WEATHER VANE 1987 WESTFIELD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY VOLUME 66 Remember that the future is neither ours nor wholly not ours, so that we may neither count on it as sure to come nor abandon hope of it as certain not to be. — Epicurus There is no death! The stars go down to rise upon some other shore, and bright in Heaven's jewelled crown they shine forevermore. — McCrury I don't want to perish like a fading horse; youth's like diamonds in the sun and diamonds are forever. — Alphaville Man is his own star, and the soul that can render an honest and a perfect man commands all light, all influence, all fate. Nothing to him falls early, or too late. Our acts our angels, or good or ill, our fatal shadows that walk by us still. — Fletcher 12 If it weren't for the dark days, we wouldn't know what it is to walk in the light. Earl Campbell In arguing of the shadow, we forego the substance. — Zily 15 16 1987 WEATHER VANE STAFF Tri-editors: Mona Bashar, Gregg Cruger, Jennifer Taylor Advisor: Mrs. Kathleen Moriarty Editorial Staff: Faculty: Bela Bashar, Janet Hoesly Extracurricular: John Love, Megan Me Carthy, Jen Saunders Underclass: Pei Ran Ho, Warren Nakatani, Susie Sanislow Sports: Chris Moran, Brennan Smith School Life: Chip Asbury, David Fisher Seniors: Laura Bilodeau, Julie Wilson Business: Deja Littrel Staff: Rob Diemer, Mary Hoblitzell, Dave Kelly, Pnina Miller, Abbie Schnitzer, Crys Suiter. SHINING IN THE SHADOW In June 1986, the Weather Vane staff selected the theme for this yearbook. It was our intent to select a theme that would be both representative of and relevant to the student body's experience at Westfield High School. We hope that our theme, shining in the shadow, accomplishes our intention. To us, the phrase shining in the shadows seems to characterize the student body at WHS. The shining in the phrase represents the uniqueness that each student at Westfield High School possesses. Whether it be the arts, athletics, or academics, we each have our individual strengths that enable us to stand out from the shadows. These shadows may represent the problems of adole-sence or the uncertainity of the future, but whatever they represent, the students at Westfield High School have the capability to look beyond these shadows and continue to shine. THE FOUNDATION i — The Foundation is a new organization established this year at Westfield High School dedicated to the questions of human existance (i.e. virtually anything and everything). The club consists of members who read a chosen work of a philosophic nature who then come together in a group format to discuss the piece. The purpose of the club is the enhancement of the individual's awareness to the human condition. This may sound ambitious, but it is done simply through the study of short essays followed by the creation of a forum for discussion in which individuals are able to learn from the insights of their fellow students. Various philosophers have been read by the club throughout the year ranging from Sartre to Jung. The club is open to all schools of thought for it is through variation along with depth of study that understanding can result. The success of The Foundation has been from the dedication of its members to the purpose of learning in order to enhance awareness and understanding. RADICAL ROCK REACTIONARIES The Radical Rock Reactionaries is a club for students to increase the awareness of other genres of music besides Top 40. The club was founded in the spring of 1985 by Gil Margulis with the help of advisor Mr. Robert Bruno. The club attempts to bring”underground” music to the surface and tell the students of WHS that there are other types of music. This is done in two ways. The first way is to show free movies to the students. Some titles include “Rock'n Roll High School”, “The Kids are Alright” and Rude Boy.” The second and most important way is to sponsor concerts at the high school which include local talents. Some groups that played include Sophosto Funk, The Unemployed, The Leisure Set, The Fundamentals, Lord John, D.U.H., and Whirling Dervishes. We had a successful concert on December 12 which included Nervous Nerds, The Outcrowd, and Children in Adult Jails. The concert was the first of the year to have tickets sold at the door. Thanks to Dr. Drummond for being our club advisor. Have a Real Cool Time and see you on Shakin' Street, and, of course, kick out THE JAMS!!! Oran Margulis Club Member P.S. Special thanks to Gil Margulis for his spiritual guidance, Tom Pryor, Matt Doherty, Phil Linden, Dave Urbano, Victor Camponile, Tom O'Hara, Julie Choi, and other club members who helped out. MATH LEAGUE Math League members meet once a month to take a six-problem contest, which takes about a half an hour. The tests are then scored, with one point given per correct answer. The top five scores are added to Westfield's compiled score after each contest, and Westfield is ranked against other schools. Every year, Westfield has been one of the top scorers in both the county and the state. SCIENCE FICTION CLUB The Science Fiction Club is a group of people interested in saving science fiction in all of its forms. They usually watch films and discuss them. They are a distinguished group: smart, bright, and intelligent. May the force be with all that believe in the Science Fiction Club. May all new forms of life have the force behing them. Good luck all . . . PING PONG CLUB Under advisor Mr. Zimmer, the Ping Pong Club meets twice a month. President Mike Shenoy sets up tournaments between club members and there is also a club ladder where players are ranked and can challenge others above them. There is doubles play, and even though competition is fierce, everyone has a good time. ITALIAN CLUB Santa Lucia with Rob Del Guidice and his group . . . La Festa Natalizia, il nostro Babbo Natale Todd Kaul . . . Tombola e Baci Perugina ... La Serata Italiana ed il ballo folclorico . . . Let's listen to Un Bel Di . . . Many talented sophomores, juniors, and seniors continued the Art Club’s tradition of creative fund raisers such as decorated Halloween pumpkins and handmade cupid's arrows delivered to students from their Valentines on St. Valentine's Day. During its annual Christmas ornament and bake sale, the club raised the second highest amount in its history and is hoping to better its funds next year. The funds raised by the Club go towards sponsoring art related trips and activities during the year. This year, as always, the event proved to be very popular. The Latin Club has recently become involved in community projects. The club used the money it earned from Back to School Night to buy food for the needy. The food was distributed to needy citizens at the Westfield Temple and Holy Trinity Church. The club also continued to fund a child in Egypt using the money earned through candy sales. This year's presidents are Neil Troum and Kim Gosen. The vice president is Mindy Waterhouse. The choirs sing a vertible cornucopia of musical selections. Mr. Beil and Mr. Mathews share the difficult yet rewarding task of directing the groups. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY During the course of the school year, the members of the National Honor Society, who were selected for their demonstration of scholarship, leadership, service and character, helped finance scholarships for outstanding students. Some of these activities included recycling in town and the annual flea market. The club provided a forum for learning about the following issues: the plight of Soviet dissidents, the Contras in Nicaragua, abortion, nuclear arms, and the American Indian. In addition, volunteers participated in the soup kitchen in Newark for the third year in a row. One of the highlights of the club's year was a visit by the new Superintendent, Dr. Smith, who came to speak to us about his vision for education and the high school in particular. We look forward to providing future opportunities to explore issues of social concern for the student body. 81 ASIAN AWARENESS CLUB The Asian Awareness Club . . . This year was the experimental foundation for future ideas, activities and awareness. Positive ideas and activities were brought up and future years will see to the development of these ideas. Founders Horace Jen and Michael Hsu are hopeful that future years will carry on the paths that have been cleared. 82 S.A.D.D. This year saw the active emergence of the new students against drunk driving chapter at Westfield High School. The group was founded by Tracy Mencher and Lisa Kolton. The purpose of the group is to increase student awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, as was seen by the ever-present posters. 'Safe rides was another new service offered to WHS students. The club offered safe rides home to students who chose S.A.D.D.'s volunteers to drive in place of driving under the influence. The S.A.D.D. chapter helped to make the school year a safe one. BILLIARDS CLUB As a result of last year's success, the Billiards Club welcomed many new members this fall. In its second year, the club has expanded quickly. Buy It: The infamous Rainbow Lunch needs no introduction. There is the traditional hoofing it, better known as (ugh!) walking. For a few industrious students, the preferred method is sidewalk surfing, or skateboarding. The bicycle racks are jam-packed on most days, as are the mopeds and motorcycle parking areas. The passage of the recent bond issue called for construction of a 7-runway airport with a fully equipped control tower and multi-level terminal. Thus, future WHS students will be able to fly to school. Ultralight aircraft and helicopter ports are also in the plans. Until then, the automobile will have to suffice; whether it is an old clunker or a 1987 Porsche 959 188 AT WHS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY CUT ALONG DOTTED LINE WESTFIELD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ADMIT SLIP STUDENT: DATE GRADE: 10 11 12 HOMEROOM: NO NOTE: You must serve an afternoon detention on M T W R F___ ____ ___in Room 104. FASHION The 1986-87 school year saw many great advances in the creative genre that is fashion. Footwear such as Docksiders and Reeboks were around but L.L. Bean's Maine Hunting Boots, otherwise known as Duck Shoes, made a big comeback after a few slow years. The style in pants was definitely pleated and tapered. Also, cut-off sweats with WHS boxers hanging out were the rage for gym class. For girls (most of the time anyway) tapered skirts, miniskirts, ribbed skirts, and the ever-popular denim skirts could usually be seen shuffling down the hallways. College sweatshirts ranging from Azusa Pacific U. to Yakima Community College (there are no colleges beginning with Z ) worn over turtlenecks or knit shirts came out in droves this year. In the area of outerwear, long, dark over-coats were a must have. Even better were jean-jackets, especially those with wild artwork on the back. Some accessories for the well dressed student were bows, for girls, and scarves for both sexes. In the final analysis, fashion at WHS has improved. Fieldhouse: We were homeless, all our games were played $way. The question remains — is graduation going to be away too? In Hoboken perhaps? Or maybe in Peapack? Attendance: A death in the family (B-3 under the new policy) was CHARGEABLE, yet going on a field trip to math day” or the Great Swamp was not. And another thing: some abscences were EXCUSED and CHARGEABLE'', some UNEXCUSED and CHARGEABLE”, but what happened to the LOOK, I didn't FEEL like COMING TO SCHOOL today” category? Hall Monitors: Apparently, the administration felt that students are not responsible enough to go to the bathroom, go to their locker, go to the library, or to speak to one another without the expressed written consent of their par- WORLD NATIONAL: It was an eventful year, filled with thought-provoking, emotional occurences. A few of the headlines that caught our attention were: the space-shuttle Challenger tragedy, the bombing of Libya, the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Iceland, the overthrowing of the Marcos regime by Cor-azon Aquino, the Iran-Contra connection (Iranigate), and many more. At home in America were the Howard Beach racial attacks, the Baby “M surrogate mother trial, and of course the return of red M M's. ents and grandparents, all of their teachers, Dr. Petix, the (invisible) lunch teacher, Buddha, the Prince of Wales, Ronald Reagan, and Helen Keller. REVIEW MUSIC: 1986 was a great year for music. Top names of the year were: Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood, Billy Joel, Bon-Jovi, the Talking Heads, the Police, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Janet Jackson, the Smithereens, REM, Eric Clapton, and many others. Music has become so much a part of student life that a jukebox was established for students to listen to during their lunch periods. Benefit concerts following in the footsteps of Live Aid have also been popular. The Crackdown Concert in New York City, the Amnesty International Concerts, and the Sun City Anti-Apartheid album made music news during the past year. It was, well, to say the least, a great year in sports. Our favorite underdogs, the New York Mets, were awesome. They went all the way this year and became the 1986 World Champions. Likewise, the New Jersey (or New York, depending on where you live) Giants won the Superbowl. In addition, Dennis Conner with his crew on the Stars and Stripes brought the America's Cup back to the U.S. Closer to home, the 1986 Lacrosse and boys’ soccer teams both won state championships in their respective divisions. The football team also had its best season in several years. The boys' indoor track team captured the State Championships while both the girls' and boys' swim teams won the Union County Championships and the girls' team went on to become state champs.
