Last fall before the opening of football season the student body elected Marilyn Ely, Bonnie Tassler, Donna Gray, and Virginia Krentz to lead them in their cheers for the coming school year. The cheerleaders proved they could do a swell job by introducing new cheers and keeping up the school spirit. Nice yelling, girls! 50 s iH, 9 SJL 4ftoc xy . Under the fine guidance of Coach Richard Huxtable this Junior Varsity squad will provide the nucleus for fine, future Pioneer Varsity squads. Westfield Cagers Win 2nd Place Honors in Red Hot District Tournament Play Finishing their season in a blaze of glory the local basketball team placed second to the Endeavor-Oxford team in the district tournament held at Westfield. The Pioneers defeated Wild Rose and Wautoma before bowing to the Oxen in the championship game. The Wild Rose game was very close, with the Pioneers edging out a 34-33 victory. The Wautoma battle was never in doubt, as the local team jumped to an early lead which they held throughout the contest. The final score of this game was 47-38. Little chance was given the Westfield team in the championship game with Oxen. The Pioneers provided quite a battle but fell short as the scoreboard indicated. The score was 58-51. Wild Rose copped consolation honors by defeating Port Edwards 56-51. The biggest upset of the tourney was the 67-40 win by the Oxen over Plainfield. Coach Verle A. Clark is to be complimented on the fine job of coaching he has done the past year. With only one regular returning from his last seasons championship team he still was able to mold a squad of boys that was able to place second in the tournament. Congratulations to him and his fine basketball squad! 56 ■■ Watch The Birdie! Many Events of Q. A. A.
