It's the Westfield High School Band. Every- day during the fourth hour period, music fills the halls, for that is the time when the band practices. Whenever there is a school activity the band is sure to be present. The highlight of the year was the Music Festival here at Westfield. We were represented in solos, ensembles, and concert groups. Last year Bonita Kietz- mann participated in the State Music Festival. The Music Department also presented a Minstrel Show and Spring Concert. REED SECTION! Row Is J. Krentz, R. Dahlke, S. Hanson. H. The Future Homemakers oa erica is an organization composed of girls who are working toward the goals of future homemakers. Gloria Messerschmidt. Susan Hamilton, Dorothy Henke, and Betty Schwanke took an active part in the program. Many of our girls exhibited and attended the state fair. Participation in the county fair included style review, Judging contests, and exhibits. The FHA won first prize on their float. Among the other functions of the FHA were: a district rally, which was held in Westfield, a radio broadcast, a Mother-Daughter party, demonstration contest, and conferring of degrees. 1C D. West, B. SENIOR BALL Rain nor snow could keep the seniors and their guests away from the Senior Ball given December 29, 1950. The seniors had spent several days at the high school decorating the gymnasium for the occasion; the Christ- mas tree was beautifully decorated with bright lights, angel hair and icicles. Tables were impressively dec- orated with candles, snowmen, and winter scenes. Herbie Breitzmann and his orchestra played the music for the Ball. 12 FOOTBALL 1st Row: A. Sohn, Manager; P. TAKES BIG 7-C CROWN The fighting Westfield Pioneers cinched the 7-C crown by beat- ing Omro, who was not consi- dered too strong a contender. The Pioneers played alert and aggressive football in winning the first clear championship in Westfield High School history. Westfield opened the campaign by trouncing Adams-Friendshlp V3-0. Next on the list was Port Edwards going down to defeat 21-6. Then came the big one, the Homecoming tilt with the powerful Wautoma Hornets. The Pioneers won this game with a score of 13-0. Playing terrific defensive football the Pioneers won over a stubborn Omro team 16-6. The one remaining game with Tri-High was canceled because of the polio outbreak. The title was given to West- field because they were the only undefeated team. The afternoon and evening of March I1 found the high school in the midst of its most exciting and successful local forensic contest in recent years. Twenty-five contestants appeared in the local meet, over half of whom were making their debut in the speech contest. The keen competition gave the Judge, Mr. Carroll Swenson, a real workout. A change in the League contest rules made it possible to pick two winners to represent the school in each of the seven speaking divisions. In the League contest, which will be held at Westfield on March 21, the following local contest winners will endeavor to add another trophy to the growing collection. They were selected on the basis of their ability to write articles and their ability to work cooperatively with the group in the many tasks Involved in the publication of a school paper. The Clarion was awarded a charter from Quill and Scroll, an Inter- national Honorary Society, which is located on the Northwestern Uni- versity Campus. General confusion followed as the students tried to find the various class rooms. One bright and sunny day in October the long await- ed day of torture arrived. InitiationiJ The class advisors were Miss Birkholz and Mr. Olson. The class offi- cers were Eugene Buchholz—President, Jack Mussey—Vice-President, Gloria Messerschmidt—Secretary, Audrey McMahon—Treasurer. Marian Kassien was selected from our class to be on the Student Council. The Freshman Class was highly represented in all activities. Thus ended our Freshman year. In the fall of 19 8 we were back in school as Sophomores. This year the Neshkoro students joined us. The class officers were Burley Daye— President, Walter King—Vice-President, Audrey McMahon—Secretary, Jack Mussey—Treasurer. Our class advisors were Miss Crosswaite and Mr. Hard- rath. We were well represented in all extra-curricular activities. Those who dropped out at the end of our Sophomore year were Herbert Jahnke, Verna Bengsch, Joe Robinson, Marilyn Wegert, and Pat Weiss. On September 6, we returned to good old WHS as Juniors. There were many exciting events during this year. One event during the year was the publishing of the Clarion with Audrey McMahon as Editor and Mr. Kohn as our advisor. Early in October we ordered our class rings. Everyone was sure that they were among the prettiest ever seen in Westfield Union Free High School. The biggest event of our Junior year was the Junior Prom. Our theme was Blue Moon with Harold Ferron furnishing the music. Audrey McMahon and Earl Chesebro reigned as King and Queen. The class officers this year were Walter King—President, Earl Chese bro—Vice-President, Hally Swader—Secretary, Claire Klusmeyer—Treasurer. The members on the Student Council were Burley Daye and Gordon Sybell. Miss Morton, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Hardrath were our class advisors. Those who dropped out of our class were Charlotte Robinson, Dean Son- nenberg, Alice Buchholz, and Jack Weir. The Seniors chose Audrey McMahon and Eugene Buchholz as outstanding girl and boy of the Junior Class. We shall always remember or never for- get What happened to our Clarion Staff picnic? On September 5. everyone was back in school anxious to get going again. Our happiest event of the year was initiating the Freshmen. Our class officers this year were Gloria Messerschmidt—President, Iona Jean Olson—Vice-President. Audrey McMahon—Secretary, Phyllis Hoeft Treasurer. Gloria Messerschmidt and Burley Daye represented our class on the Student Council. The Senior Class advisors this year were Mrs. Lehner and Mr. Clark. The date of the Senior Ball was December 29. The gym was decorated with tables around the edge of the floor and a huge beautifully decorated Christmas tree. The dates March 28 and 29 were the dates of the school play, Mother Is A Freshman , in which many Seniors participated. The week of May 27 through June 1 was very busy with final Senior activities—Baccaleureate—May 27, Class Night—May 29, and Graduation, June 1.
