Like all in coming Freshmen, we were apprehensive about what was ahead and, to make matters worse, the new dorms were not finished. This situation was solved by temporarily lodging the boys in the gymnasium and squeezing the girls into any possible space in Scanlon, including the recreation room. Just when it seemed that everyone had settled down and was making the best of the situation, we moved into the new dorms, Dickinson and Davis Halls. To lead us through that first year we chose as officers: Charles Tetreault, President; Mary Anne Mekalian, Vice-President; William M. O ' Brien, Treasurer; and, Angela King, Secretary. We were also pleased to learn that Mr. Edgar Alward and Mr. John Kurty were to be our faculty advisors. Finally, we managed to survive Freshman year, biology and all; and the Class of 1970 celebrated at the Freshman Ball where Suellen Aiken was chosen queen. 1 RF U ' irr r JT [• f[ , .jjgjj Ik. r - In our Sophomore year, we became counselors to the new Freshmen and also acquired a new sense of belonging. Socially, this was a very good year with Playboy Night especially standing out in our memory. This was also the year that Jerry Gorrasi was instru- mental in setting up the highly successful coffee houses which were held in Bates Cafe. In addition, Jane Banas, a member of the class of 1970, was crowned the first Homecoming Queen. In our Sophomore year, our officers were: Patricia Kelly, President; Mary Anne Mekalian, Vice-Presi- dent; Judi McNeil, Treasurer; and, Jacqueline Bouley, Secretary. The highlight of our Junior year was Your Moth- er ' s Garter which was held at the Red Barn. In addition , we also participated in the Annual Cleanup Day. Again a member of the Class of 1970, Chris Shannon, was chosen as Homecoming Queen. In our Junior year, officers were: Matthew Meagher, President; Mary Anne Mekalian, Vice-Presi- dent; Kathy Twohig, Treasurer; and, Kathleen Farrell, Secretary. This past year, our Senior year, was perhaps the best. We helped to support the successful Harvest Weekend and again our class supplied the queen. This time it was Cheryl Normandin. The Senior class also sponsored a very enjoyable trip to Bermuda. Possibly the best part of Senior year came towards the end. We were the first class to have a 200 Days Party. That was followed by a 100 Days Party at which Kathy Twohig announced the class superlatives; and, of course, there was the 70 Days Party. All were held at the C.I. The officers chosen to lead us in our most crucial year wer e: Ronald Barnes, President; Mary Anne Mekalian, Vice-President, Jacqueline Bouley, Trea- surer; and, Kathleen Farrell, Secretary. HUNDRED DAYS PARTY 10 SENIOR— PARENTS DAY In commemoration of four years of unselfish assistance and guidance to us, we the members of the class of 1970, dedicate the 1970 Tekoa to Edgar C. Alward. The very end of our year was highlighted by the Traditional Senior Week. This included a Senior— Faculty Golf Tournament, of which Gar- ry Gagne was the winner, and this was followed by a Spectator Cocktail Hour. Next on the agenda was the Clambake held in Brzoska Grove in Southwick; the Red Sox Game in Boston; and, a pool party at the Sheraton Inn. All in all, the Class of 1970 has had a very productive as well as enjoyable four years here at Westfield State College. We are leaving, but the memories will linger on. n % ,:-:•-« ■. i 12 c 13 SENIOR— FACULTY TEA 14 15 Ut£= AWARDS BANQUET EUGENIA SGOUROS PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR 17 BACCALAUREATE 18 20 CONGRESSMAN FORD RECEIVES HONORARY DEGREE • - • I i i - • 21 t r ri r 23 24 26 SS3S S£7 9 Jibe ' 4 rn rrverice ?rLe ' ri (OzceTC ' CAeA y 7%e tyie c7 zS Za e ' ( 2c 7ceae jLn 7, - .97 ? v.-m?? . 27 ADMINISTRATION President Leonard J. Savignano came to WSC in 1961 when the only major offered was elementary education. Since that time, the college has grown both in student number and land area. Dickinson Hall, Davis Hall, and Juniper Park have been built and our science building and student union are, at the time of this publication, under construction. Presi- dent Savignano has also set up a student exchange program with the University of Oklahoma, a foreign study program in Mexico, and a student teaching program which allows students to student teach in either Italy or South America. 28 29 ; v V William E. The actual meaning of the three letters can be best explained by the functions of the organization. The A G G has proven itself to be one of the most active and successful organizations on campus; it presently enrolls over 200 active members. The A G G Booster Club is a state wide organization. It was started in 1965 at a women ' s college in New Hampshire. Mr. Kenneth Magarian, Mr. John Bebas and Mr. Dan Gurrette formed the A G G to foster spirit at the apathetic girls school. It was not long after its conception that the entire campus of the school was turned into one big booster club with one purpose — school spirit. A year later the A G G took roots at Northern Essex College in Haverhill. Again the A G G was a success in its every undertaking. It was here that the A G G had its first Blow-Out. While in Haverhill the A G G members acted as prefects at a boys school, still fostering the A G G spirit. In the fall of 1968 the A G G extended its bounds to Westfield State College via Ken Magarian and John Bebas. The spirit took hold and the second week on campus A G G held a torch light soccer rally. After that a Halloween march announced the official arrival of the A G G Booster Club at Westfield State College. The A G G has donated of its time and funds freely in the support of athletics and other service organizations on campus. The A G G has raised its own funds through its many successful endeavors here on and off campus. It may be interesting to note that the A G G is totally independent from college control for its funds and functions. The A G G Booster Club is headed by a team of dedicated members guided by Ken Magarian as President, John Bebas as Vice-President, Ellen Baxter Secretary, Linda LaCouture Assistant Secretary, Perry Davis Treasurer, Jerry Rossi Assistant Treasurer, and Bill F. O ' Brien Publicity Director. The A G G advisory staff is headed by the very able coach of the Owls Basketball team Mr. Leo LeBlanc. This is the A G G! ' s major project for the academic year was a field day for the retarded children in Westfield at Stanley Park. Officers are: Angela King — President; Robert Johnson — Vice President; Diane Moge — Secretary; Peter Cross — Treasurer; Margie Dezieck — Program Chairman; Edmond Skinski — Advisor. LITERARY CLUB The purpose of the Liter- ary Club is to publish West- field State College ' s own liter- ary magazine, The Hammer and the Nail. All students on campus are welcome to con- tribute to The Hammer and the Nail ; the best of these poems, photographs, short stories, and art works are se- lected for publication by the staff. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB The International Relations Club attempts to in-i volve the student community more in the world affairs of the day. Through the various activities — opinion polls, speakers, and debates which it offers the student body, the I.R.C. widens the interest scope of the college. Each year in addition to these activ- ities, the members of the I.R.C. send a delegation to the National Model United Nations in New York City. Past participation in this event has brought much success to the Westfield delegation. The only requirement for membership in the I.R.C. is a sincere desire to become better educated as to world problems and to be willing to spread this knowledge to fellow students. Members: William Quinn — President; Marie Con- way - Secretary; Barbara Hartman — Treasurer; William Gustafson, Debbie Hastings, Paul Julian, Jim Dunn, Delphine McDonough, Jim Manning, Mary Lou Pyra, Terry St. Jean, and Sandra Geoffrey. STUDENT GOVT. The main purpose of Student Government is to act as a co-ordinating body between students and faculty and administration. This year ' s Student Government attempted to gain total involvement on the part of the students. There were rallies and even a nonviolent march, an exciting meeting with the trustees, the Annual Awards Banquet and the finale — Student Government Ball. 105 106 PSYCHOLOGY CLUB Throughout the school year the Psychology Club offers work with juveniles through the Youth Service Board, and monthly visits to Northampton State Hospital. The Eastern United States Psychological Convention is attended each spring by the most long-standing members. Films and speakers are also presented. 107 STUDENT GOVERNMENT BALL ' ' o I ' n 108 110 w§ m . . . Preserve your memories; They ' re all that ' s left you . 216 The 1970 Tekoa is now completed. This would never have been possible if it weren ' t for the assistance of many hard working people. I would like to thank Mr. Alward, our advisor, who helped us in every way possible: Paul Griffin who spent more time taking pictures for us than attending classes: Paula Salvia, our designer: Betsy Neary the Senior editor: Carol Caesar, editor of clubs and organizations; and Jacki Bouley who took charge of the faculty pictures. Gratitude also goes to the layout staff: Nancy Niquette, Daune Daley, Marcia Buraczenski, and Diane Jackson; and to the clerical help, especially Barbara Macken, Carol Dubrawski, Cecia Pilla, and all the girls in Dickinson B-lounge. But the most gratitude goes to Nancy Yarmac, my assistant editor, who at the last minute replaced my co-editor and did all the work she would have done. Thank you all once again. fkjVt UTKs Marion Cutting Editor-in-Chief 217 congratulations best wishes Caesar ' s Landscaping, Inc. 10 Gulf Road Dalton, Mass. fh l f ahi Jnfernoiinc. 1068 RIVERDALE ST., ROUTE 5 WEST SPRINGFIELD, MASS., 01089 218
