“
Through this hall we journeyed to many happy events, and the Senior Class proudly presents the 1954-55 PIONEER to review for you the events of one year at Westfield Union Free High School A NOTE TO YOU i “Without a song, the day would never end, without a song, the road would never bend.” In keeping with the dedication of this “PIONEER” to our musical director, Mr. Johnson, we present a yearbook in song, emphasizing the co-operation by all with the theme, “Side by Side.” We hope this annual may someday bring back happy memories and in some way brighten and shorten your day. Once again Westfield students have brought many honors to them- selves and to their school and it has been accomplished only with a great willingness to work and through cooperation. In the following pages we shall try to bring back to you the events of a very successful year, and the people who made these events. To our musical director and senior class advisor, Mr. Johnson, we dedicate this 1954-55 edition of the “Pioneer” as a small token of appreciation for all he has done for us. We are grateful for his contributions as a teacher and an advisor to the schools organizations during the past four years. Most of all, we the Seniors of 1955 appreciate the friendliness and coopera- tion of Mr. Johnson who has worked with us and planned with us. c)L C HONOR STUDENTS VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATORIAN K JUNIORS ...... . ::: •........ ..........!: . .... ........ As one of their money-making schemes, each member of the class brought homemade candy which was sold. Their first big activity was sponsoring the Home- coming Dance. The Annual Staff, which is composed of 25 members, has again produced the “Pioneer”, our 1955 edition of the school year book. With the help of our capable advisor Mr. Brenholt, we brought you “Side By Side” to bring back memories of organizations, activities, athletic events and individuals. To further their knowledge of producing a year book, the Editor and Layout Editor attended the State Editors’ Conference with their advisor, Mr. Brenholt. To improve our financial situation, we sold concessions at football and basketball games and also sold ath- letic programs with the help of the Clarion staff. After the final step of handing out an- nuals, we staff members, feeling the need for a rest, relaxed at the annual picnic, held in the late spring. NEWSPAPER STAFF Because of our new Offset Press” and under the fine guidance of Mr. Kohn, the Clarion staff presented to the student body a finer, more inter- esting, more enjoyable “Clarion”. The “Offset Press” allowed them to print and publish cheaper and faster. This new press proves to be more educational as well as adding much needed color to the printed material. Both Mr. Kohn and Mr. Bren- holt have stated that it presents an easier type of printing and at the same time produces a better printed product. Eleven members of the staff have experienced their last year and will be greatly missed. But under the direction of next year’s editors, headed by Nancy Dewar, we feel that once again a fine Clarion” will be produced. Each member should be credited with a job well done. First row: J. Their duties are to help students in finding books, to keep the library in good order, check out books, and many others. The girls receive a fourth of a credit every year for doing this work. The purpose of this club is to help the girls understand more about the library and about the duties of a librarian. They also took part in selling concessions at some of the home games. This year the Senior librarians took a trip to the large library in Madison. President .. .. Vice President Secretary .. .. Treasurer .... Advisor....... ......Ann Leach .. . An exceptionally large crowd was in attendance for the Home- coming events. On that memorable evening, Jerry Muske, co-captain of the football team, crowned Mary Ellen Thiede queen, and Gordon Blatchley king of the 1954 Homecoming. The theme “Blue Hawaii” was carried out beauti- fully in many ways. The gym was decorated in blue crepe paper and artificial flowers. Hal Edwards’ wonderful orchestra furnished the soft music from beneath two huge palm trees. Hawaiian pineapple punch was served throughout the entire evening. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen in a huge white morning glory. BAND Middle front row: S. Krentz, J. Campbell, J. Fullmer, C. Linaberry, C. Roney, J. Siegel, C. Under the direction of Mr. Johnson, the musical organiza- tions really did a fine job of the musical this year. A great deal of comedy, some fine music, and plenty of work, produced one of the most enjoyable per- formances of any group during the year. M U s I c A L bo Nt V. Swick, M. Fullmer, L. Tofari, D. Forensics began this year by approximately 30 members taking part in the local contest held March 11. Two members from each division were selected to go on to the league contest held March 18 at Adams. A change was made this year in effect that a cup was not given to the school winning the most awards. Mr. Brenholt and Mr. Kohn, the advisors, helped every member considerably. This year there were eleven students out for debate. There were three practice tournaments. One was held at Stevens Point one at Merrill, and one at Eau Claire; fol- lowed by the debate contest held at Stevens Point on Feb. 5, 1955. They also debated for PTA meetings and for various other groups. Standing: J. Stanke. Sitting: J. Wenzel, J. Brockway, B. Colby, Schatzka, C. Lyon. Standing: N. Schwanke, R. Pekowsky, A. Kruege J. Again trying to promote better school relations, the Student Council this year has worked with many problems. The large project chosen this year was to help the Clarion and Annual staffs buy the offset printing press by giving the organizations financial aid. The ten-member organization was fortunate to belong to the 7-C Conference Student Council, made up of all 7-C Conference schools. Our excellent advisor, Mr. Kohn, and the council, contributed to the success of the group by drafting a primary constitution for the Conference Council. The entire council attended the dinner meeting held at Adams- Friendship High School on January 24. Large money-making activities during the year included the pop and candy machines and the annual magazine campaign. CHEERLEADERS B. Tassler, G. Swader, H. Hammond, P. Swick, N. Fry, B. Pekowsky. The Cheerleaders were chosen by the student body at the beginning of the year to lead them in cheers and to boost the teams to victory. Due to much outside practice, the cheerleaders were able to put on an exhibi- tion of which their school could be proud. They not only cheered with their hands but with their hearts. In both good and bad times, the cheer- leaders were always there contributing their best to help their boys win. Pep rallies were held throughout the year not only for practice for the cheerleaders, but also to help exercise the lungs of the students. The efforts of the squad were not in vain—we had a yelling good season. - M , ♦ ••••• • . ■ • ' ••• , • ... • . • • •«. . ;• • ... The team, with high morale and a will to win, provided the home fans with an unblemished record. Due to fine coaching from both George Steffen and Verle Clark, the team showed good sportsmanship as well as the ability to win. No one player can be credited with the glory of winning. It took eleven fellows, playing their hearts out, to go through the entire season without suffering a loss. They swooped the West- field District tournament for the fifth championship in the last six years. They played hard all the way and at the same time displayed their fine sportsmanship throughout each game. Although they only placed third in the 7-C conference standings, they surprised everyone by defeating Mon- tello, Green Lake, and Plainfield in the Championship game.
