J f 1 if HERBERT KITTREDGE DR. ABERNATHY A DR. CRUTSINGER W.H.S. 1855-1955 If the bricks of Westfield High School had the power of speech, they would re- late a very interesting history. W.H.S. has not always been in existence as thought by students who enter through its portals. In fact, it started as an Academy which was dedicated in 1800 by Rev. joseph Lathrup, Pastor of the First Church in West Springfield. Mr. Peter Starr was the first preceptor of the Academy. For fifty years, W'esteld Academy was the pride and joy of the town and was ranked as one of the nest academies in Massachusetts. It existed as an Academy for boys and private tutorship could be obtained by girls who wished higher education. But due to lack of endowment funds and from an increas- ing interest in public schools, it began to decline. When the town High School was es- tablished in 1855, the old Academy yield- ed to the fate which was rapidly overtak- ing its brother-academies. The first public High School was built at the present site of Intermediate School. This building served as the High School for seventy-five years until 1930, when a new Westfield High School was opened on Smith Avenue.
