Cat in the Hat preludes a thesis on Dostoevsky —who can say what form our growing creativity will take? Our high school years could be the time when everyone's personal specialty blooms to its fullest. After twelve years of steady development and refinement of our fortes, whether in the arts, sports or academics, we all have formed unique personalities and greatly extended our potential. As high schoolers, we are more creative and versatile, more ready to face what follows graduation than we have ever been before. 4 5 Inflation is skyrocketing, costs increasing, quality declining. The prices of new cars, homes, and college educations may soon make them inaccessible to many young adults. In addition, the rising unemployment, the highest since the depression, and a narrowing job market make the future even more uncertain. In light of these prospects, the assurance of a good high school education is more crucial than ever before. Westfield's academic standards have remained high, untouched by society's changing values. Indicative of this, Westfield High School has ten merit scholars this year and a projected eighty five percent of the senior class enrolling in colleges next fall. 6 School spirit is the celebration of our school's continued greatness. It ranges from participation in sports, cheerleading, and marching band to spectator support at sporting events. Traditionally, WHS spirit manifests itself in students' involvement in the Language Carnival, Spirit Week, the Section, coffeehouses, and varied extracurricular activities. This year a unique sign of school spirit has surfaced in the form of mohawks, a fad started by some of our football players and continued by many throughout the school. School spirit is a distinct warmth which endures—despite changing faces and fads—in the form of lasting friendships and fond remembrances. All of us have known how to drive since we were kids, at least behind the wheel of a Matchbox. Other times, we'd slide over when our parents had gone in and rotate the wheel two inches in each direction before it locked, and honk and switch lanes right in the garage. In high school, the universal dream of getting a driver's license crystallizes rapidly and urgently. Time is measured in terms of lessons, successful parallel parkings, the first drive on the parkway, a permit, and finally, the much-cherished license. Everyone at Westfield High shares in this process of converting his childhood dream into a suddenly attainable reality. 11 At some indefinable point in the school year, we attain momentum; classes, homework, and the alarm clock become the most dominant influences in our lives. Inexplicably, we get caught up in our school life, and Westfield High School becomes the limit of our reality. PSAT, SAT and college applications, junk brochures bombard us through the mail and media. But if we can see beyond English theses and chemistry tests, we realize the town of Westfield has metamorphosed as well-—new store fronts—Tony Dennis, Cosimo's, Haagen-Dazs, Chez Catherine, Vivian's Kitchen—even the possible development of the Springfield Mall, red hexagons a-glare. The biggest decision used to be whether we would have to wear those clumpy red galoshes that matched our Health-tex raincoat. But we've grown since then, and more momentous decisions await us. 13 14 15 ON TIP-TOE COMES THE GENTLE DARK TO HELP THE CHILDREN SLEEP AND SILENTLY, IN SILVER PATHS THE SLUMBER FAIRIES CREEP. THEN OVERHEAD, GOD SEES THAT ALL HIS CANDLES ARE A-LIGHT, AND REACHING LOVING ARMS TO US HE BIDS HIS WORLD GOOD NIGHT. —DOROTHY MASON PIERCE IN MEMORY OF BRIAN JACOX NOVEMBER 30, 1965-FEBRUARY 23, 1983. ADMINISTRATION 20 FACULTY COMMENTS CONCERNING PROGRESS AS IT RELATES TO WHS AND EDUCATION. . The school has improved in many aspects. There is a broader variety of course offerings, particularly in the foreign languages. For instance, semester courses, conversational courses, and different A.P. offerings have been added -Richard Konet I've seen a greater concern and commitment to the full development of our students in terms of the professional staff. I've also seen a greater assumption of responsibility by pupils.-Robert Petix There is definitely a move toward serious appreciation of study. We're coming around again, coming to a reordering of priorities, emphasizing values, growth, and learning. The students have a broadened interest in intellectual expansion.-Frank Scott Counseling at the high school level was strictly vocational, and then it became scheduling students into the right classes, and now it is personal and social counseling as wet.-Judith Glasser Westfield High School is a more exciting ploce because it offers more. It has not only the traditional offerings, but also contemporary ones.-Evelyn Maloney We now have a great deal more supplementary help In the way of the Special Services Team, which includes a psychologist, a social worker, a learning disabilities teacher, and the resource room teachers. And we also have about thirty volunteers who work in the College Resource Center. ■ Margaret Rhein________________________________________________________________________________________________ SECRETARIES Ruth Hanna Eileen Sexton Frances Newton I 1 FAREWELL . . . The Westfield school system owes its tradition of excellence to long years of service by dedicated faculty and staff. On behalf of the Westfield School, the 1983 Weather Vane would like to extend its gratitude to the following persons as they retire from their present positions: John Lay. retiring after 13 years as as Director of Phys. Ed. and Athletics, 6 years as Supervisor of boys athletics, and 12 years as Phys. Ed. and Health teacher; Gary Kehler, stepping down after 22 years as head football coach and 4 years as assistant football coach; Ruth Hanna, departing after 22 years as secretary to guidance; Isabel Dukes, leaving after 15 years of guidance. 11 in Roosevelt and 4 years in the high school; Marie Sweeney, retiring after 24 yeors as secretary to the principal; Jim Donovan, leaving after being Assistant Su-perintendent since 1975.____ m Mari© Sweeney 23 i I think that the most significant as well as the most exciting progress occurs on the individual level- the personal increase in knowledge of students and teachers. Institutionally, education seems slow to change. The back to basics movement, despite its essential strength, ignores the findings of much recent educational research.-Elizabeth Corieil Students seem to be becoming complex in terms of the cultural, economic. political and social phenomena that they are bombarded with. And. therefore, greater attention is demanded of me to meet the more complex and radically differing needs of each student.-Robert Eyre I believe the world of communication is rapidly growing. I feel our methods of communication and of seeking information w l change our lives. It's the age of the computer and television advancement and I wonder if we are prepared. -JoAnn Gainer Students today are more in tune with the reality that the world is the challenger, the student the challenged; that it is the ability to perform, and not ignorance or defiance, that Involves them in the pursuit of their own goals.- .cvs Hopkins We reflect a more conservative, cautious, and self-directed culture. Changes in the society are reflected in the microcosm of the high school. I think that learning is magic when it works .-Paula Roy The Westfield school system differs from the others I've taught in because each school says it it is going to make an effort to help each student individually; Westfield High School is one that actually does. And I like that.-Ethel Williams Walt Clarkson 24 25 ifc, A..' ■ iSkV Yd . v; ir lf? 1 4- ■ A j V i 4 % ? Lois Hopkins Harriet Louden 26 Thomas Ryan Sally Vejnoska Pamela Wychunas Paula Roy Chairperson 27 FOREIGN LANGUAGE There is a stronger emphasis on communication in language orally. Students seem interested in that aspect of learning. I find that a much greater number of students have foreign travel or residence experience. They're much more confident of themselves as a result of having had that experience.-Nancy Didier We have maintained a consistency of quality education and have continued to strive towards improvement. There is more emphasis on the affective education of the student rather than only the cognitive.-Su-zanne Jacobus I believe that the study of a foreign language is not complete without learning something about people of the particular country. The more we know about the people. the better we are able to understand them.-John Scafaria Anthony Frinzi Spanish Danielle Gurion French 29 Combining social studies with other subjects such as English is an important change in the field of history. For example, studying Puritanism in English contributes to this particular period studied in history classes. We are trying to treat history as part of an interdisciplinary approach.- Steven Affros When I first began teaching it was do your own thing,” but now we're back to basics. Today good, strong fundamental courses help people to get a good job. A lot of the elective courses are now being dropped. This reflects a movement back to the basic core curriculum, making semester electives strictly elective, not contributing to the two years of American History that are required of all students.-Karen Stark Douglas Considin© 30 James Geoghegan James Drummond moNf Thomas Hornish 31 32 MATHEMATICS Patricia Baer Margaret Bjerklie Karen Citrin Helen Coe Merilyn Diamond Kathleen Dix 33 ( r ertec Leona Jensen Chairperson Teaching makes you more comfortable in group situations; you develop a tough hide.-Donna Hornish Computer Science is definitely expanding. The town has recognized the importance of computers and is providing the money for additional terminals. The computer science expansion is in the interest of the town.-Les Jacobsen I think that the installment of the computer system, as well as the wide variety of honor and slow classes, are definite advancements in the field of math.-Jeon Russo Les Jacobsen 34 Patricia Perry Anthony Quagliano Jean Russo Peter Schweikhari 35 36 I believe that teaching in Project 79 demands ditferent approaches and methods to accomplish social and academic losks.-Perry Coultas The kids are more 'with it'. They are more fun. more exciting. They ore also sharper ond more aware. The faculty was good then, ond it's good r ow.-Leland Goslin David Stonebi Chairperson I Jay Waldstein 38 PHYSICAL EDUCATION Gary Kehler jgS Assistant Director I don't see any real changes in the school system The only change is that the students have more individual freedom than they had before. There is a more liberal atmosphere now .-John Lay The ability of the students to make more choices- for the good and the bad-has increased. You have an unassigned block of time on your schedule now. You have greater options now (the library, the resource centers, etc.) -Richard Zimmer 39 Katherine Luckey BUSINESS Catharine Chance Anthony Fotiu Marilyn Gray READING 42 Anne Nichols. Dawn Ganss. Helen Aagre. Paula Dropkin, Lila Kirkwood. FINE ARTS 43 There is a greater enrollment in choir now and students want more of a challenge in music. There are higher goals at Westfield High School, which take more time, effort, and commitment.-James BeH I sti3 maintain that kids are terrific. The world has changed but kids have really stayed the same. Kids still respond to sincerity.-Jean McDermott People are exploring the possible career choices involving art with the realization that there are many solid careers in the art world. There now exists a more serious approach rather than a purely recreational attitude toward art work.-Arthur Silveira INDUSTRIAL ARTS 44 HEALTH SERVICES CAFETERIA STAFF CUSTODIAL STAFF RESOURCE ROOM TEACHERS 46 I have developed more patience in dealing with all people as a result of my teaching. My respect for young people has grown.-Lorraine Besch The Westfield Senior High School hasn't changed much except that it seems to be swinging back to a basic curriculum of study, with few frills. As I am a speciol education teacher. I know much has happened in the past few years to promote teaching children with special needs and trying to help them biend into the mainstream of society in order that they may become responsible adults.-Kathleen Ryan I | -TTT—rm MWWimnm— ?■ . After a fundraising car-wash, we attended a musical version of Voltaire's Candide. Our contributions to the Foreign Language Carnival included authentic French food (quiche, pain, mousse au chocolat, and bon-bons), a guillotine and can-can dancers. One of the year's highlights was an elegant Christmas banquet, followed by a series of meetings featuring debates, games, films, and, always, delicious 'cuisine.' 84 Everyone who is enrolled in a German class is a member of the German Club. Each year the club has a dinner; this year we were honored to have the dinner at the German Club in Clark. The sale of Gummi Bears is the yearly profit-making drive and each year we hold a Christmas cookie sale and donate the profits to a charity. We hold elections mid-year and our current president is Peary Brug. 85 ITALIAN CLUB The Italian Club serves as an extension of classroom activities; its purpose is to foster appreciation of Italian culture. The monthly meetings and the special events (Italian Night, International Carnival, trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Little Italy) give students greater insight into various cultural aspects. 86 LATIN CLUB The 1982-83 Latin Club consists of 75 members. The advisor is Ms. Madelyn Tochka and consuls are Samantha Ransom and Brian Drury. Activities have included a Toga Party, the holiday Saturnalia Party, a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March Regional Certamen at Cranford High School, and the Junior Classical League Convention. The Awareness Club is designed to keep minority identity alive and to instill in others the need to be sensitive to the minority's plight in and outside of school. The Awareness Club welcomes participation by all students. The Awareness Club's goals are: 1 To provide experience for minority teens that will provide and promote cultural pride. 2. To develop in each member a feeling of being worthwhile; trust in self. 3. To provide recreation from the daily pressures of life by creating healthy use of leisure time. 4. To become aware of accomplishments by black peers and to expand interactions with black students-from other communities. 5. To participate in community and school projects. 91 INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS In its first year, the International Affairs Club has sought to provide its members with an opportunity to acquire a further understanding of our world, its people and their problems. Toward this end, the fall semester was devoted to preparation for and participation in the Model U.N. sponsored by the Middle Atlantic Region Y.M.C.A. The three day program was held December 10-12 at Hershey Pa., with over 600 students from Maryland to New York participating. This spring the club will focus upon world problems such as hunger, peace, and international economic problems. In each case the members will organize a learning activity and hopefully have speakers that are knowledgable in each field come to the high school. 92 DEBATE CLUB Arguing, something we students do daily at home, is the main activity of the Debate Club, now in its second year. The club, advised by Mr. David Brown, has competed in a debate tournament. In '83, the club members plan to expand into other forensic areas and to enter speech tournaments. Dr. Petix better watch out; he now has competition for the position of school orator . 93 KEY CLUB Key Club is a member of the Kiwanis family. It provides service to the school and community. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society, led by our V.G. advisor, Mr. Quagliano, is a service organization that assists our high school in 5280 ways such as the Information Desk, and ushering at Back-To-School-Night and at College Night. As a group we use the recycling center and our famous Coke machine as fund raisers. As individuals we participate in tutorial programs. And don't forget that rainy 7 a.m. Flea Market which turned out beautifully! S.F.S.G.? T.Y.M.Q. vi waa The Mask Mime Club is Westfield High School's drama club. The club is under the direction of Mrs. Harriet Louden, head of the speech and drama department. Mask Mime produces the fall drama and the spring production. The 1982-1983 officers are Paul Kranz - President, Greg Pryor—first Vice-President, Jim Hall-second Vice-President, Kathy Cannon-Secretary, and Steve Schwartz-Treasur-er. One of the many branches of Mask 8c Mime is Children's Theatre, a group of students that tours the grammar schools presenting improvised skits and children's stories. The student directors for Children's Theatre are Stephanie Greenfield and Jennifer Zanger. 97 During the last week of August each year a group of WHS students travel to the mountains of Pennsylvania. They leave the high school as individuals, many of whom are meeting for the first time, they return as a cohesive, close knit family of students with one single goal of perfecting their marching technique and music in order to entertain the football crowds and enter field marching competition. And so it begins. These students, grades 9-12, practice everyday for two hours to prepare for a busy fall schedule of approximately 15 performances. Although they are visible at all our football games, the band comes into their own when they don the garb of a precision drill organization and compete head to head against other bands in field competitions. The Marching Band offers fun, excitement, comradeship, and a sense of accomplishment to all who are fortunate enough to be a part of the organization. 98 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Tremolo-pizzicato-forte; all these terms and more are used to describe some of the activities of Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Charles Oehrf-mann. is comprised of talented string, wind, and percussion players, and membership is available to all interested students. This year's activities included concerts, and a field trip to see the New York Philharmonic in rehearsal coupled with a tour of Lincoln Center. SYMPHONIC BAND The 1982-83 WHS Symphonic Band is comprised of seventy students. This year's band has struck a balance of instrumentation and sound that has already begun to show, even though they have been together only a short time. This band's activities will include an exchange concert to the Syracuse area of N.Y., three concert performances in Westfield, and at least one Concert Competition Tour. The members of this organization seek to perfect their musical techniques both as individuals and as a performing group. At the end of the Marching Band season, the band front or Color Guard strikes out on its own to compete throughout the winter season indoors as the WHS Winter Guard, SPECTRUM. This Guard is smaller than the Color Guard, chosen through a highly competitive and selective tryout process which is open to all students whether in Marching Band or not. SPECTRUM competes with other guards in drill, dance, and interpretation of music. The season culminates with the Eastern Band Association Winter Guard Championships. 102 CHESS CLUB While most students stop racking their brains at 2:45, the Chess Club members continue doing so until long after 4:00. The club, advised by Dr. Hoffman, consists of two five-person teams. The upper and lower level teams battle other schools in head-to-head matches, with each player squaring off against an opponent. The club hopes to check out as king of the Union County Chess League. 103 In the tradition of excellence in science, the Physics Club provides a forum for science students to confront current issues. Professionals from industry and academia present lectures on their interests and research. Topics have included liquid crystals, bio-physics, electron tunneling, and the physics of music. Students also prepare presentations on areas outside the curriculum such as space travel. Moebius strips. Einstein's equation, time dilation, and cosmologies. Other activities available to members are the annual Physics Olympics, science films, and several science contests throughout the year. 104 Saturday Science consists of a six-week program in the early spring of each year, Researchers and university professors give freely of their time to lecture on topics within their expertise. The biological and physical sciences are presented through lectures on topics such as fusion, recombinant DNA, applications of technetium, and the origin of earth life. Doughnuts and cider are served during the two to three hour lecture-discussion sessions on Saturday mornings. In the past year the Saturday Science group took trips to hear Issac Asimov, Jearl Walker, and Dr. Rosalyn Yalow, the Nobel Laureate. Saturday Science members may also enter an enormous variety of contests from local to national levels involving all levels and interests in science. 105 CHOIR 106 The choral department consists of four choirs: Choraleers, Choir, Girls' Chorus, and Mixed Chorus. This year's groups will present two major programs, one during December and the other in May. In addition to these programs the students will sing for many outside-of-school functions and will participate in the A.C.D.A. Choral Festival at Trenton State College. Twelve of the W.H.S. choral members were in All State this year and the choir ranks as one of the best in the state. 107 COMPUTER CLUB LookI I con even do these programs with my eyes dosed!” The Computer Club meets bimonthly for preparation for, and participation in, the American Computer Science League Contests. There are five contests throughout the year culminating in an All-Star's Final contest with individual awards given to the members of the winning team. 108 MATHEMATICS LEAGUE The WHS Mathematics League participates regularly in state-wide contests. These contests are held on a Tuesday each month from October to March and consist of six problems. While usually not conceptually difficult, these questions require basic mathematical dexterity and an ability or creativity to see through useless information to the real problem. In addition to these contests, the League participates in individual national mathematics tests. Math students in every grade come to challenge their problem-solving skills and improve each year. FILM-MAKING CLUB The Film-making Club has been operating all year to create films worthy of being entered in the New Jersey Young Peoples' Film Festival. Dedicated members have contributed long hours of script-writing. acting, filming, and editing to complete exciting original cinematic projects. no The Lighting Crew, under the direction of Mrs. Harriet B. Louden, has gotten off to a great new year. With the production of Harvey past, they are looking forward to working on the upcoming productions. The Lighting Crew is an elite group of WHS'ers led by senior, Maria Thomas. They are responsible for designing the lights for every WHS production and they work closely with the directors and producers to make each show a success. Love CROSS-COUNTRY The Girls' Cross Country team completed it's 1982 season with a respectable 4 and 3 dual meet record under the leadership of Tom Hornish and captains Cindy Best, Carrie Mullan, and Ellen Klingelhofer. Even with the overwhelming burden of injury, the team completed the season with a set of strong individual performances. With the success of individuals also came 3rd place in the country and 5th place in the Watchung Conference. Though the team did not achieve its ultimate goal of repeating as state champions, the season was a success. We extended Westfield's undefeated dual meet winning streak to 44 and won the Watchung Conference, Union County and Stewart Memorial Invitational Titles. In the state meets, we finished second in the sectionals and forth in the Group IV race. Coach Clarkson's last season was as successful as his others, and he leaves a quality group for his successor. They finished the season 4th in the state by winning the Union County Championship and the Regional of the State Tournament. Kathy Federici, Marcy Kessler, and Beth Weinstein were all powerful singles players that provided us with decisive wins. Along with good singles players, the team also had the strong doubles teams of Marybeth Taylor and Cat Chapman, in addition to Chrissy Corbet and Sarah Powell. Besides being a well disciplined team, they still had a lot of good times and fun. Thanks to our coach. Miss Luckey, who made the practice as much a good time as a good workout.
