The passage from adolescence to adulthood marks one of the most difficult stages in a young person's life. What are often described as optimum years are actually times of insecurity, fear, and loss. How an individual reacts to these times of crises plays a vital role in his maturation. Strongly associated with this period of turmoil are challenge, expectation, and, ultimately, the joy of success. Within the walls of school, the metamorphosis occurs; slowly, steadily, through intellectual and emotional growth, the student passes on to adulthood. The first coffeehouse, inevitably, is sophomore dominated. Many of us, in our turn, have stood timidly amidst a haze of noise and confusion, searching for our friends. Others, perhaps, were preoccupied with new acquaintances and, unconsciously, our outward appearance. Adolescence is a time of insecurity; egos are easily shattered by thoughtless comments or criticisms. Self-confidence evolves slowly through acceptance and success. Friends are both influential and important parts of our lives during this period; they not only share our joy but also our pain, and they offer support when necessary.
