All of us have known how to drive since we were kids, at least behind the wheel of a Matchbox. Other times, we'd slide over when our parents had gone in and rotate the wheel two inches in each direction before it locked, and honk and switch lanes right in the garage. In high school, the universal dream of getting a driver's license crystallizes rapidly and urgently. Time is measured in terms of lessons, successful parallel parkings, the first drive on the parkway, a permit, and finally, the much-cherished license. Everyone at Westfield High shares in this process of converting his childhood dream into a suddenly attainable reality. 11

At some indefinable point in the school year, we attain momentum; classes, homework, and the alarm clock become the most dominant influences in our lives. Inexplicably, we get caught up in our school life, and Westfield High School becomes the limit of our reality. PSAT, SAT and college applications, junk brochures bombard us through the mail and media. But if we can see beyond English theses and chemistry tests, we realize the town of Westfield has metamorphosed as well-—new store fronts—Tony Dennis, Cosimo's, Haagen-Dazs, Chez Catherine, Vivian's Kitchen—even the possible development of the Springfield Mall, red hexagons a-glare. The biggest decision used to be whether we would have to wear those clumpy red galoshes that matched our Health-tex raincoat. But we've grown since then, and more momentous decisions await us. 13
