Its walls house a nebulous, inexplicable other-world, enticing to some, threatening to others. Yet, as each student enters, the school suddenly seems alive to him; he begins to shape his environment as it shapes him. Students quickly ad- just to busy schedules and become absorbed in school activities which, though common to every school in every year, seem the exclusive possession of W.H.S. in this year. Club meetings, drama and music rehearsals, sporting events, gatherings in the courtyard, smoking area and cafeteria, rendezvous in the halls and at lock- ers—all become a part of the carefree, vital spirit that comprises school life. 5 6 7 The high school exists as a world apart—an exuberant but evanescent realm belonging only to the teenager— imbued with its own distinct rules and routines, its unique spirit, its individual tests of achievement and acceptance, its special amusements. 8 The year passes quickly ... its time measured by bells and marking periods, by paper deadlines, exams, and long- awaited vacations ... its attainments by grades and test scores, class rank, records, awards and trophies, college acceptances and scholarships ... its amusements from sporting events, phone conversations, cruising, concerts and parties. Despite occasional frustrated expectations and academic pressures, it is ultimately a harmonious, nurtur- ing world of educational growth, of deepening friendship, and spirited unity. 9 10 Then it is gone—sophomore, then junior, then senior year. A time so vivid, so pre- eminent subsides into memory. At gradu- ation seniors look back at their three years at W.H.S. The memory of the school life will remain in their minds forever. The diploma received will always remain as a symbol of not only the hard work put into high school years, but also as a reminder of the carefree life led by every student. 12 is I have always felt that Westfield High School came into existence the day I entered it, was vibrantly real while I was a student there, and then blinked out like a candle the day I left. Now here it was after ail, preserved by some considerate hand . . Built in large part around a core of fine teachers, this excellence encompasses course offer- ings for students with limited interest in the sciences, those in the basic college preparatory courses, and students whose involvement in the sciences includes col- lege level AP courses. The goal of the science department is to provide courses that enable any student at Westfield to become scientifically literate—a require- ment lor intelligent interaction in our highly advanced technological society. David Stoneback Chairperson 32 Foreign Language ’The Foreign Language Department seeks to promote the linguistic skills without which a true appreciation of another culture is impossible. Tarantellas, Mardi Gras, Saturnalia, Bull Fights, Kookie Verkauf - are a few of the many club activities with a foreign accent which enhance and extend the pleasures of second (and third) language learning. John Scafaria Chairperson 35 Social Studies The social studies focus is on people, the world and on the relationships between the two. They assist in develop- ing understandings about the relationships between human beings and their environment, between human beings and other human beings, and human beings to themselves Within this context, the social studies are concerned with developing skills in the processes of thinking as opposed to the memorization of facts. Mr. Dello Russo has seen WIIS through the eyes of a student, a teacher, and finally, an administrator. Between 1939 and 1942, he was a student here at Westfield and a member of the football team. Having served thirteen years as a woods and mechanics teacher, Mr. Dello Russo was responsible for many accomplishments in the industrial arts department. For example, he began the tradition of having all the industrial arts classes undertake an annual joint project. As head disciplinarian, Mr. Dello Russo has worked closely with the student body of WHS since 1969. The 1982 Weather Vane acknowledges Robert Dello Russo s strong leadership and significant contributions to Westfield High School. Thank you, Mr. D.! 47 'It is easier for a man to be loyal to his club than to his planet; the bylaws are shorter and he is personally acquainted with the other members.” F.B. Handmade ceramic crafts and baked goods were sold at the holiday music performance. Cupid arrows were delivered in HR on Valen- tine’s Day. This club has been established so that individuals, in triguing or intrigued, can philosophise and endeavor with adult games. 82 GOO i Math League The Awareness Club was formed several years ago in order to foster and represent the feelings of Black culture and Black consciousness in the WHS student body. For years the club was called the Black Awareness Club, but the name change to Awareness Club has opened the club to all. Awareness Club 83 Ping Pong Club Architects Club The Architects Club, a newly formed club at WHS, is made up of Mr. Hart's Architecture and Engineering classes. The group was formed to share a common interest in structure and design. The 15 members have visited colleges, conventions, and exhibits. In addition to the several lectures and workshops they have attended, they were fortunate enough to have a guest speaker from Arizona. They have also actively taken part in designing renovations currently underway. 85 Sports r Cheerleaders 'Fight 'em Beat 'em—Defeat 'em. That's the sound of WHS’s most earnest supporters of athletics. Our wrestlers, football, basketball, and soccer players would probably be very unhappy without cheerleaders. These girls give them incentive to play hard and win. They start by emblazoning the school walls with posters, urging school and team spirit. Then they decorate the players’ lockers so that each team member knows that he is being rooted for individually. At the game, the cheerleaders' true function is exhibited with their bursting energy and inspiring chants: they lead the crowd of spectators, forming a throbbing mass of what we call spirit . Our teams can always expect the best from our cheerleaders. 88 a- ’sjpsr 'mnr — tv Football The 1981 Football Team managed to create another splendid season; an 8-2 record, a conference title, and semifinalists in the state play-offs all amounted to an admirable year. Boosted by a No. 1 in the state’ pre- season rating, the Blue Devils opened with an inspiring 27- 7 victory over Summit. Unable to keep their momentum, the Devils received a devastating blow from Elizabeth, losing by a 7-29 score. After that, the team got back into swing and won their next seven games. The season was highlighted by the final game at the Meadowlands, even though they fell to Union, 0-14, Many team members were honored individually for their outstanding play. All in ail, the season was enjoyable for the players as well as the fans. jt. lsc R. (I. to r.): M. Giacone, M. Clarke, K. Morris, K. Wenta, M. Stainer, J. Kessler, C. Drabin, A. Beckett, R. What started the tight? asks an innocent bystander at the Westfield-Scotch Plains game. This year's Booter squad consisted of 23 boys willing to sacri- fice all of their time and even a few black and blue marks to achieve their goals with energy and entliu - siasm to spare. The 1981 Soccer Team accomplished more than any other team in Westfield's history, winning the Watchung Conference, the Union County Title, and reaching the state finals, only to lose in double overtime to the only team able to defeat the Blue Devils all season. Every player on the team was willing to stand by and protect his team- mates, no matter who or what was in the way. With such comradeship, teamwork and talent, the 1981 squad leaves a tough act to follow. 1st R. (1. to r.}: Coach Leonow, P. Zanet, M. Wellmann, T. Miller, G. Gleason, D. Frasso, B. Macaluso, A. With the help of co-captains Julia Dillon and most valuable senior Karen Bellew, the coaches led the team to a solid season, despite injuries of some of the team's best. The team ended with a 7-7 record, and placed seventh at the County Championships. However, the true potential of the team was not shown through the record. This year was a rebuilding year, for only one senior, Andrea Rottenberg, returned to the varsity team. The team was comprised of one other senior, Marilyn Jenkins and six juniors, including the three captains, and Maria Fleming and Carol Traynor. The girls gained experience by playing older and more experienced teams, and during the second halt of the season the girls showed tremendous improvement in their overall play. Having lost all five starters from last year, the squad was very inexperienced. Midway through the season the team’s record was a dim 2-10 but this is deceiving due to the fact that the Devils lost several games by fewer than four points. Throughout the season captain Jack Baldwin and seniors Jerry Basto and Frankie Christ- mas led the team, each averaging in double figures. West- field was faced with playing the top teams in the state, which included Linden, Plainfield and Monclair. One team which did not trouble Westfield was Scotch Plains, as the Devils defeated them twice early in the season. 106 1st R.fl. to r.): Coach Soviero, D. Hauck, S. Murphy, C. Frerecks, E.
