Band and Orchestra The band is made up of fifty-five members, The instrumentation is fifteen clarinets. five saxophones, one bassoon, one oboe. four flutes. two piccolos, f-our horns. four bass. nine rumpets, six trcm-bones, cymbals. bass drums, two snare drums, and bells. It has attennded many district and state contests and won honors in both. This organization played for all the home football and basketball games and always gave a fine performance. All the musical organizations owe their many successes to the untiring efforts of our capable and interested director. Mrs, Beelar. ' The orchestra is made up of forty-three members. The instrumentation is seventeen violins. one viola, four flutes. three trumpets. one string bass, three brass. fcur horns. two cellos, two trcmbones, one bassoon. four clarinets, piano, tympani and snare drums. It has attended district, state, and national contests and has always brought home honors. This organization is an important feature cf all plays, operettas, and other programs presented by the school. We are proud oi' the good instrumentation cf this organization, which is exceptional in such a small school, Vocal The vocal organization of the music dtparinient consists of Madrigal Club. Girls' Glee Club, Girls' Triple Trio, Girls' Quartet, Boys' Glee Club, and Boys' Quartet and Mixed Chorus. The Madrigal Club is composed of the select voices of the Glee Club and the Triple Trio is composed of nine select voices of the Madrigal Club. The highlight each year for these organizations is the operetta. This year the operetta was Tune In. A large cast and eseveral large choruses helped to make this mmsical comedy a success. The Madrigal Club represented Westfield High School in The Hoosier Music Festival at Indiana University this spring. Operetta As one of the high points of the year, the Music Department presented the operetta. Tune In, a modern comedy of a broadcasting station. The cast, eight choruses, and a special orchestra, as well as the other departments of the school all co-operated with Mrs. Bieelar in making this a very successful presentation. The following persons interpreted the characters: Kaspar Kroggins .....,. Mrs. Kroggins Jean Kroggins Joe Brown ....... Jerry Kennedy .... Tilly, Milly, Billy Dynamo Dave ....... Basketball The Westfield High School Basketball Season of 1935-36 closed with a total of nine games won and thirteen lost. The Sliamrocks started out in good style by winning four of their first games. Then they hit a slump which was not overcome for the next seven games. At the disastrous point in the schedule came the County Tournament. Having gone to the finals in the last two tourneys. Westfield was conceded among the strong con- tenders for the championship crown. However. Walnut Grove blackened all chances of gaining any honors by handing the Shamrocks a 37-23 defeat in their first game of the tourney. In the remainder of the schedule. the Shamrocks displayed 3 brand of ball playing which concluded their regular season with five consecutive victories. When the hardwood teams of Hamilton and Tipton counties met in the Sectional Tournament, Westfield was rated as one of the outstanding darkhorses, The Shamrocks entered the tourney in fine shape and turned back Walnut Grove in the first round of the tournament by a 22-20 count to avenge their defeat in the county championship bat- tle. In the second game, the Shcrldan Blackhawks showed their power to be too much for the Shamrocks by turning them back 26-14. This game ended the hardwood career of four seniors. In County coinpetiti-an the Green and White boys turned back five foes and lost six engagements to end up in fourth place in the county rating. The Shamrock Rcse1'ves endured a season much like the first team. They won nine and lost ten, The Freshman team suffered the worst defeats by losing four games and winning none, 1Continued on Page 24+
