“
We, the Seniors of 1954, proudly present this year's edition of the PIONEER” with the hope that in future years it may bring back memories of many happy hours spent within these doors. THIS IS OUR STORY Our story begins and ends within one short year, but into it we have put a wealth of good times. Good, be- cause regardless of how they seem to us now, they all taught us a lesson which we may use in future years. For high school teaches many things besides the knowledge gained from books in the classroom. All of our many activities show us how to get along with other people, to share joys and troubles, and to solve our prob- lems together. In this volume of the Pioneer , we present the events of the past school year, and the people who made these events. This is truly a tale of effort on the part of all concerned. Our story this year shows that effort brings re- _ ward, for Westfield students were: -- greatly rewarded for their participa-: tion in many activities. This is our story----- HONORS M. Dahlke J. Hart- ling, C. Gohlke, G. Singer, Mr. Kohn, Advisor, B. Ham- mond, P. Fredrick, B. Lyon. This year's Student Council has been active in many ways. They had charge of the candy and pop machines and also the magazine sales campaign. Early in the year, four members attended a Student Council Conference in LaCrosse. They held a meeting with the faculty at which they tried to better things for the entire student body. Seated: V. Daye, D. Shurpit, C. Linaberry, L. King. Standing: A. Leach M Lewin, A. Kruger, V. Lachelt, S. Kopp, N. Swick, I. Buschke. Seated: Miss Chapman. Standing: Secretary, H. Russell; President, J. Stanke; Vice-President, J. Soiney; Treasurer, W. Johnson. Stories for students begin with the care of the books under the direction of the members of the Library Club and their advisor, Miss Chapman. The girls had com- plete charge of checking out books for students and also were in charge of keep- ing the library in order during certain hours. The girls made posters during book week to remind everyone of the impor- tance of books in school life. Our yearbook, the Pioneer, will help bring memories of 195 at W.H.S. Under the able guidance of the advisor, Mr. Brenholt, 2 staff members worked to make this production a success. Mr. Galle shot the students on two different occasions, using cameras an lights instead of deadly weapons. Putting the annual together proved to be a great deal of worl and two pair of scissors, four pencils, five bottles of glue, and twenty four people were completely worn out in the process. c 1 n % -i o M The monthly school story is published by the 13 mem- bers of the Clarion, our school paper, and their excellent ad- visor, Mr. Kohn. The Clarion furnished its readers with all interesting hap- penings of the school clubs and organizations. Because the advertising and sales do not cover the cost of publishing, the Clarion made and printed programs for all basketball and football games. Three members of the staff attended the Journalism Conference, held at the University of Wisconsin, where they learned many good tips on writing. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA Row 1: J. Weir, J. Musical Magic might well be the phrase used to de- scribe the sometimes serious, sometimes lighthearted tunes produced by the school band. Under the direction of Mr Johnson, this group once again delighted audiences at con- certs, programs, and sporting events throughout the year. In addition to playing for many local events, band mem- bers prepared for the music festival at Montello, where they competed for a spot in the state contest. STORIES IN SONG Row 1: P. Fredrick, J. Under the capable direction of Mr. Johnson, they created tales set to music for their own enjoyment and that of others. “The Blew Notes”, ourschoolorchestra furnished the delightful music for the after-the-game dances and also the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Their music was enjoyable and appreciated by all who heard and danced to it. Seated: Mr. Johnson, P. Fredrick, J. Selk, C. Gohlke. DANCE BAND Standing: S. Zuelke, J Hamilton, G. Singer, B. Lyon, J. The de- bate team, along with 9 other schools, competed in their first contest at Stevens Point. On March 1 2, 1 2 speakers com- peted in our league contest held at Westfield. Westfield again re- ceived fame as 7 members re- ceived A's to win the gold trophy for their school. Mr. Brenholt and Miss Johnson were co-supervisors of our 1953- 54 speech program. The play competed with Gray Bread for local honors and was chosen as the winner after much con- sideration. The characters in Fantasia were puppets and the four actors, under the excellent direction of Miss John- son, did a wonderful job of portraying them. The big day of the game began with a gala parade made up of floats with suggestions as to how to beat the Hilltoppers'. That evening Montello was crushed 41-6 by the Pio- neers. Queen Jane Reetz and King Jerry Michalek reigned over the victory dance. Dreamy melodies by Harold Ferron’s Orchestra formed a fitting con- clusion for the star-studded occasion. M. Buchholtz, G. The theme, Moonlight and Roses, was illustrated with trellises of climbing roses surrounding the gym. A large yellow moon provided the lighting. The music was played by Al Alverson and his orchestra. Our football team wound up the season with a third-place rating in the conference, which was a considerable improvement. Their performance showed very excellent work by Coach Huxtable and his boys. Our basketball story is one that will long be remembered by the students of Westfield High. Starting the season as an under-rated team, they surprised many others by defeating them. Under the expert guid- ance of our wonderful coach, Mr. Clark, their performance was always one of teamwork and fair play. Suffering defeat only once in a non- conference overtime, Clark's boys made their school proud. After copping the conference with a 12-0 record, the Pioneers went on to cop championship honors at the district tournament. Although they lost the playoff, they are to be congratulated for their fine work dur- ing the season. r-c c x x H ? Yells and songs provided the necessary school spirit backing our football and basketball teams to very successful seasons. Through the cooperation of the entire student body our six peppy cheerleaders did an outstanding job of organizing and leading the cheers. Due to much outside practice the cheerleaders were able to put on an exhibition of which their school could be proud. We, the Annual Staff, wish to take this opportunity to thank those business places who donated to this annual.
