The 1971 Senior Faculty Tea scheduled as tradition at Westfield was held . . . : B Yet sombre faces indicated heavy thoughts and memories that drifted over the mountains of memory from four years of yesterdays. β’ ; The Saturday before . . . Graduation June 13, 1971 Presidential Interview President Leonard J. Savignano QUESTION: What changes of major importance have occurred at Westfield since the Class of ' 71 entered as freshmen? PRES. SAVIGNANO: I think there have been many important changes. They fall into two rather specific areas of growth: one is academic, and the other is physical. In the academic area, as you know, we have now new majors in many of the liberal arts, a new major in physical education, a new major in art, a new major in music and a new major in general studies. These will give a greater oppor- tunity for academic variety and will provide for the skills which come to our campus with our students. We are away from the narrow, re- strictive courses of the past. The second major change, of course, has been the new buildings. Education today is very complex. It does re- quire specialized rooms, specialized equipment, and specialized facil- ities. The advent of the new Ely Library and Student Union and the new science building will provide our students with A -Number One facilities to their studying. As you know, the dormitories have given us more opportunities for on-campus living for students, and on- campus living is a major portion of education. QUESTION: While the enrollment figures on college campuses increase each year, how do you view the quality of education here and in our nation? PRES. SAVIGNANO: I don ' t know that I can substantiate this statement with research on the subject, but it seems to me that we have two extremes which accompanied the numerical growth. We have on our campus, as well as other campuses, some of the most capable, dedicated and outstanding students I have met in my twenty-five-plus years of education. These young people are far surpassing, or at least equal in any way, the students that I have encountered prior to coming to Westfield. On the other hand, there is also an extreme at the lower level, a group of students who do not seem to have any direction. They do not seem to have any desire and have been failing in numbers. This is not to say that these young people don ' t have ability. They certainly had all the requirements to enter our college, but somewhere along the line the motivation which is required for continuation and graduation from college was lacking. Whether this reflects world conditions or their own personal situation, I really don ' t know. QUESTION: What will be the effects of the Secondary Education Department ' s new accreditation for Westfield graduates entering the field of education or graduate school? PRES. SA VIGNANO: Of course, this is one of the fine things that has happened to Westfield College during your stay. We now have 168 full accreditation for the Secondary Education Department. This is a mark of excellence and a mark of academic accomplishment. As a result, our people can match strides, can match background, and can match preparation with any candidate for secondary employment. This is true also when it comes to an application for graduate school. A college which lacks the accreditation that we have finds that its students are not as welcome, not as respected, and there is a definite hardship. This is one single, very important plus-factor in favor of our students and our college. QUESTION: If the trend today in education is toward the liberal arts, how will this trend influence teacher-training programs? PRES. SA VIGNANO: There is a tendency perhaps to indicate or to lump all teacher preparation into one category, and that ' s liberal arts. I just don ' t happen to believe this is the trend For secondary - school teachers and Community Colleges teacher preparation there is a very definite need for liberal arts training. The preparation of teachers for the elementary level does require special teacher edu- cation. It is not as dependent on a liberal arts background as is the preparation for secondary teachers. Therefore, our plan has been to give a wider liberal arts background for our secondary teachers. We have done that, and we have gained accreditation in all our areas. QUESTION: The Bureau of Labor Statistics show that between 1968-80 there will be 4.2 million teachers to fill 2.4 million teaching positions. What are the implications of these statistics for Westfield graduates entering the teaching field each year? PRES. SA VIGNANO: In my opinion, this will have a very definite effect on our graduates. However, the picture isn ' t quite what the figures would reveal. For example, there are overages in certain areas. There are, and will continue to be, definite shortages in specific and specialized areas of education. For example, it is dif- ficult to find the number of properly trained nursery and kindergarten teachers which are required in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts alone. Teachers for the handicapped β that is, the physically handi- capped, the mentally retarded, the emotionally disturbed β are at a premium. It is almost impossible to hire these people. There is a great shortage in music supervisors. Girls ' physical education teachers are very much at a premium. They are scarce, and very few people are entering that field. It means this β that to be employed you have to be a good student with proper preparation. It means that as the students do prepare for teaching they must find the areas in which there are shortages. There are many shortages. This has been the motivating factor in the changing and adding of new majors for Westfield State College. We know what the shortages are going to be, and we are trying to prepare teachers so that they will gain employment and will not join the group of unemployed. Even more important, they will contribute to the education of the young people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
