Riding on a tapestry of all there is to see So many ways and oh so many things Rejoicing in the differences There’s no one just like me Yet as different as we are We’re still the same! —John Denver The activities of young people in our area reflect a panorama of opportunity. This geographical region is one that allows for a catholicity of interest amongst its inhabitants: mountains and seashores, urban centers and countrysides. Snow for students in this area means skiing; warm spring days signal a cut day of school and a trip to the beach. One often journeys into nearby New York for big stores, shopping, museums, sporting events and concerts. Likewise, many find it refreshing to “get back to nature” by visiting the region’s many parks and forests. Sometimes school seems like a life sentence. Teachers haunt the homes of students and school-work is an inescapable burden. However, sporadically, the call to irresponsibility sounds more clearly than the voices of Newton and Einstein. At these times Westfield responds resoundingly with a chorus of possibilities for diversion. Cars, bicycles, and skateboards offer three ways to leave homework behind, and records and dancing surely elevate any test grade. 6 If you are motivated, you can get a good education, but I think I’U remember the friendships and good times before the formula for gross national product or the theme of Moby Dick. s Amy Lewis School is often worthless. Mrs. Lois R. Hopkins At some point in the early morning, light from a newly risen sun filters into WHS and transforms dark halls into dreary ones. At the same time students begin to see the rolling serpentine halls through which they stumble, and acknowledge friends with grunts and nods. For three periods this hypnotic intrusion into the daily routine holds sway at WHS until homeroom finally dispels the empty, misty stupor, and school and life reassert themselves in earnest. area engaftCQ, ukc incur icuow scnooimave in an avwmiiv w escape the hectic waves of academia by which they are overwhelmed. seemingly mm People drift in and out of room 12G attempting to find direction for their lives. The Career and College Resource Center provides abundant material concerning further education and career possibilities. In addition, the Guidance Dept, attempts to solve the more immediate difficulties of schedule conflicts, academic dilemmas and SAT registration. The Business Education and CIE programs offer the opportunity for the participants to obtain on-the-job training, developing special skills while also taking academic courses. Students engaged in such a curriculum graduate from high school prepared to work in their chosen fields. 39 42 43 The pent-up frustrations inherent in every individual engaged in the art of learning find an outlet in the use of volley balls, hockey sticks and badminton racquets. Even the most adamant loner finds himself joining forces with unknown faces as all engage in the pursuit of birdies and hidden dreams of glory. Allegiances change from day to day as the line-ups are altered, yet the human competitive drive is sufficient to transform a 43-minute period into a lifetime of memories. 46 09 ym. j IS Another Saturday night and nothing to do. So what's new? Went to Friendly’s and was having a good time ’til I got thrown out. Can't afford Rialto, and I don't want to see Jaws again, anyway. I could try to go to the § movies in Linden if I only had a car. Where's the nearest party? That’s free, but what a bore. So what’s new? 52 54 taking some very liberal interesting classes no exams only chatty read-a-lots in a group talking about the nature of man. nature of university, nature of USA. nature of good, nature of history and many many digressions in passing and all a lot of work learning a lot oh yes every day things to do 'have you read this book, it s worth reading' so I read it and give my opinion they say yeah. yeah, and give theirs the week passes in a flash the weekend arrives I still feel it’s Monday can l believe it the moment what do I have to do? check my mind make a list head into time we all want to learn we all read so much and specialize get into it we all know each other and give our m inds to the discussion of whatever u e might be on now and then we argue but never bitterness soon it will be over just as a week has flashed just as everything has gone only a few things remain Marc Weber 61 . massta I 62 «W ' V,7 ' Xy. The faculty, combatting student apathy, attempts to motivate the students to become critical thinkers. How the students utilize their education is beyond the control of the faculty, for the instruction is a foundation and not a framework. Par sliding this is the self-assured Junior, hardened with heavier workloads and increasing responsibilities. The Junior serves as an axis between the apprehensive Sophomore and the allknowing Senior. This is the undergraduate collage. L'i -V k; k J H.R. 101 First Row: K. Auda, L. Bailey. V. Ashcroft, N. For many students who participate in the wide scope of extracurricular activities, IPOS provides more than just teachers blackboards, and desks. Curricular is incomplete without: 'f The HI’S EYE is more than the four or six page newspaper that arrives at homerooms on Friday mornings. The HI’S EYE is a vehicle for fighting apathy, channeling expression, learning to cooperate with peers, sensing responsibility, and developing maturity. The union of such functions culminates when the paper returns from the printer. Did the pictures come out right? Do the headlines read well? Did the copy get butchered? Is the page too “vertical” or too “busy”? None of it is easy. We strive for a goal every year, and we meet it. “If it’s Friday, and there’s school, there’s HI’S EYE.” I I Dunkin’ Munchkins . . . Girls are accepted, contradicting the image of greasy little chessplayers with bifocals. Among the weaponry are forks, overloads, skewers, 0-0-0, 0-0, P-Q4 mate, Rook power, and heaving a Queen to confuse the enemy. The chess board serves as a testing ground for future Bobby Fischers. Stressing cooperation, interaction, and involvement with the student population at WHS, the National Honor Society deviates from its stereotyped intellectual image to assume a capacity for community dedication. Under the tutelage of their inspirational and ingenious leader, the incumbent Mr. Quagliano, the energetic NHS’ers undertake a variety of projects to raise money. Revenue from the annual Flea Market and Talent Show plus the numerous quarters garnered from the coke machine create a generous account from which scholarships may be awarded to deserving members of the graduating class. In addition, this highly competent and self-sufficient organization utilizes a rare abundance of talent to provide the entire Westfield school system with a rather formidable and unequalled tutoring service. y of C S7 v A.s t€mv y.yy y £ ? 4 Not to be outdone by Capitol Hill on this 200th anniversary of American politics, WHS has once again generated an extensive governmental system with which to combat the ills of schoolroom society. Student Council, an exercise in democracy, comprises a group of inquisitive students trying their hands at self-government. Programs forged in third period meetings and decisions made in the student council office affect every student from the cold, hungry early riser (coffee and donuts), to the socially minded blood donors. In recognition of the significance of 1976 to all Americans, the Council organized a Bicentennial Day which featured exhibits representing aspects of colonial life — the culmination of two centuries and of one school year. 194 195 Choral students at WHS exist as members of a department in which none are stars, but all are featured players. The constant search for that perfect note is heightened by the varying modes of interpretation and expression which are intrinsic to a large body of individuals. That cameraderie which develops between members of the various ensembles finds its ultimate culmination in the close rapport which is established between performers and audience as each faction acknowledges, in its own manner, the beauty of musical composition. 196 An orchestra contains a variety of instruments, each contributing a unique shade or texture of sound. Although divided into sections, the orchestra works as one in a communal effort to reach the goal of creating beautiful music. Orchestra provides each of its members with an outlet for self-expression and creativity. The entire world is able to appreciate the orchestra’s effort because music is a language everyone understands. Combining the skills of a constantly practicing sporting team, the precision of a military unit and the artistry of a musical ensemble, the Marching Band gains in competitive spirit, teamwork, and friendship throughout a season of athletic events and band competitions. Victory in these competitions allows the Marching Band to enjoy schoolwide recognition and personal satisfaction. 199 Drama provides an outlet for creative expression through the combined efforts of directors, actors and stage crews. Mask and Mime produced two major productions, “Look Homeward Angel,” and “Godspell,” and directed Repertory Company and Children’s Theater. The theater has an exciting quality to it — fantasy and reality all at once. 200 W.H.S s mechanical masterminds, manipulating unmanageable masses of machinery and daily performing fantastic feats in fixing and fitting failing facilities — the missing links between Man and Machine. 202 The goal of the awareness group is to unify the entire school body through different activities in which all will be interested and through making changes within the school system. However, before this goal can be achieved, more student participation is necessary. 203 Each Tuesday a small group of devoted individuals assemble in room 110 to play backgammon. Are they crazy? Perhaps not, for this board game has fascinated people since ancient times. Beneath its pretentious and effete image lies a relaxing social hour for some and a tense and competitive experience for others. The Bible can serve as a guide, a collection of laws, or simply a historical and philosophical work of ancient sages. The purpose of the Bible Club is to study the scriptures, not as a literary work, but as a revelation of God’s word. Members not only examine the sacred teachings, but also attempt to incorporate the morality of the Bible into their daily lives. 205 Orators in training, members of the newly-formed Debating Team practice and perfect their craft of weaving words that will sway opinions while they gain poise, eloquence, and knowledge of controversial issues. The team has won several competitions this year, a remarkable feat for the young organization. 206 The Future Physicians Club, as its name implies, is an organization whose members are predisposed toward a study of the healing sciences. Obscure researchers veritably pop out of dull textbooks, and with their lectures enliven the topic of medical science. 207 All girls’ sports teams find unification in a single council which strives for recognition of the numerous and rapidly increasing achievements of women in sport. They raise money for these athletic endeavors and for scholarship grants by selling Nutty Buddies, recycling glassware and washing cars. 208 When the idea of a model train club pulled up to the WHS platform, no one knew what the final destination might be. Weeks of creative track design and fastidious layout execution culminated in a model train show — a railroading success. As committed engineers pursue the challenges of this exciting hobby, interest in this club is bound to build up steam. Participation in AFS entails sharing oneself with another family, adapting to the many different customs and values of a foreign environment, and forming an impression after the glimpse of another life style. The international exchange program requires the ability to abandon one’s own sheltered world and to open up to one’s own curiosity. 210 Beset by the lack of tables, nets, paddles, and undented balls, the Table Tennis Club overcomes its difficulties to enjoy a Friday afternoon of heated competition or pleasant relaxation. The annual club dinner culminates a season of doubles and singles tournaments.
