The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of farm boys studying vocational agriculture. The purposes of this organization are to develop complete aggressive, rural, and agri- cultural leadership, to strengthen the confidence of the farm boy in himself and his work, and to create more interest in the intelligent choice of farming occupations. Activities carried on by the Y estfield chapter of F. F. A., this year consisted of a stand at the Horsemen's Festival, a booth and stand at the county fair, exhibits in the local post office, selling football and basketball pencils, selling garden seeds and flower seeds, treating seed grain, sponsoring agricultural programs, spon- soring Father and Son Banquets, and the purchasing of pure bred ani- mals to be used in productive enterprises. 18 FH.A 1st Row—M. We believe that the girls' health, co-operation, and willingness to sac- rifice influence the future of the homes of our country. Our club joined the national F. H. A. organization this year. Under the guidance of Miss Milliren, with the leadership of our offic- ers, a very interesting program was worked out. Some of the years activities were: hot dog sales at football games, sponsoring banquets, and social and business meetings. 19 BIOLOGY CLUB 1st 2nd 3rd Row—H. Hintz, J. Slowey, K. Dunn, L. Schultz, V. Dramatics Club members also receive valuable training for the Junior and senior class plays. 22 STUD EOT COUUCJL 1st Row—G. Loose, M. Russell, M. Winkler, W. Mortenson, R. Messer- schmidt, B. The Student Council of Westfield High School, a body of students selected from the classes and organizations, is dedicated to living cooperatively in the high school. A student council does not mean self-government,but it does mean student participation in government. The student council has undertaken many projects. Some of the major ones are the supervision of the study hall, presenting programs and parties, and helping in the conducting of intra-mural affairs. Since this is our first year, everything isn’t expected to run perfectly but in a few years the benefits of a student council will be appreciated. 23 FOREnSJCS r ORATORY John Smith, Harold Schauer HUMEROUS DECLAMATIONS 1st Row—B. Miller FOOTBALL SSASOII The loss of nine regulars from the 1938 football team made the task of molding a winning eleven for the 1939 grid season a difficult task indeed. Inexperience proved too large a handicap, and so West- field's football record showed but two victories as against four setbacks. However, next fall looks very encouraging indeed, as a dozen lettermen will be back. The highlight of the past pigskin season was Westfield's fine showing against a highly favored Adams- Friendship eleven. Westfield lost, but only because of a long run following a pass interception. The record for the season was as follows: Westfield 19 Berlin B 0 Westfield 0 Wisconsin Dells 20 Westfield 13 Mauston 18 Westfield 0 Adams Friendship 6 Westfield 7 Portage B 2 Westfield 6 Mosinee 26 26 VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAH 1st Row—G. Gardow, N. Christensen, J. Conant, M. Loose,G. Klingbiel, Leo Parker 2nd Row—R. Borsack, Manager, D. Waldo, Les Parker, D. Miller, H. Roney, K. Furhman, Manager Lack of experience coupled with an epedemic of injuries wrecked havoc with the 1939-40 Westfield High School basketball team. As a result, the twice defending champions finished in a tie for fifth place in the conference with Montello. In tournament play the team was distinctly off, losing to Pardeeville and Cambria, while chalking up a lone victory over Oxford. Next year's prospects are encouraging, though, as only one man will be lost through graduation—Captain Milton Loose.
