekoa would like to thank all who help make this book possible. 42 W.S.K.B. W.S.K.B WSKB had a tremendous year as they are in the process of increasing their watt- age from 10 watts to 100. Soon 91.5 will reach Springfield and our nearby towns and communities. This year ' s executive board includes Paul Barry, station manager, Lisa Lewie, Vice- President, John Connolly, Business man- ager, Jeff Brusig, Music Director, Vinnie Vassallo, Secretary, Bob Gainor, Produc- tion Manager, Greg Testa III. Operations Manager, Suzanne Sullivan, News Direc- tor, and John Martins, Sports Director. 43 Freshman Orientation Nv _lkA x § ft ' -flk  • ' EI • • F 1 x v BBS • - I Aid 44 Freshman Picnic FRESHMAN JUNIOR PICNIC The Freshman-Junior Picnic has been a tradition at Westfield State for many years. It is put on in September so that the incom- ing Freshman Class can get to know their sister class the Juniors. Under the direction of Junior Class President Linda Feinerman the picnic was a great success and enjoyed by all. Some of the highlights of the picnic were the egg toss, (freshman throwing reg- ular eggs Juniors throwing hard boiled eggs) the pie eating contest, and the human pyramid. The Junior Class should be con- gratulated on a job well done. 45 Dorm Life DORM LIFE dor mi to ry (dor-ma-tor-e) a residence hall providing sleeping rooms. 46 Apartment Complex APARTMENT COMPLEX s e y m o u r H a 1 1 47 Apartmenl Complex Welch, Seymour and Conlin Halls make up the Apartment Complex.
