THE EW STYLUS Left to Rl ht Seated Jgnlce Anderson Natnalre Haywood Mass Carlson Mrs Pettrt Mrs Trump Mass Rrpley Pauline Gretzmrer Margery Curtis Standing Gladys Read Martha Spencer Nancy Johnson Janet Burlergh Lyman Let ers Wyllran Kung Wllllam Lloyd Althea Prerce Roger Trump Margaret Newell Alan Sparks Clara Ann Newel Alan Harter Marianne Bixby Robert Brovrn Beatrrce Slocum Alrce Noble Lucrle Jackson Ruth Schuettz Although the New Stylus has not been published this year as a mimeographed magazine, a staff was appointed in the fall with Margaret Newell as editor, and school news has appeared more or less regularly in the Westfield Republican The staff felt that the regular publication should be dispensed with for the duration due to the shortage of paper and other materials, also because of the large part of the student body aiding the war effort by participation in outside activities The Stylus was first published in the early part of this century with Harold W Thompson, now famous for his book Body Boots, and Britches, as editor New Stylus under the editorship of Fay I-Iapgood In the spring of 1938 two issues of the New Stylus were published with Richard Allen acting as editor The faculty advisers, then as now, were Mrs Clara Trump, Literary Miss Gladys Pettit, Art, Miss Harriet Ripl y Mimeographing In the two succeeding school years the magazine was published six times, winning two first prizes in the Western New York Interscholastic Press Association m1gaz1ne compet1t1on and honorable metion in the yearbook competition Catherine Alexander was editor 1n chlef during this pcrlod With Frederick Trumo as editor the New Stylus won the first award m the magazine competition for the third consecutive year, thus giving this school permanent possession of the Buffalo Evening News trophy The magazine also won the All State Award that same year In the school year 1941 1942, under Albert Klng s editorship the New Stylus again won the All State award and also won new honor by placing second in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest When this war is won and con ditions are back to normal, plans will be made for a bigger and better Stylus fo go on winning new honors and fame for Westfield High 3 Z .
