Originally scheduled for Iune graduation was postponed until the following day due to inclement weather. Partly had begun their high school careers at the school before going to the new one, their graduation linked the memories of the past with the hopes for 4 .L Mi- X63 CLASS HISTORY 1976 As the Class of 1976, the Bicentennial Class, we have spent four important years together, from September 1972 until june 1976. On September6, 1972, we were the last class to enter the old Westfield High as itty-bitty freshmen. After our first few days of getting lose in the hallways, we were prepared to start our high school careers. On a night filled with shaving cream, bobbing for apples and pushing peanuts across the floor with our noses, we were initiated by the upperclassmen. President Debra O'Shaughnessy led us into the year. In january we presented our first One-Act Play. The following month brought us the Charity Dance Compeition. Bill Benjamin and Bridget Dowd were chosen to represent our class. Finally on june 15, 1973 we said goodbye to the familiar Smith Avenue School and to double sessions. On September 6, 1973, we entered the new Westfield High School. It was the first time in our history that all four classes attended school on the same session. As silly-silly sphomores, we felt we belonged. With Bill Benjamin as our new president, we chose jonathan Livingston Seagull as our class mascot, and our class colors blue and white. Following the dedication and open house of the new school in the fall, we began to prepare our second One-Act Play. On january 7, 1974, the mayor's inauguration was held in the WHS gymnasium. We were proud on-lookers as our class sponsor, Mr. Rhodes, became mayor. We finished the rest of our years under the guidance of Mr. Metcalf. Later on that year Bob johnson and Chris Funaro represented our class in the Charity Dance. On june 19, we were the first sophomores to receive our class rings: we now had the real things, symbols of our importance to Westfield High. We began our year as jolly-jolly juniors on September 5, 1974. We were upperclassmen now. Bill Benjamin was re-elected president. In the One-Act Play Competition that year we were triumphant. We won Best Costume Award, Best Scenery Award, and most important, Best Play Award. The Bicentennial Class was gaining status. The couple chosen to lead us in the Charity Dance was Sean Pierce and Ioanne Mutti. With their help our class did a magnificent job. May brought the jr.-Sr. Prom, Pieces of April, which was held at Wycoff Country Club. Then the end of the school year came and we sadly said goodbye to the Class of 1975. Now it was all up to us. The same class officers were elected and in early September we began our hectic senior year, joined by Senior Exchange Student Karouko Ono and Iunior Exchange Student Dana Scheel. Our first project as mighty-mighty seniors was the week long Magazine Drive. We surpassed our goal and raised over S16,000.00, the largest amount ever. In October, class members dressed in a variety of costumes to attend the Masquerade. january brought us our final attempt at the One-Act Plays. Our controversial play was a tremendous effort for which we received Best Scenery Award. In February, thanks to King Io Cassiday and Queen Kathy Fischer, their court, and fine class support, we collected over 5800.00 and the senior couple was crowned at the dance. After a class vote, Bronze Tablet Finalists Sandra Andersen, Bill Benjamin, Chris Funaro, and Pat Mikelis were selected from 45 nominees. On May 17, Dancing in the Moonlight, the Ir.-Sr. Prom was held at Chez Iosef. Later in the month 92 students received certificates of membership and gold stones at the National Honor Society Banquet. This same month class songs were chosen. We finished our senior year on Iune 4. Our last day, named by the underclassmen as Kiss-A-Senior Day, with our T-shirts, garbage bags of confetti and the motorcade around the city was a perfect ending to our high school years. The Senior Banquet and Post Banquet Party on Iune 7, at which the class ballot was revealed, allowed us one last chance to get together before graduation. After going to homeroom for the last time on Iune 10, we went to the gym to honor all students who received awards. We were proud on-lookers as the Bronze Tablet was presented to Bill Benjamin. The next day, june 11, our expected gradua- tion date, we were filled with great joy and anxious anticipation, rain was predicted. That morning we went before our younger classmates and they paid a fine tribute to us. The remainder of the morning we spent practicing at the old High School football field under hot sun. That evening severe thunder storms were predicted and graduation was postponed. The next day was beautiful as 413 students received diplomas. Now it is our turn to say goodbye to the students and teachers we are leaving behind. We leave with one special wish for them and for ourselves -that all may learn to hold fast to their dreams, for if dreams die life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Lori I. With a complete turnahout from last year's dismal 1-9 record, the Bombers attained a sparkling 8-2 overall mark. This was the best season at WHS since 1961, when the team fin- ished with an 8-1 slate and won the division title. Senior Bill Burke was the anchor-man ofthe team, ending an outstanding season with 122 points ta Western Mass high for the seasonj and 1326 total yards. Other outstanding per- formances were seen in Senior quarterback Kevin Morris, Bob Iohnson, and Rich Gaylord, and Iunior Bill Kieda and Mark Dufva. The IV team, under the direction of Coach Nummy, also had an excellent season, finish- ing 6-0. Mr. Wallas and Mr. Rosso look on. The agony of defeat! Bombers Mop Up!! Cathedral In Pre-Turkey Deluge A rain-soaked Plumb Field set the backdrop for the annual Thanksgiving contest between Cathedral and Westfield. After two grueling hours of pushing, slipping, and sloshing, the Bombers came home victorious, edging the Panthers 22-18. Faithful Bomber fans braved the adverse conditions to watch the Bomber machine prove what they were really made of. The key to the Bomber's success came from the spectacular running of Bill Burke, who carried for 161 yards and all three of West- field's touchdowns. Westfield picked up the game winning points early in the second-half. A 26-yard run by Sophomore Mark Dufva, a Kevin Morris toss to Don Dumas, and finally a 3-yard drive by Burke put the game out of Cathedral's reach. Harriers Have Disappointing Year Discouraging is the word that sums up this year's Cross County season. The team, consisting of fourteen members, found the competition tough as they struggled through a winless season of 0-9. The one bright spot of the year occurred when Iunior Kevin Pulaski broke the West- field High School record for a 2.6 mile run, by doing the course in 14 minutes, 15 seconds. For his efforts, Kevin was named the team's MVP. Though a young sport, Cross Country con- tinues to grow in Westfield. Hopefully, more people will participate next fall, and more spectators will come out to the Sportsmen's Club to watch the team's progress. The bombers relied on their strong defense, led by Captain Gerry Stone and goalie Mark Chistolini to carry them through the season. Steve Golas provided the main offensive punch along with Ed Fitzgerald, Kevin Mur- phy, and Paul Iohnson. Other outstanding efforts were given by Iohn Hibert, Ken Smigel, Ed Irzyk, and Iim Vasquez. The I.V. kickers had a highly successful year, capping a superb 12-3-1 season with the City Cup Championship. Goalie Mark Chistolini was helpless in his attempt to get a lazy roller that caught a goalpost and deflected into the net. Stellar performances were given by many of the Bomber booters, including Steve Golas, who converted a penalty kick late in the open- ing period for the lone Westfield score. Two days before, Westfield pushed their City Cup Tournament off to a successful start, with a 2-1 victory over Westfield Voke, giving them the right to move into the finals with St. Mary's. Captain Gerry Stone scored the tie- breaking game winner for the Bombers in the 4th quarter on a direct kick from outside the penalty area. The Westfield I.V.'s outran St, Mary's, 7-0, to capture the I.V. City Cup Championship. Goals were scored by Barry Iordan, Rafael Burgos, Howie Rose, Glenn Wisniowski, Dave Laprise and Dan Trant. Varsity Field Hocke The Girls' Field Hockey Team, despite much effort and enthusiasm, finished their season with a rather disappointing record of 3-3-4. The main cause for Westfield's difficulty this season was their failure to move the ball and get untracked in the scoring department. Iunior Steve Wezdenko, was named MVP as the Bomber's scoring leader. Tri-Captains Mark Fisher, Mike Rauseo, and Gerry Stone spearheaded the defensive attack. Senior Iim Warner was having a fine offensive season, and was a leading rebounder for the Bombers when an unfortunate ankle injury kept him out of action for the last month and a half of the season. Though the Iunior Varsity squad finished with a 5-14 slate, this record does not give a true indication of their hard-nosed style of play. Mr. Rosso was honored at an all-school assembly, which included such guests as Superintendent of Schools Brian Holloran and Mayor Rhodes. This marks the first time that an A.D. of the Year Award has gone to anyone in Western Mass. Of the honor, Rosso said: I don't believe this should be an individual thing. I get excellent co-operation from the superintendent, the School Committee, and all the coaches here. I think they should all be proud. Since Mr. Rosso's emergence as an Athletic Director in 1957, he has been largely responsi- ble for the expansion of our interschool sports programs. intramural activities, and in recent years, girl's athletics. Baseball ine Are Pleasant Surprise The WHS Varsity Baseball Team improved upon last year's 6-16 record with a respectable 6-7 mark in the Valley League this spring. Coach Bill Ensign attributed this year's suc- cess to the fine performances of the under- class men. Iunior hurler Dave Barnard led the team with a fine record of 6-2. Iunior Iim Andrews was praised for his offensive con- tributions to the team. Consistent defensive efforts by Seniors Mike Rauseo and Iohn Kuc- harski were noted also by Ensign as factors in the team's winning season. Though only 5-13, this year, the IV's attitude and dedication remained high throughout the year. Coach Tom Sgroi remarked that the defense performed well, but that offensive punch needed to win was lacking. Coach Ensign will be working with many of these underclassmen next season, and from this year's experience, there are fine possibili- ties for an even better baseball season. Outstanding contributions were made by Senior Co-Captains Bob Callahan and Ieff Schweitzer. Callahan finished as high scorer with 26 goals and 6 assists for 32 points, and Schweitzer added 4 goals and 2 assists for 6 points. Head coach Ron Reopel pointed out that this was the best record of a boy's track team in many years at Westfield High. The team's strength was in its seniors, as they scored a total of 333 seasonal points. Tim Sexton and Dean Hoppe combined for 210 points 1105 eachl, and Iunior Ed Gifford took top scoring honors with 11454 points. In the Western Mass Track Competition, the Bombers placed in five events. The 440 relay team, consisting of Mark Kohlrusch, Iohn Fisher, Mark Dufva, and Bob Pettengill, placed fifth, as did Al Madera in the triple jump, and Dean Hoppe in the shotput. Golfers Attain First Place The Bomber Golf Team capped another noteworthy season this year with a 13-2 record. In a game where individual competition plays a large part, Westfield saw some fantas- tic performances in their linkmen. Steve Mihalek shot a two-over-par 74 to win the Western Mass High School Individual Golf Tournament, edging a Chicopee golfer by one stroke. He is the third member of his family to qualify for the state tourney. Darrell Pasci- nella shot an 81 in the same tournament, but missed qualifying, as the cut-off was 78. Westfield High was also among eleven teams named to compete in the Western Mass Large School Golf Team Championship in Chicopee. The future of golf at Westfield High looks bright under the capable direction of Coach Milton Reach. Skiers Displa Fine Effort Though blessed with plenty of snow for the greater part of the winter, the Westfield High Ski Team found the area competition very tough, losing most of their meets this season. Westfield, despite its losing record, showed much talent on the slopes. M.V.P. Dough Sulli- van and Sophomore Iim Moltenbrey led the Bombers as top place finishers in several meets. Rounding out the starting team were Seniors Gary Crise, Chris Spellman, Al Neveu, and Gayfe Syrenne, and Iunior Maureen Syr- enne. A high school ski team consists of from 10- 15 members, but only eight may race in each meet. The meet is scored by combining the four top times of each team, the total repre- senting the team's final score. The team with the lowest score is the winner. Softball , 'fl s 'Ns The Girls' Softball Team, under the direction of Ms. Ioyce O'Donnell, completed a successful season with a 12-6 record. The Bomberettes also advanced into the tough Valley League Competition where they cap- tured third place.
