Placing second in the valley league after some close games, we were one of the teams that received an invitation to the Assumption Tournament. In the first game of this tournament we registered a win against Mission High of Roxbury 40-35 which set a record of being the lowest scoring game in tournament history. St. Peters of Worcester was our second opponent and were overcome 83-52 setting the record as the highest scoring game ever in tourney play. Also in this game Dick Beach, set the highest individual record of 32 points. ln the final game against Smith Academy, we were defeated in the final seconds 56-54. However, our individual players received many awards. Dick Beach and Skippy Puza were chosen as members of the All-Star team, and Tom Delnickas won honorable mention. Al Keeling won the Bunny Batelle Good Sportsmanship Award, winding up a season with top notch ball handling. Wcurking with a squad of mostly new members, Coach jack Cronin was quite pleased with their showing at our various meets. Captain Ray Childs was the outstanding member this year receiving the Roderick Tyler Track Award as the outstanding trackster. Seniors who showed well during the season were John Meacham, Bob Veronesi, Al Rising, Don Puza and Bob Prouty. Entered in the Western Mass. tourney meet, jack Leavitt reached the finals in the shot put, a really promising member for next years team. n ,L 81 f' Q i GOLF TEAM In spite of spirit and enthusiam, the 1957 golf team staggered to a disastrous season. The de- feats came by close margins, but sparked by jack Dalton, Larry Marsh, and the other team mem- bers we will be expected to do better next year. TENNIS For the number of students who participate in tennis, Westheld has a good team. Coach Gammons expects to have an outstanding team within a few years. In the 1957 season we played IO matches with fair results. Those who tried their hardest on this years team were Seniors: Pete Ackermann, George Bird, Captain, Bruce Woodfcnrd, Harold Ralph, junior Con Coffin: Sophomores: Larry Marsh and Cave Aldrich, Freshmen: Lean Dens- more and Dick Heffernan. One thing the team had to be proud of was the fact that two of the boys on the squad went into the second round in the Western Mass. High School Tournament which took place in Springneld. Reaching the finals were Harold Ralph and Goerge Bird, Captain, who paced this years team. BOYS' SKI TEAM Our boys' ski team was totally composed of underclassmen this year with the exception of their advisor, Mr. Gammons, who should at least be rated as an uperclassman. To keep in shape and practice their skiing skills there were after- noons at Lambsons' and Saturdays at Blandford Cweather permitting, of coursel. The only meet was the Berkshire Interscholas- tic at Pittsfield State Forest. Here our competi- tion team placed eighth out of ten of the best private and public schools. This was not too bad for a green team. The competitive team mem- bers are john Brownlee, john Teubner, Richy Vincent, Terry Beauregarde, Doug Adams and john Parent. Bill Mitnick suffered a knee injury thus eliminating him from competition. Other members are Austin Morris, Thomas Mann, Gor- don and Robert Smith, Frank Lary and John Schultz. GIRLS SPORTS GIRLS SKI TEAM I uc to the lick of snow this pist winter the girls ski club hasnt been too active They havc been under the leadership of Miss Freimg As it IS the first time there has been a girls ski club at the high school we expect that next year will present more active results from the girls The few times when they did go out there was lots of fun had by all Our skitrs are Sally Dalton Nxncy Taggart Clrol Kuznicki Mary Pothrer Donna Barnoski Sally Jones Pam Wlrren Bttsy Wehrly Gail Ensign Barblra Zielienski Helen Allyn Donna Miemrec and Judy Burr TENNIS TEAM This year marked the second season that the girls' tennis team was organized. Sched- uled matches with Maclluflie School for Girls and Greenfield High did not find us on top or in the winners circle, but our efforts of this year and last year are building our tennis team up, so that leader Miss Joyce Freitag has a bright outlook for future years. Sally Wyman, Jane Wzlckerbarth, Judy Norman, and Fran Chapman were leading net players. , M23 :sl , if H. Q-ii-. GIRLS' SPORTS Always seeming to be left in the shuffle behind Varsity Sports and what have you, intra-mural sports receive little interest. For those who do show up enjoy these after school recreations with Jan Riley, girls' Physical Director, refereeing and super- vising Spirit and enthusiasm prevail at these field hockey games, basketball games and volleyball games.
