Harvey Roazen Ph.D. In Memoriam On Wednesday, 1 March 1978, Dr. Harvey Roazen died. He was 49 years old. It ' s always a tragedy when death claims a man who is still young, who was in the midst of what has been termed, the generative years . In the case of Harvey Roazen, the tragedy was even more profound, because to have known Harvey was to learn from him. He taught us all so much both as a teacher and as a person. And the tragedy of his death we recog- nize now, is our tragedy for he could have taught us so much more. All who knew him recognized that Harvey Roazen was intel- lectually brilliant. He possessed an encyclopedic-like knowl- edge, not only of psychology but of the liberal arts in general. A brilliant mind and a wealth of knowledge are major assets, espe- cially for the college professor. There were some, especially students, however, who felt that these qualities of mind were not Harvey ' s most salient or most important characteristics. Rather, these people focused and related to Harvey ' s other traits — to his remarkable capacity for caring and to his exquisite sensitivity to the discomfort of others. This was a man who loved and who gave of himself unsparingly. And it is for this reason especially, that so many in turn, loved Harvey back. What made Harvey remarkable in the eyes of both students and faculty was that quite apparently, he did not expend energy to be loveable. Indeed, Harvey did not want to rule or control, but to serve. He never demeaned. He enhanced. If we stop to think about it we realize that in his relations with us Harvey Roazen was not so much a taker as he was a giver. He was truly unique because he was one of those successful human beings who found far more reward in giving than in taking. He was a teacher, albeit somewhat disorganized. To many however, he was the personnification of the dedicated teacher for, he responded, and positively, to each and every student who questioned, requested or who needed him. His function he believed to be, to serve the student. His goal was the student taught. Thus, while he seldom had time to organize himself, he always had time for the student. If Harvey was uncommitted to pedagogical efficiency (and he was) it was precisely because he was totally committed to the idea that his function was to serve the student. SERVICE, was Harvey ' s raison d ' etre. It was the final product of his love, of his remarkable capacity to give. Harvey the teacher, was complemented by Harvey, the cru- sader. As was so true about so much else about him however, Harvey was a very different kind of crusader. Unlike others, Harvey ' s crusades were not so much concerned with the venti- lation of personal hostility as they were genuinely concerned with the rectification of injustice. Harvey possessed another quality, one about which few of us knew — unflagging courage. It was only after his death that some of us learned that Harvey knew for at least two years that his time with all of us was indeed short. He continued to work. He continued his functions and if anything, took on more. With the exception of his wife none among us knew about his physical agonies and pains or of the concommitant emotional anguish which such a feeling human being unquestionably experienced. Several months have elapsed since Harvey passed away. We find that we miss him — and alot. Never more, shall we chuckle seeing him shuffle down the corridor ' a la Charlie Chaplin. Never more shall we be startled by his wardrobe, always of vintage passe ' and often of colors bombastic. Never more, shall we be entertained listening to him deliver one of his impromptu expositions on everything from astrophysics to how Sicilians make wine. And we will go on missing him, all of us because we all recog- nize at some level that he would have continued to enhance and to enrich our lives. Still, in the years, too few, that we knew him, he taught us so very much, this Professor Roazen. He taught us how to love, how to serve, how to give, how to amend wrong and even, how to die. Pax tecum Harvey Roazen 14 16 Dedication Edward Scroxton Jr. Ed happy, helpful loving, caring, giving housefather, student, worker, person laughing, smiling, sharing sensitive, special friend Ed acted out the sincerity of his professional goals by combining academic study and daily work ex- periences with special needs stu- dents. He understood the value of translating theory into practice in the here and now. This is a significant message from Ed to those who aspire to work with persons considered special. Evelyn S. Shapiro 17 J M ' ■ % w t I V Freshman-Junior Picnic 20 by Richard Zwicker A new twist was employed at this year ' s freshman-junior pic- nic: organization. The end result was a more enjoyable and meaningful time for those involved. Instead of the students just eating and leaving, a number of activities were held after the meal. There was a human pyramid contest, the winning structure having a base of 18 bodies. A spirited tug of war was won by the freshman class. The juniors brushed off the defeat, rationalizing that there were more fresh- men than juniors. Other activities included football games, piggy back fights and frisbee throwing. After the games the junior officers sat the freshmen down and conducted a rap ression on the upcoming year. There were 685 students on hand, 110 more than last year. A number of teachers also showed up, some even participating in the tug of war. Bill O ' Leary, president of the junior class, was enthusiastic as usual. If the freshman class can continue to show the enthusi- asm they demonstrated at the picnic, things are going to be looking brighter at WSC. For once the traditional picnic achieved its purpose of getting the two classes together. And the sun was even shining. 21 Clean Up Camp Westy 22 Most people thought it was cancelled because we had a rain date set, Chuck Fitzgerald, vice-presi- dent of senate said about Clean-Up Camp Westy Day which took place on Oct. 29. Despite a small turnout, the group of about 25 students and administration members filled the pick-up truck three or four times. The people that came out did a very good job, Fitzgerald said. Fitzgerald said that the day was a success in the sense that the campus was cleaned up. He said that the ultimate purpose of the day failed. It ' s whole purpose was to get people to start thinking about the garbage they ' ve been throwing around, Fitz- gerald said. Dean Norman Hiersche was among the adminis- trators who turned out at Clean-up Camp Westy Day. 23 Halloween Party 24 lk 9 wFwmM J™ ' HfllfliC ■ r-j? Theatre Co. presented Edward Albee ' s Seascape at the Student Union Theatre, Nov. 17, 18, and 19. The Theatre Co. hired as guest director, Margaret Van Sant of City Studio Theatre, Northampton. Van Sant is director and coordinator of CST. Jessie and the Bandit Queen and Play With the Tiger, both produced at CST last season, are two of Van Sant ' s directing accomplishments. Seascape is a humorous portrayal of two mid- dle-aged couples who meet and evolve their lives at the beach. Sue Dean Olsen and John Mahoney play the ' Average American Couple, ' Nancy and Charlie. Lori A. Lusczynski and Roman Alis portray Sarah and Les- lie, the less than typical lizard couple. 26 Littlest Angel 27 Sugar 28 Emperor A Delight 29 Ginsberg Was Here Allen Ginsberg was here (with friend pony-tailed poet Peter Orlovsky on banjo and weirdness), com- peting with Holocaust , the times and Who ' s Al- len Ginsberg? All the freaks were there. Kerouac was there, a little drunk maybe, but there. Even Neal Cassidy, though not quite as fast as when he was On the Road, made an appearance. The performance started off with Ginsberg ' s America . Ginsberg brought his own band with him. With Ginsberg on something that looked like an accor- dian and Orlovsky supplying falsetto harmonies the duo launched into rousing renditions of William Blake ' s hit tunes from Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience . Showcased in the songs were fluttery voicings and refrains that seemed to go on forever. After Ginsberg ' s two hour performance (which in- cluded Orlovsky reading some of his own rather bizarre poems in a screaming monotone voice remi- niscent of an old town crier), there was an informal get together in the alumni lounge. 30 Senator Proxmire Speaks At WSC On April 2, 1978 approximately 200 persons turned out for one of the most dynamic lec- tures this college has ever seen. The reason was to hear the controversial Senator William Prox- mire, (Dem.) Wisconsin, speak on the topic of the Efficiency of Defense Spending. Senator Proxmire has been coined Nag of the Year by the N.Y. Daily News, Senator Scrooge due to New York ' s fiscal problems, and his most cherished award given by NASA, the earth is flat award for his opposition of their spending 14 million dollars to communi- cate with alien life. NASA also gave him the if Proxmire had his way, Columbus would still be in port award . The Senator is not without giv- ing out his own awards, for every month he awards to the most inefficient Govt. Bureau or Dept. his Golden Fleece Award , for outstand- ing waste of taxpayers money. Senator Proxmire premised his lecture on a sound theory that any spending for defense we don ' t need is a waste . He also maintained that defense spending has a peculiar inflation- ary effect. Senator Proxmire believes we need to pursue the following: To achieve peace we do need a strong military force, but for one purpose, to build the basis for arms control and eventual reduction. Right now our strength would be enhanced by cutting the FAT out. We would not have a weaker force but have a stronger force. Also, to achieve arms peace we should cut arms sales, and cut them now, while doing our very best to stop nuclear proliferation. 31 Registration 32 33 St Pat Party maoc thfc3rish l 2 FOR .11 O 8 ° u ' IN 5 U Bus. These were some of the characteristics featured when the Kenyon Mar- tin Mime troupe from Boston performed in the S.U. Theatre to a standing room only crowd. For the unitiated, mime is, in Kenyon Martin ' s own words the art of communicating a universal idea nonverbally, with body and space. The body ' s gestures are very simple, pure and economical. The performance by the two man, one woman troupe consisted of 11 skits, ranging in subject mat- ter from a man eating his lunch on a park bench to a dramatized version of someone being born, living and dying. The props were spare. A flat of a castle wall with pointed spires flanked the left of the stage. Occa- sionally recorded background music meshed with the actions of the performers. 36 Music Department 37 The March To Nowhere Thursday afternoon, February 2, at 3:30 Student Senate staged a march in protest of President Robert L. Randolph ' s decision to turn Scanlon cafeteria over to a concessionaire. At zero hour Scanlon was jammed with people. Bobbing signs spelling it all out ( Don ' t cook Harvey! etc.) hovered over the avalanche of heads. The exhilaration of protest was in the air. We ' re going to march to Randolph ' s house, and if he isn ' t there we ' ll go to Parenzo and talk to Sherburne! (spoken in a cappella scream, accent on Randolph and Sherburne ). But when we got to his house, the president wasn ' t home. It kind of put a damper on the surprise party, but we left our calling cards so Randolph would know we still thought about him. Next we went to see Sherburne in Parenzo, storming the halls. But his office was locked. During the course of our travels we marched past the caf. 38 Harvey Allen himself walked out and waved. The crowd went wild. The emotional fervor was just too much. At Randolph ' s house Channel 22 interviewed Joel Magrini (Student Senate president) and he outlined what we were trying to accomplish. Basically we are trying to show the administration that they can ' t push us around. After the interview Dean Sherburne actually did talk to us, in Denver auditorium. He didn ' t look too convincing, but the con- ditions weren ' t exactly conducive for a serious lecture. He said the release of Harvey Allen wasn ' t his decision. The major accomplishment of the march was the fact that it made noise. Stopping traffic, the television cameras — they made the noise a little louder. The thing about noise is that it eventually dies down. When the dust clears, everything is like it was before. 39 Canoe Races - 40 ' ■? -. -.:- • . 41 Familiar Sites 42 CUSTOMER PARKING 43 Familiar Sites 44 Bloodmobile P E: r-- ■■■:■ : ! ■ J ? Ford said Bates Cafeteria can accommodate 300 persons while the ' old ' rathskellar could only hold about 200 persons. In addition, Bates has hot and cold running water, and other essential equipment that the Student Union lacks. Another major consideration was that by m m ■T p ,T- f ' TTBgff -7- ' fJW| Mto . ■— ■• ■- .— ™A, B B 1 Ll - r B A r W jj m £ J - J| I -v il .a 46 converting a cafeteria into a pub, there is no problem in obtaining a license to sell beer and wine. Ford said that the bowling alley in the S.U. was considered as a possible rathskellar loca- tion, but the estimated cost of the endeavor would have been $50,000. The total cost of con- verting Bates was approximately $7,000. Building a separate pub on campus seems to be blocked by budget and obtaining a license. On the whole, Ford is optimistic. He said it is starting to break even, and that Thursday night crowds have been exceptionally good for busi- ness. Ford on what a rathskellar should be: I be- lieve it ' s a place for entertainment, good con- versation, and relaxation. I don ' t want to see it turn into a dive. If it does, it will be closed. 47 Disco Party 49 ( 49 Spring Ball 50 51 Students March Approximately 200 stu- dents, faculty and staff members marched in pro- test of a picture in the Owl of students dressed as Klu Klux Klan mem- bers. The picture appeared in a photo page on the Hal- loween dance. The Third World Organized the march on the day after the issue of the paper was dis- tributed on campus. They charged the Owl with be- ing insensitive to prob- 52 lems and history of blacks. The march started at the Student Union and went through the Scanlon Hall cafeteria and to Dever Auditorium. Dean of Students James Mc- Kenna heard the com- plaints of the people on the march. The people on the march said a race problem existed on campus. A meeting was set up for any one interested in try- ing to solve the problem. The picture was used because it was good print quality. We were trying to meet a deadline and were insensitive to the subject matter of the picture, Paul LeBlanc, editor-in- chief of the Owl said. It was my mistake and the picture should never have been printed. Third World 53 Student-Faculty Variety Show 54 IS:; ■:V. Danzig When soccer coach John Kurty came here in 1966, whoever would have thought that he ' d retire one of the win- ningest coaches in the nation? The answer is quite simple: most. If they were familiar with his career, first at Amherst Jr. High, and then Ludlow Sen- ior High School. In a career that included soccer, foot- ball, volleyball, baseball, and basketball, obviously coach Kurty will be most re- membered for his contributions to the sport of soccer. In a profession where you have to deal with the personalities of many young men, and a different set every four years or so, what is truly amazing is that in nearly three decades, he never had a losing season. Shortly after Christmas the Owls men- tor announced that he ' s retiring, not re- signing, but will continue teaching. Kurty said that teaching and coaching are both full time jobs, and it ' s just too tough to continue to do both. Kurty was instrumental in building the fine program Westfield has, sending teams to post season play six years in a row. In 1974, with an overall record of 17- 4-2, the Owls traveled to Wheaton Col- lege, Illinois, and placed third in the Di- vision III National Championships. When national championships are at stake many coaches and players tend to get nervous, but for Kurty it must have been commonplace, having played for national champs at Penn State in 1950 and 51. I ' ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with a lot of fine young men, Kurty said. In his 12 years directing soccer at Westfield Kurty has accumu lated an im- pressive 153-37-12 record, and retires with an overall record of 303-56-29. 66 WSC Tops! WESTFIELD, Ma. — The Smith Cup, a trophy symbolic of overall athletic excellence among the Massachusetts State Colleges, has been awarded to Westfield State College. The College ' s teams have won the Cup for three of the last five years. Scoring for the award is based on points given for the final con- ference standings of MASCAC teams. The top three competing colleges receive points towards their final totals. The year 1976 was the first in which Womens sports — includ- ing Tennis, Field Hockey, Basket- ball, Volleyball, and Softball — were incorporated into the scor- ing system. In this way, the Con- ference gained a unified and total approach to MASCAC competi- tion. 67 N - JF|H£T flasr.as 68 69 Basketball Rough For B-Ball By Jeff Connell The Westfield State College Men ' s Basketball Team ended their season with three disappointing losses to Fitchburg, North Adams, and Framingham State to finish with an 11-14 record. Coach Sartori ' s squad started slowly this year with a 4-9 mark, but matured as a team and worked their way to .500, sparked night after night by the consis- tency of Team Most Valuable Player Tim Farrell. The 6 ' 5 sophmore from Dalton, Mass. led the Owls in virtually every of- fensive category. Farrell won the MVP award for his effort in the WNEC Classic, and was named to two other All-Tourna- ment Teams in the Codfish Bowl and the Mayor ' s Tournament. During the course of the season WSC was involved in nine games which were decided by just one or two points, and lost eight of those. At one point, however, the Owls won seven of nine games. The pleasant surprise of the season was Wilbur Daniels, the 27 year old freshman who came on to start later into the season, and played with enthusiasm of an 18 year old. Daniels, who has the highest vertical jump on the team, did the job on the court, and will do so for a couple more years. A plus for the Owls was the balanced rebounding. No one man dominated under the boards. Bob Westbrook, the 67 freshman who blocked five con- secutive shots vs. Fitchburg last Novem- ber to set a school record, is still learning but should be ready next year. 70 71 VOLLEYBALL J H | 72 WSC Spikers Underway If William Morgan were alive today, he would be astonished to learn that a game he invented for middle-aged men who could no longer withstand the rigors of basketball is now one of the fastest grow- ing sports in the nation. Originally called minonette, volleyball has developed into the fast moving, team game of power volleyball. The designa- tion power volleyball came into being when national and international com- missions were formed which set up strict rules and regulations to facilitate league competition. Because of the rules, the power game requires a mastery of basic skills and an understanding of certain game strategies which aren ' t normally emphasized in recreational volleyball. Concentration, quick thinking, and con- stant movement are also required of ev- ery player. It is only fitting that Westfield Statt should have both a men ' s and a women ' : power volleyball team due to the col- lege ' s close proximity to Holyoke, the birthplace of volleyball. In fact, W.S.C. is one of only three state schools in New England that fields a men ' s varsity volley- ball team. Worcester State and Lyndon State(Vermont)are the other two schools. According to second year coach, Claude Morin, this year ' s men ' s team shows signs of improvement. I feel that this year ' s squad is more advanced than last year ' s he said. We ' ve come away from local scrim- mages and have an ambitious schedule for a state college. We have a team that can compete with any of the 21 colleges in our league, he added. At present, Morin ' s main concern is to get W.S.C. established within the league which may be expanding to as many as 50 teams. According to Morin, this is a chal- lenge because, The competition in the league is tougher and the overall quality of play has improved. Rounding out this year ' s squad are seniors loe Beaulieu, Lester Zyla, Andy Johnson, Peter Mclnerny and John Bath- elt; juniors John Arana, Jorge Mino, Dana Black, Jim Carter, and Chuck Morgan; and sophomores Andy Banas and Kevin Plunkett. 73 Gymnastics Women Show Promise By Andre Elichalt The Westfield State College Women ' s Gymnastic Team opened their 1978 season on a sour note when Northeastern University defeated Coach Bob Leclair ' s squad 108.65-102.60. Westfield started fast when Le- clair ' s team completely dominat- ed the floor exercises. First place went to Debbie Rice with a score of 7.7, 2nd place went to Cheryl Dean and a nice Decker placed third. In the vaulting competi- tion, Freshman standout Decker tied for first, while teammate Mary O ' Neil was a close second. Junior Susie Lehto placed second on the beam with a score of 6.7. This year ' s team is very youth oriented. Only two members of the team are seniors. (Laurie Drake and Cheryl Dean) Debbie Rice and Co-Captains elect Mari- anne Simone and Susie Lehto round out the class of ' 79. The majority lies with the sopho- mores who are Melanie Voter, Sue Bird, Joanne LaLiberte and Mary O ' Neil. The trio of new- comers to this year ' s team are Kathy Serpis, Sue LeBrun, and Ja- nice Decker. Coach Leclair is very pleased with his teams over-all perfor- mance so far this season. He be- lieves that the scores from the last meet are concrete signs for progress. All of last season we never broke 100 points , said Le- Clair, In our first meet we not only broke 100 points, but we scored 13 points better than last years high of 89. 74 « ; I a i i i u 75 HOCKEY 76 WSC Division III Champs! Holubowich is optimistic about the future of hockey here at State. Westfield has a lot more to offer its players, a better cur- riculum, better campus and bet- ter social life that the other state schools, the only thing we ' re lacking is a rink. When questioned about the possibility of moving up to Divi- sion II, Holubowich said he ' d be glad to if we get the kind of com- mitment we got in the beginning. All I want would be to have a better schedule, and the com- mitment that if given a few years we ' ll build the kind of team in Division II that we have now in Di vision III. Our division is a devel- opmental one, and I certainly don ' t want our fans to leave games after the first period when we ' re winning by outrageous scores, he added. I ' m not asking for more mon- ey, except we might need some for traveling. People might not realize that all we have paid for us is our practice time, and the rest we have to make up for at the gate, Holubowich stated. We don ' t worry too much about our team drawing fans, we usually have a full house, and our fans are great, Holubowich said. ■ -«v WSC Owls Hockey Champs By Scott M. Danzig It ' s quite exciting and our ob- je ctive has finally been reached, Mike Holubowich, the coach from the outset of Owl hockey history upped his overall record this season from 27-30 to 47-32 after this year ' s successful cam- paign. It ' s common knowledge that the pucksters skated to an undefeated 16-0 divisional mark, while bowing only twice for an overall record of 20-2(5-2 in Div. II play). 77 HOCKEY 78 11 .-;: ■i ■■ M 79 CROSS COUNTRY -ancaf ' j - 80 J 1 IB i •yjiLssPv j 1 Jf_1L„ fclfWm. ' : gP 81 TRACK 12 And 5 For Trackmen By Brian Pienta The men ' s varsity track team is the most successful team on campus; and it will continue to be for the next several years, said coach Jerry Gravel. This season ' s record of 12 wins and 5 losses in dual meets, and more importantly, WSC ' s win- ning of three of the last four Con- ference Championships (1974, 1975 and 1977) adequately sup- port Gravel ' s statement. Accord- ing to Gravel, the team will con- tinue to be successful because most of the team is returning with the exception of four sen- iors who participated in the mid- dle distance and distance events. Most of the team is made up of underclassmen, with a large percentage of freshmen and sophmores, he said. Some of the freshmen in particular have turned in surprising perfor- mances. While WSC may have been successful overall, the team ' s true success is the number of individ- ual performers who have quali- fied for post season competition. 82 Westfield Track Runners Place The Westfield State Track Team came up with its most posi- tive performance of the indoor season, as they placed three per- formers in the Eastern Indoor Championships held last Sunday at Southern Connecticut State College. Two Westfield State track team members achieved All New England College Division honors by finishing in the top three in their respective events. A third runner placed in the meet. Russ Bosbach, Westfield ' s ace in the jumps, came up with a school record performance of 46 ' 4V2 to take third place in the triple jump. Also receiving hon- ors in the meet was Bruce La- bonte, who raced to a third place finish with a personal best of 1:15.2 in the 600 yd. run. Quarter miler Pete Davenport also scored a personal best with a fifth-place, 51.9 performance. Making it to the finals, but fail- ing to place for Westfield were Joe Mandile in the shot put and Ron Lake in the 880. Mandile ' s throw of 47 ' 8 established a new school record for the event. This weekend Westfield will travel to Hartford University for the New England Indoor Cham- pionships. Qualifying for the meet and competing on Sunday will be Russ Bosbach in the triple jump and Luis Pizzaro in the high hurdles. 83 BASEBALL « -- T ! -- T 84 BASKETBALL li at. 7 ' 86 87 LA CROSSE 8a 89 WATER POLO M|HanKHM| ■H ■ r. Like puzzle pieces separated from its entirety ... its whole. We once were integral parts of another complex puzzle But we separated, parted and disconnected to reach our forseeable goals. It wasn ' t long before we made attachments to others Then, together, we were brought closer by someone ' s magical and delicate hands. We were shaped, placed and connected intimately involved. Now we ' ve reached our goals, obtained what we needed, now it ' s time to break joined hands. Can we? Will we? Ever really leave behind this past? To move on? Create our destiny? Show what we ' ve truly learned? No. We ' ll never separate ourselves or disconnect the friendships. We ' ll remain together, close and connected through our thoughts, our love, our concern. by Andrea Hauser TWi ■ Jtf - i V i M ' wn Donald Adams George Adams Maureen Ahern Luann Alphonse Beverly Anas Frederick Avery Diana (David) Babbitt Cheryl Baker Walter Ballard Deborah Barry John Bartels Lauri Barton John Bathelt Ann Bean Gary Buard Joan Beauchemin Joseph Beaulieu Thomas Barnes Andrea Baxter Susan Beaulieu 110 Diane Bedrosian Stephen Belch Cynthia Bello Eilleen Bello Robert Benn Diane Bentley f : rxr.. v.M 1 1 |J - ■ i M A.
