M r. Kursrn' helping a student in the lab. :- We, the Class of 1961, dedicate our Weather- Vane Annual to joseph F. Kursar. Mr. Kursar came to New Jersey from his native Miami Beach, Florida, at the early age of two. He was graduated from Bound Brook High School and attended Rutgers University, where he earned B.S. and M.Ed. degrees. Before coming to Westfield five years ago, Mr. Kursar taught biology and coached at Springfield High School and Asbury Park High School. During his service in Westfield High School, Mr. Kursar feels that many students know him best as coach of our swimming team. In his four years as coach his teams have all been outstanding. Together these teams have compiled a record of forty-five co-nsecu- tive wins without a defeat and two state champion- ships. To the members of his teams Mr. Kursar is best known as Coach . To his classes Mr. Kursar has brought humor, warmth, and understanding. These qualities helped a great deal to arouse interest in biology among his stu- dents. He believes that each person has potential for success and through hard Work can attain his goals. He applies this philosophy both in his coaching and his teaching. It is because of his understanding of us, confidence in us, and enthusiastic support of our class activities that we, the students of WHS, have chosen Mr. Kursar as dedicatee of our yearbook. The Editoris Foreword . . . One hundred years ago, the American people underwent a great crisis, as the ideals and philosophies of the North and the South grew gradually further apart. From this conflict in heliefs arose the Civil War, the great test of two separate ways of life. In a similar way, we as students find vast differences among our own ideas and goals, and so high school becomes our testing ground, as we meet the challenge of learning and, in part, begin to determine our fu- ture. The Civil War was a great battle- ground, in which men fought for what they believed was right. Throughout our lives there are con- flicts and struggles, and we take stands, defend them, and, if we are wrong, accept new ideas in place of our own. We are molding our lives, just as the Americans did in 1861, when they chose to ight. The fruit of their efforts became a unified, pow- erful nation. But now it is 1961, and here is what we have done .... MIKE KASS Editor-in-Chief 4 WESTFIELD SENIOR
