WESTFIELD HIGH Westfield Wisconsin Pioneer '61 - 1 - Table of Contents Through Our Curriculum 3 Through Our Activities 15 Through Our Athletic Program 33 With Our Underclassmen 43 With Our Seniors 55 Foreword Progressing Onward and Upward is a phrase that best exemplifies our student body. It gives an explanation of how a student enters high school on the bottom step and works his way up to a super lor senior. Our curriculum, activities, athletic program, underclassmen, and seniors provide step- ping stones for Progressing Onward and Upward. - 2 - Through Our Curriculum Our principal objective in attending high school is furthering our knowledge and preparing for a career in business, the professions, or the sciences. Without the understanding and guidance of our parents, supervision of our school board, and the time and effort supplied by our teachers, we could not begin to qualify for our most important role as adult citizens. Board of Directors Members of the board of directors are Mr. Harold Fenske; Mr. John Long, Clerk; Mr. Richard Koats President; Mr. Melvin Doege; Mr. Donald Buchholz; Mr. Gilbert Thalacker; Mr. Arnold Zellmer; Mr. Wayne Johnson and Mr. Milton Busse, Treasurer, not pictured. .... Th SC mCn ate elected by the residents of the school district. The directors are given the responsi- bility of budgeting the district’s finances, over-all supervision of the school policy, and planning for fu- ture expansion of school facilities. Administration Mr. Floyd Brenholt, principal, assisted by a fac- ulty of 16 teachers, provides an educational program for 235 students. Under his direction, some revisions were made in the school's existing program. In the guidance system now in operation, more complete records are kept on each student. Also, a more extensive national testing program is available. A rotating lunch hour permits each third hour class period to have its full seventy minutes of class time. Now in effect is a monitor system which is de- signed to regulate the student traffic occurring be- tween classes. Mr. Francis Kohn, Superintendent Principal’s Message Mr. Floyd Brenholt Principal With your high school life, you have been training yourselves for the years of the future when you will have finished your formal education. Through you class work you learned facts which will be useful to you in later life, but you also learned how to learn, and you will never stop learning. Through classes and organizations you learned to work with other people, something you can never stop doing. Through activities you learned pro- ductive ways of using leisure time, and leisure time is something you will always have to fill. To those who are seniors this year, we wish our best. We hope we have provided you with a solid foundation in all phases of life, upon which you can build for yourselves a rich and rewarding future. -5- Home Economics Mrs. Merle Shurpit, Home Economics, instructs the Westfield High School girls for future home- making. Her subject matter covers cooking, sewing, home furnishings, child care, personal grooming, care of the sick, and guidance for married life. Mrs. Shurpit’s advanced home economics students are making useful decorative boxes. Mr. Kaczmarek, from his bandaged finger, shows no signs of pain as compared to Roger Mashack who is figuring out those difficult income tax forms. Business Education Mr. Norbert Kaczmarek, Business Ed- ucation, through the courses of typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and office prac- tice prepares students for vocational needs and personal-use objectives. - 6 - Language Mr. Francis Kohn, and Mr. Reinhard Latzig, Foreign Language, provide our student body with the necessary knowledge of two Euro- pean languages. In Latin, the essentials of this dead language are taught, since it serves as the basis for practically all modern languages. The interest of the student body in German, resulted in its ad- dition to the curriculum this year. Latin hi fj ’f% iff 'ilJhdti • - Can you figure out what Mr. Kohn is trying to put across to his bono Latin students? Herr Latzig emphasizes those confusing articles in Ger- man grammar. - 7- German Agriculture Mr. Richard Arnold, Agriculture, is responsible in his program for practical shop work with wood and metals, classroom study of technical agriculture, practical applica- tion of classroom learning through farm pro- jects, and social aspects of leadership de- velopment as found in the Ag Club. Mr. Arnold is showing his Ag Students how to use a band saw safely and correctly. Art Mrs. Lula Sanford. Art, covers the basic fundamentals of art such as complementary colors, perspective drawing, con- struction work, and metal enameling to teach her students the values of art appreciation. The art class gayly decorates our main room throughout the various seasons of the year. In the spring, art is combined with music to produce the Music and Art Festival. Science Mr. Loehning seems to be trying very hard to show his freshman science students how to use a microscope. General Science, the elementary high school science course is taught by Mr. Loehning and Mr. Arnold. Other science courses are Biology, Chemistry and Physics, all taught by Mr. Latzig. The study of these courses provides a student with much useful consumer information, but more important, their study is required for further work on a college level. These students have found something very interesting. Mr. Latzig is demonstrating an experiment for Bob Daye and Ken Mittelsteadt. Social Studies Mr. V. Clark, Social Studies, pre- pares students for their political and eco- nomic life through the study of govern- mental organizations, history of what is past, and the current problems of our American society. An allied subject in this field is geography, taught by Mr. D. Loehning. Mr. V. Clark checks an assignment in social studies with Gloria Krueger. Librarian Mrs. R. Runnels, Librarian, maintains an important department of our school, the library. During the year modem equipment and lighting have been installed in the library, making it a more pleasant place in which to work. Mrs. Runnels adjusts a letter on a bulletin board prepared by members of the Library Club. The displays focus student attention on the library and its many services. In ad- dition, arranging materials occupies the librarian's time. - 10 - Music Before an instrument can be played, it must be oiled and in working order. Ending the Veteran’s Day Program with a musical selec- tion are the members of the combined glee club under the direction of Mr. Johnson. Mr. K. Johnson and Mrs. I. Harvey, Music, direct musical activities which promote a student s cultural values. Opportunities are available for voice development or instruction in musical instru- ments. Wise use of leisure time is promoted by all the activities of the Music Department. Mathematics Mr. Backhaus, Mathematics, provides in the mathematics pro- gram needed knowledges for every- day living. In addition to provid- ing a fundamental background, the department provides work for ad- vanced students planning on further work in college. The subject of mathematics lends itself readily to individual student instruction and help. - 11 - English Mrs. Joye Kuhlka, English 11 and 12; Mr. Rogers Constance, English 9 and 10; instruct students in one of the most important subjects in our curriculum - English. Students learn the essentials of written and spoken commun- ication. Through poetry reading and litera- ture units, appreciation is developed for the literary masters. Mrs. Kuhlka puts a great deal of work into making her English courses interesting and en- joyable. Poetry and literature are a favorite part of Mr. Constance’s classroom teaching. A part of the freshman English in Mr. Bren- holt’s class is the diagraming of a sentence to learn its entire meaning. - 12 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION Miss Mary Reichhoff, Physical Education, instructs the Westfield High School girls in a variety of athletics, beginning with soccer in the fall and ending with softball in the spring. Mr. Robert Bostad trains the boys in the numerous athletic skills taught in the physical education program. aiiiiiiiiiiiiciniiiiiiiiiiaiiiiiiiitiiiijiiiiimiiiiiaiiiiiiiiiiiiaiiiiiiiiiiiici Girls’ Glee Club Mrs. Iris Harvey, di- rector of the Girls' Glee Club, develops and trains the girls voices, preparing them for the solo-ensem- ble contest and music fes- tival in the spring. - 13 - Mrs. Shirley Floeter Mrs. Opal Maager Cafeteria Mrs. Mary Campbell Mrs. Kay Christensen Mrs. Nettie Selk Mrs. Margaret Hammond Maintenance Mr. Walter Brose Mr. Glen Haney Office Staff Through Our Activities Our school’s extra-curricular activities provide the student with a variety of interests. Students participate in activities to achieve the learning resulting from working together. Some activities are for sheer enjoyment, while others are time-consuming and require a vast amount of work. Even though activities for students are incidental to the educational program, the advisors use them to provide learning experience. - 15 - Our Student Government Student Council members, left to right: Bonnie Wollert. Jane Hamilton. Ann Follett, Dean Roney. Ralph Roney, Bonnie Meyer, Bill Bohn, Yvonne Fritz, and Bill Jacobs, president, were given the re- sponsibility of providing industrious ideas and programs for the functioning of our school. Mr. Backhaus and Mr. Brenholt attended the council meetings in an advisory capacity. At the beginning of the school year, our council carried out the magazine campaign. The proceeds of the campaign are used for providing lyceum programs for the coming year. Career Day, February 10. at WHS, was also planned and organized by our student council for the benefit of the seniors from the Adams-Friendship, Montello, Plainfield, Wautoma, and Westfield high schools. Planning a lounge for the library is on the council's agenda for the future. - 16 - ROW ONE: left to right, V. Kottke, J. Schwersenska, S. Weiss, B. Meyer, B. Briese, M. Loose, L. Long. ROW TWO: P.
