To millions of immigrants the sight of the Statue of Liberty was, and is, a deeply moving experience because it repre- sents man's long cherished dream of freedom. In this tow- ering symbol, immigrants see their own future - a future of opportunity, equality, lack of oppression, and fulfillment. In a sense, we too are immi- grants, embarking on an un- certain and challenging future with much the same hope and strong sense of optimism. May this symbol of our heri- tage of freedom inspire us even as it has, and will, inspire all those who migrate to our shores. To enlarge upon and en- hance this year's theme, the Weather Vane Staff asked various well known persons in different walks of life, as well as our own faculty and stu- dents, to comment on what the Statue of Liberty means to them, Excerpts from these re- sponses are included in this yearbook. 1986 weather vane staff co-editors: advisor: editorial staff: introduction: faculty: extracurricular: underclass: sports: school life: i vrM r conclusion business: art: staff: contributors: laura parnes jen lauraj±Jif6c1feau davla kelly david fisher greg ertjg . adorn kolton amy kaminstein sulanne pollack ona bashar kevin mccauley john love robert diemer michele larosa abbie schnitzer rachel tucker andy kelley matt daley gil margulis jeff nelson john kieltyka bill garbarini jyl skolnick Chris moran deja littrell marnee hall amy kaminstein maureen weiss david gutterman para ambardar mary hoblitzell janet hoesly sarah kreisman sanislow mavann bekkedahl T TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION FACULTY ...... I ORCHESTRA The WHS orchestra began its year with the return of conductor Joseph Ragno, Their first concert, which took place in December, vas a great success, due to the hard work and determination of fs members. The orchestra successfully executed and performed pieces hroughout the year. 71 FILM CLUB The Film-making club provides an opportuni- ty for students interested in all aspects of pro- duction, from writing, acting and directing to the technical areas of filming, editing, and special effects. Saturday Science seeks to promote excellence in the many fields of science and to present discussion- seminars that can be understood and appreciated by stu- dents with a wide range of interests and scientific apti- tudes. Saturday Science seeks speakers on issues that are current and provides students the opportunity to discuss careers with working scientists from industry, research insti- tutes, and universities. Professional scientists lecture - and discuss their own areas of expertise. Topics ranged from Halley's Comet to Genetics. Field trips in the spring of the year take students to places of scientific interest. Last year the group visited the Franklin Institute, the Rodin Museum, and the Philadelphia Art Museum on one beautiful spring day and then went on the annual trip to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Each meeting starts with gen- erous amounts of fresh cider and doughnuts. 81 SCIENCE FICTION CLUB The Science Fiction Club is a group of people interested in saving science fiction in all of its forms. We usually watch films and have discussions on the film. We are a distinguished group, smart, bright, and intelligent. 1) Ghost Busters- shoot them down . , down .. down 2) Star Trek - beam me up Scotty ., . I'm giving it full power, Captain. Students select countries to represent, then conduct research on selected issues in order to accurately represent their coun- tries at the Model U.N. simulation. 83 YOUNG LEFTISTS The Young Leftists are a liberal group of WHS students dedicat- ed to presenting their viewpoint on all social and political issues. Its objectives are to raise the level of student consciousness on important current issues and to encourage students to make decisions about their society based on individual choice. Activi- ties include open seminars on Nuclear Weapons, Student Rights, Capitol Punishment, South Africa (apartheid), and Latin America. The club also sponsored workshops on Human Rights, Internation- al Relations and a school debate on Arms Control. The club devoted time to working at soup kitchens in Newark and Plain- field, NJ. They also attended an Anti-Apartheid March in Newark. RADICAL ROCK Th© Radical Rock Reactionaries was formed last spring by Gil Margulis ('86) and with the help of Mr. Bob Bruno, our benevolent advisor. It was formed in order to increase the awareness of alternative styles and forms of music. There is a wide variety of music out, however, commercial FM radio will not play most of it because it is not commercial enough. The club attempts to bring this underground music to the surface and attention of the students at WHS through a wide variety of programs and activities for the student at school. The Radical Rock Reactionaries have an ongoing series of movies that are available to the students. Titles have in- cluded Rock 'n Roll High School and Tommy . In addi- tion, the club has sponsored talks by various local musical experts. Speakers invited to address club meetings have included members of Whirling Dervishes, Animation, and Lenny Pugliese who played guitar with the Four Seasons, Most importantly, the Radical Rock Reactionaries have sponsored concerts in the high school in order to give local talent an opportunity to perform, which was needed due to the lack of opportunities presented by the ineffective Student Council, Last May's coffeehouse featured the music of The Leisure Set, Wavelength, and The Fundamentals, On November 15th, the highly successful Armaggedon Gig was held in conjunction with the Young Leftists. That coupled with the fact that early season illness took two other varsity starters out contributed to the 0-4 start. After that, however, they won the next five matches to have a 5-4 record. In match 10 vs. Union Cathlic they lost 3-4 even though they bowled their best series of the year. During the past year an ugly rash of terrorist attacks struck fear in the hearts of the American people. The Achille Lauro; TWA Flight 847. an Egyptian airliner; the airports in Rome and Vienna—these P.L.O. raids took the lives of many innocent people. Americans now had to think twice be- fore leaving home and the paranoia of being trapped in America spread. Terrorism was not, however, the sofe source of trouble in the past year. The unrest in South Africa grew to previ- ously unheard of proportions as the white minority continued to oppress the black majority. Despite recent American economic sanctions and world-wide calls for liberation, it seems that any ultimate conclusion will be proceeded by bloody revolution. UNREST IN THE PHILIPINES AND HAITI Political unrest has also reached the shores of Haiti and the Philippines. Jean-Claude Baby Doc Duvalier was ousted as Haitian President and was replaced by a pro-American military regime. In the Philippines President (Dictator) for life Ferdinand Marcos won a highly controversial election over challenger Corazon Aquino. Re- ports of ballot-stuffing, bribery, regis- tration fraud and a host of other illegal voting activities tainted the election and caused Mrs. Aquino to declare her plans to seize power despite her loss. TRAGEDIES The past year also was the victim of many unfortunate tragedies. In Mexico an earthquake left 5,000 dead and 150,000 homeless. A volcano in Colum- bia killed 20,000 and left the country under layers of mud and ash, 256 ma- rines died when their ill-fated plane crashed in New Foundland. The most devastintg tragedy was the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger one minute after takeoff, resulting in the death of all seven aboard, including teacher Christa McAuliffe. It plunged the nation into mourning and reminded everyone of the danger involved in exploring the last frontier. FAVORITE TV SHOWS The Cosby Show Family Ties Miami Vice Cheers The A Team $t. Elsewhere Hill Street Blues Late Night with David Letterman General Hospital Dallas YEAR OF HOPE Despite all of the ugliness and trage- dy in the news, the past year has also had its promising moments. The fire- side chats in Geneva between Presi- dent Reagan and Premier Mikhail Gor- bachev left the promise of some future summit meetings, and eased some tensions between the super powers. The release of Anatoly Shcharansky, prisoner of conscience, left the hope that the Soviet Union was entering a new era of social relations. YEAR OF AID Socially, the past year was the year of aid. Millions of dollars were raised for the starving people in Ethiopia, the farmers of midwestern America and other needy causes. On July 13, 1985 millions of people across the globe turned their attention to LiveAid, as or- ganized by Bob Geldof. Artists per- formed in both London and Philadel- phia to raise 70.5 million dollars for Africa's hungry. John Cougar Mellen- camp and Willie Nelson led FarmAid, raising money for American farmers. United Artists against Apartheid re- corded an album to raise money against South Africa's segratory gov- ernment. Last May, thousands of peo- ple came together as Hands Across America began its journey to raise money for the hungry. All in all, the past year was one of giving and should be remembered for all those who were helped by the efforts of those special individuals who understood the impor- tance of giving. The past year was also scarred by another kind of giving: AIDS. The dead- ly disease has spread throughout America and the world, baffling doc- tors as a cure has yet to be found. While scientists could not find a cure for AIDS, breakthroughs were made in the development of the artificial heart and recombinant DNA. And much ex- citement surrounded the rare visit of Halley's Comet. While the subway series was not to be, the 1-95 Series” was, and it saw the Kansas City Royals embarrass the St. Louis Cardi- nals. The Mets and Yankees did have respectable second place finishes, though. Dwight Gooden claimed the Cy Young award and Don Mattingly raked in the MVP. The football season was totally dom- inated by the Chicago Bears who did the Super Bowl Shuffle all over New England's Patriots. Walter Payton sur- passed Jim Brown to set a new NFL rushing record and William the Refrig- erator” Perry gave new meaning to cubic capacity. In basketball Kareem Abdul Jabbar broke Wilt Chamberlin's all-time scor- ing record and led the Lakers to anoth- er NBA title. The League saw a host of promising rookies including New York Knick sensation Patrick Ewing and 77” Washington Bullet Manute Bof. In men's tennis John McEnroe and Ivan Lendel had to fight hard to fend off new-comer, Boris Becker, who did manage to win Wimbledon. Women's tennis was again dominated by Mar- tina Navratalova, but Hana Mandli- kova was able to win the U.S. Open. In hockey the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup—again! Each year, with neither financial assistance nor academics recognition, a mere handful of dedicated students finance, design and publish a very superior yearbook. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all art is created equal, that it is endowed by its creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are the freedom from censure and change .... Therefore, We, the People of Westfield High, in order to form a more perfect outlet of expression, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common intent, promote the general creative spirit, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Literary Magazine for the Students of Westfield High School. A potential that exists within each and every one of us. A potential which Westfield High has tried to bring out of us. We came here as sophomores, free to learn, to grow and to see our potential. Our years here have aided our search for the values we must make our own in order to fulfill our potential. As we walk through these doors for the last time as students, let us not forget our opportunity to establish our own goals, and the freedom we have to pursue them. Let us kindle the torch of our potential and strive to keep the flame alive. J| WESTFIELD MEMORIAL LIBRARY 3 9550 00188 0532
