ABERNATHY A DR. CRUTSINGER W.H.S. 1855-1955 If the bricks of Westfield High School had the power of speech, they would re- late a very interesting history. W.H.S. has not always been in existence as thought by students who enter through its portals. In fact, it started as an Academy which was dedicated in 1800 by Rev. joseph Lathrup, Pastor of the First Church in West Springfield. Mr. Peter Starr was the first preceptor of the Academy. For fifty years, W'esteld Academy was the pride and joy of the town and was ranked as one of the nest academies in Massachusetts. It existed as an Academy for boys and private tutorship could be obtained by girls who wished higher education. But due to lack of endowment funds and from an increas- ing interest in public schools, it began to decline. When the town High School was es- tablished in 1855, the old Academy yield- ed to the fate which was rapidly overtak- ing its brother-academies. The first public High School was built at the present site of Intermediate School. This building served as the High School for seventy-five years until 1930, when a new Westfield High School was opened on Smith Avenue. Some of the prominent men who served as administrators of Westfield High School include: Mr. William A. Smith, 1855- l858g Mr. and Mrs. Clapp, 1858-18623 Mr. H. H. Bingham, 1862-1865gMr.C.D. Mills, 1864-18655 Mr. E. H. Booth, l866g Mr. Abner E. Gibbs, 1867-18823 Mr. Hen- ry Dame, 1883-18845 Mr. J. D. Welch, 1884-l886g W. M. McLaughlin, 1887- 18893 Mr. Herbert W. Kittredge, 1890- 19283 Dr. Thomas J. Abernathy, 1928- l94l, 1946-l947g Dr. George M. Crut- singer, 19-'15-l945g Mr. Ralph W. Haskins, 19-18-19553 Mr. G. Fred Ensworth, 1955 .. 6 l RALPH W. HASKINS G. Driver's Education began in September 1952 at W.H.S. with Mr. john W, Cronin as instructor. The course was urged by the service organizations of West- field which felt there was a need for educating the teen-agers in the way of the road. W.H.S. receives a dual-controlled car from Fenton's, a local automobile dealer. To be eligible for the Driver's Education course, students must be at least sixteen years of age and must obtain written permission from their parents. Driver's Education comes under an act of the Massachusetts Legislature. The law requires twenty classroom hours plus a minimum of six hours behind-the-wheel instruc- xx! If this course is completed satisfactorily, a person receives his license and a certificate enabling him to receive a 1596 reduction on overall insurance rates. So far, the Drivers Education course has proved very successful. A total of 319 pupils have taken the course. The teen-agers of W.H.S. are really interested in learn- ing the fundamental concepts of safety through class- room study and actual training behind the wheel in the dual-controlled car. The number of automobile acci- dents by teen-agers has decreased since the course was founded. The record can still be bettered, if we re- member The life you save may be your own. Next year's returning players hold promise for a strong, well-balanced Valley League team. Among the returning players will be Co-Captain Wayne Damron, Brent Ferriter, Ray Ferriter, Ray Childs, john Gros, Gordon Blood, Torn Delnickas, and Tom Laudato in the backfieldg with Co-Captain Len Puza, Bill Tenero, Don Schultz, Gerry Prince, Monroe David in the line. Who did this heavy sticking? johnny Enko, angular third-sacker, proved the steadiest man at the plate, yhile Red Kowalczyk, and jack Lis, and later Ron Reopel, blasted long hits for the cause. An excellent all-round team, Westheld was able to tighten its defences and sharpen its pitching when, late in the season, the run production fell off. Lanny Saidak proved a glue-fingered second baseman, while the outfield was amazingly hole-proof and fleet. A short, canny southpaw named Billy Mayhew was the outstanding Bomber hurler, winning 7 straight in the regular season. That extra bit of strength every good team needs turned up in the arms of two Sophomore pitchers, Pete Griffin and Bob Piper. Carl Bednarsky, Bill Tenero, and catcher Bob 'Hebert came through with timely hits as the surprising Westheld team walked away with the Valley and City League titles. In a post-season playoff for the Western Mass. crown, Cathedral nosed out the scrappy Bomber nine by a 5-l count. All in all, a terrihc championship baseball team left students in the W.H.S. buzzing with excitement during the 1954 season. FIC TRACK 1954 ll W Qi '44 LJ Q' Q f 1 U Z fffi T7 X f ... . Ernie has spent many years as track coach and is rightly known as Mr. Track. The 1954 season consisted of seven meets. Our record was Eve wins, four in dual meets and one as Pentagonal at West Springfield. We placed second behind Springfield Trade in a Qudrangular meet at West Side and third in the Western Mass. Westfield was more than fortunate in having out- standing boys as Hank Lane, Red Kowalczyk, Ronnie Smith, Stan Herman, Al Rehor, joe Burek, Dave Lawrence and many others. Red Kowalczyk, as we all know, was an outstand- ing athlete and placed second to none as a dash man, Red won both the 100 yard and 220 yard dash in the Western Mass. For 1955 we have many good men returning, Wayne Damron, Ray Childs, Brent Ferriter, Joe Dalton, Joe Burek, and Al Rehor, SKIING The unpredictable pilft of New England weather showed itself again this year by leaving this area snow- less most of the winter. The Ski Team took it in stride and made a good showing nevertheless. Skiing for Westheld were the standout Co-Captains, Walt Neff and Stu Teubner, Jack Rigby, Ralph Burgess, john Brownlee, and Dean Ball. In the first meet against the Deerfield junior Varsity at Snow Mountain, West- field was beaten by a close margin of 94.5 to 90. Stu Teubner had the fastest time of the day in the slalom. The next meet was the Berkshire Interscholastics, against a field of 13 schools, in slalom. cross country, and downhill racing. Walt Neff was Sth in a field of 55 in the slalom, The team was third among the partici- pating high school. The last meet was a three-way slalom-downhill with Holderness School J.V.'s and Manchester High at Plymouth, N.H. The Westheld team were guests of Holderness for the three day meet. Walt Neff took first place in the slalom, while our skiers as a team placed second, after a close contest with Holderness for first place. Skiing at Westheld High has become a popular sport, and Vlestfield is becoming noted for its winning teams coached by Mr. Gammons. 'W-Ri., 4-D . Q- .4-bs ,vt IL Q . 4 , if . ' f A4 I ,Q .3 i' ' 1 1 !
