CO-EDITORS Melissa Rogers Nancy Siegel ADVISOR Elizabeth Coriell The passage from adolescence to adulthood marks one of the most difficult stages in a young person's life. What are often described as optimum years are actually times of insecurity, fear, and loss. How an individual reacts to these times of crises plays a vital role in his maturation. Strongly associated with this period of turmoil are challenge, expectation, and, ultimately, the joy of success. Within the walls of school, the metamorphosis occurs; slowly, steadily, through intellectual and emotional growth, the student passes on to adulthood. The first coffeehouse, inevitably, is sophomore dominated. Many of us, in our turn, have stood timidly amidst a haze of noise and confusion, searching for our friends. Others, perhaps, were preoccupied with new acquaintances and, unconsciously, our outward appearance. Adolescence is a time of insecurity; egos are easily shattered by thoughtless comments or criticisms. Self-confidence evolves slowly through acceptance and success. Friends are both influential and important parts of our lives during this period; they not only share our joy but also our pain, and they offer support when necessary. Days are spent impatiently awaiting decisions. At home, a boy dreads the arrival of an ominous interim report. The college board in Princeton calculates a student's scholastic aptitude; a university contemplates another application. Deadlines must be met and preparations must be made. With the onset of the final semester of school, a pupil's responsibilities intensify. The despised junior research paper, AP exams, achievements and SAT's, graduation requirements and finals—all conspire to plague students. Caught in a whirlwind of anxiety and hope, days slip away. It seems like ages since the muddy trek to Cheesequake State Park, the opening pep rally and the Thanksgiving bonfire. Even the mysterious red carnation which arrived on Valentine's Day has begun to fade. Challenge, to a large extent, is self-determined. In order to be challenged, a person must first exert himself. Both the curriculum and the atmosphere of West-field High School provide a competitive edge; it is the pupil who resolves how he will respond to the demands presented before him. For one person, this might mean advanced placement and honors courses; for another, challenge might be met through involvement in extracurricular activities. Athletics, student government, clubs, and music all become essential elements of the student's growth. Likewise, Cicero translations, Oedipus thesis papers, and numerous calculus problems enable intellectual expansion for others. 10 If one accepts the challenges necessary for growth, one experiences the pain of exertion but, ultimately, the joy of accomplishment. The intensity of elation is, perhaps, inversely proportional to the risk of failure. Testing the limits of ones's attainment, extending the range of one's possibilities—these are the rewards of coming of age. C0E6TFIELD HIGH 15 A GREAT PLACE TO PARTV... BUT I WOULDN'T WANT TO 5TUDV THERE! 11 Whether it be the loss of a crucial opening football game, a futile attempt at securing a student office, or failure on a significant exam, every student experiences some form of loss in his high school years. Losing, however, often instigates the seeds of motivation and is an indispensable component of success. In order to appreciate the full extent of victory, there must first be some kind of defeat. It is only after many broken test tubes and ruined solutions that the chemistry student truly cherishes perfect results on his lab. 14 What really matters is openness, readiness, attention, courage to face risk. You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith, and hope. Captain Steve Shields, voted to first team All State by the coaches' poll, named to the first Mid-Atlantic team and voted first team Union County and first team Group IV All State by the Star Ledger, was the captain and leader throughout the season. Junior goalie Dave Zupko and senior Declan Cunningham were also given county and state recognition. In addition, John lerardi, Ed Haag, and Taylor Wright gained county recognition. The team will lose three seniors: Jim Dodd, Steve Shields, and Declan Cunningham; however, a host of experienced sophomores and juniors are returning to make up a potentially very strong team for next year. The J.V. team rolled to an 11-1 record and the sophomore team was equally successful at 5-0. Limited enrollment and a lack of experience hurt the Westfield squad. New head coach Dick Zimmer faced the difficult position and had to deal with many mounting injuries during the season. Seniors Kenny Miller and Dan Gilday led the team as co-captains of the squad. Many thanks to Robert Brewster, Ron Barner, Larry Dubiel, Wm. Mellott, and Steve Bodmer for their time and efforts. The J.V. team compiled a record of 3-4 and the sophomore team posted a record of 0-3. With sophomore and junior experience returning next year, the hopes for a brighter season look good. Upset in the State tournament, the team came back two days later to defeat the same team in the Union County finals by a score of 4-1. Although this competition was unsuccessful, a promising season lies ahead for the '84 team because of the returning players and the talent moving up from the junior varsity ranks. Coaches Shaun Cherewich and Ron Barner's enthusiasm and spirit motivated 59 men to work tirelessly in building the reputation of WHS's newest varsity team. Led by midfielders Dan Gilday and Paul Goski, defenseman Dave Lovejoy and attacker Peter Borque, the team posted an overall 11-7 record, the most wins in any season rankings; with their return, prospects run high for '84, as the future looks bright for the styx- First row L to R: J. The team finished out the year with a team batting average of .306 and a fielding percentage of .929. The team was aided by strong efforts from Nancy Kasko and Wendy Wal-bert, who were both picked to the first team of the County All-Stars. Kasko ended the season with 10 wins, 5 losses, and a save. She also pitched to a 2.91 ERA. Picked to the County Second Team were Kathy McNally and Sheri Filippone. The Junior Varsity squad was 19-1 and became Union County Champs in their first year of competition. With the experience of players in 1983, and the development of the JV team, we look forward to a highly successful 1984 campaign. Tri- captains Peter Murphy, Dave Faris and Roger Brewster led the the 1983 Boys' Baseball Team through a successful 14-11 season. Timely hitting, consistent fielding and strong pitching perfromances were a key to the team's success. The team grew stronger as the season progressed and their efforts were rewarded when they reached the Union County finals. Although they lost to Elizabeth, it was a one run contest that provided the fans with a strong display of hard fought, aggressive baseball. Their eight game winning streak boosted the team's spirit and united the squad. Individually, Roger Brewster had a fine season; he was chosen to the first team of both Union County and the Wat-chung Conference. Dan Hauck, Dean Luckenbaugh and Mike Parrish also earned positions on the All-County squad. The JV team also had success. They finished with a 16-5-1 record and advanced past the first round of the Union County Tournamnt. The experience of the many returning players should provide a stable foundation for the 1984 season. 82 BOYS' BASEBALL WHS OPPONENT 3 Summit 8 0 Piscataway 4 12 Linden 6 9 Union 8 7 Elizabeth 4 6 J.P. The team won another Watchung Conference Championship and swept the entire Union County Tournament. Three strong singles players provided experience and numerous victories and the younger doubles teams grew in experience and were also a major contributor to the success of the season. Captain Gary Shendell finished his last season at number one singles successfully despite many cumbersome injuries. Senior singles player, Allan Flowers, and Junior singles player, Ricky Bartok, were awarded state honors as was the doubles team of Carl Kumpf and Dave Smelson. First row L to R: T. Evidence of this success may be seen through new school records in the Shotput Relay, Sprint Medley, Discus Relay, and the Javelin Relay. New individual school records were set in the javelin, discus, and shotput by Noreen Morris, and in the 200m and 400m runs by Laura Halpin. The outstanding individual achievements by Noreen Morris included first place in both the Group IV State Sectionals and in the Watchung Conference for the discus. Kopelman, D. Humiston, G. Kehler, coach; B. Jeremiah, J. Dembiec Our 1984 United States Winter Olympic team was projected to be one of the best ever assembled. The quaint, industrial town of Sarajevo acted as the backdrop for the games. The heavy snows and dense fog didn't dampen the spirits and dreams of the Olympians, despite the havoc they caused ABC Sports coverage. Forty-nine nations were represented at the games with the most competitive being the Russians, the East Germans, the Norwegians, the Finns, the Americans, the Austrians, and the British. Despite a disappointing start, the Americans finally rebounded with medals in skating and skiing. Debbie Armstrong and Christin Cooper captured an unexpected gold and silver in the giant slalom, while a confident Bill Johnson shocked the world with a downhill victory. Phil and Steve Mahre monopolized the slalom event, winning gold and silver medals respectively. The Carruthers, Kitty and Peter, skated to a silver medal in the pairs' skating competition. Scott Hamilton attained his Olympic dream of winning a gold medal; in addition, Rosalynn Sumners was a silver medalist winner in ladies' figure skating. The difficult conditions, tough competition, and over-speculation by the American press were all reasons for the Americans' limited success. U.S. disappointments included the performance of the hockey team and Steve and Phil Mahres' giant slalom finishes. Unfortunately, politics entered into the scoring and cancellations of many events. The Swiss skier, Erika Hess, the Austrian downhiller, Franz Klammer, and Katrina Witt, the East German skater were all standouts going into the games. The Soviets were the outstanding hockey force, and Great Britains' Torvill and Dean captured the crowd and the gold in ice dancing. In addition, Karin Enke, the East German speed-skater dominated the competition. The East Germans and Soviets finished in the top positions in luge and bobsledding both for men and women. The spirit and support of the American partisans was evident at every event. ABC Sports presented the events and provided the viewer with a flavor of Sarajevo. Some dreams were fulfilled, many were shattered, but all nations put forth their best effort in the traditional Olympic spirit. The flame will burn again in Los Angeles giving other athletes a chance to participate in the greatest sports event of the year, the 1984 Olympics. ttUUMliUbi. itUfili Jtfx THE POWDER AND THE GLORY The thrill of victory The agony of defeat. Is it a collection of computers together plotting against people? Not quite. A computer club is a collection of students meeting together plotting against computers by programming them to do intrepid things. We also talk about computers and share our knowledge on the various computers available. Some of them are good (Apple, IBM PC), some are not (Tl, Timex Sinclair). We have demos of our varying computers. Our club is basically an information exchange system where people learn and share. Some rivalries do exist: Apple vs. IBM vs. Atari vs. Timex vs. TRS-80 vs. Cray. Almost all are satisfied with their computer or the school's Prime computer. Only one is not satisfied with his computer: Gary with his TRASH-80 . . uh . . I mean his TRS-80. At least he knows its true value. 135 Mark Adams Jennifer Ahlskog Tom Akesson Jennifer Albertson Tamara Alfandrc Marcy Allen Meena Ambardar Tracey Arther Kenneth Atlas Carlo Attanasio Laura Aubrey Matthew Azzarto David Backus Lisa Bailey Catherine Baldwin Tara Balka Lisa Banks Kim Barnes Sheila Barry Damita Bartlett Kimberly Bavos Maryann Bekkedahl Terri Belle Erik Berger Jennifer Bergin Glenn Bigbee Marcy Billingsby Sharon Bilman Scott Blackmon Judy Blanco Hmm . All of the students found themselves travelling down the Golden State Parkway towards exit 135. Munchkins lined the road, warning them of the dangers that were ahead. The students heard tales of raunchy rainbow lunches, awesome Achievements, sadistic SAT's, and, horror of horrors, the punishment for leaving the parkway during school hours! 0 nee upon a time in a little colonial town named Westfield, an unnatural phenomenon occurred. Dr. Greene cancelled school because a monstrous snowstorm had blanketed the town. The students rejoiced and snuggled back under their covers to finish their various dreams. 198 II et, the good witch informed the students that there was one redeeming feature of this terrible tale of woe. Off of the exit 135 there was a prize offered by the Wizard of WHS! Several of the students guessed at the contents of the prize. One hoped it was a brain, another thought it was a friend, while a third assured the others that it simply had to be a case of beer. The students cheered (actually several groaned), exited the parkway, and cruised on down to a party. 257 vJ ' Bam 260 swiSSCH tflCHflfLJ WSONO RAY-BAN WAYFARERS - f .sEPl CAS Of W Pfitm WCoMtlW CUfT( Vof£$oJ AfflCBfrw W HAMlCT IN MEMORIU, YESTERDAY ere have you gone to. After the first of three long years passed, we could look back and see that some of our goals were accomplished, but others were lost among our first confrontations with thesis papers and exams. We anticipated summer vacations, new friends and experiences, although the past year's satisfactions lingered. 277 Junior year sneaked up on us unexpectedly, and starting that first day when they told us, It's the toughest and most important year yet, we knew it wasn't going to be as easy as sophomore year. This was the year of the research paper, S.A.T.'s and drivers' licences. We became experts at overnight essays and cramming for exams. Surviving the junior year was a source of pride because we accomplished so much more than we ever expected possible. MOLSON GOLDEN RnitvJ Bottled in Qituuh Finally, our senior year at WHS; we've mastered the survival arts of conning teachers, avoiding SARC, exam cramming, stomaching cafeteria food, plagiarism, and cliff-noting. Senior year is the fear of applications, the joy of acceptance, the sorrow of rejection. We acknowledge that our graduation represents the abdication of our position at the top of the ladder, the resumption of our novitiate status. Yet we descend with the assurance that the hard work we have endured and the skills we have mastered will serve us well. 280 rfiig PPn , fcfck n|S §??i t £ budget print INSTANT PRINTING CENTER 232-2287 Let us put a lid on your printing budget RUSS EVANS MITCH EVANS 241 South Ave East Westfield, New Jersey 07090 (201) 233-6006 Creative (£obc Innovative Programming for Home Computers 376 Orenda Circle STEVEN L.
