Often it is said, however, that we cannot look forward without also reviewing the past. We, the staff of this 1953 Gammadion, have tried to bring back and preserve some of those precious memories of friends and events which fill each individual life, that they might serve as keys to the past. It is with the sincerest effort to present you with these keys that we give you this legend of memories, your Gammadion of I953. A gammadion isa cross formed by four capitalgammas, the third letter of the Greek alphabet, and signifying well-being and quality. This Gammadion is our cross of the heights of ioy and the depths of sadness which we have shared. lt is a portal through which we may view these past years together. Nowas we open another door of life and go our separate waysinto the vast world before us, we hope that through this Gammadion the memories ofthe past will be complete, and the key to the future perfect. THE JUNIOR CLASS The class of '54 is now learning how to use our new-found key in our tasks to our advant- age. Working faithfully to distinguish the class as one of prominence are Miss McMahon, our class sponsor: our officers: John Plummer, Presidentp Christopher Armstrong, Vice Pres- iclentp Joanne Kelleher, Secretaryi and Jo Ann Jerr, historian: and Judy Anderson, Joanne Kelleher, Edward Osowski, and Ronald Wind, who are serving tirelessly on the Student Council in our behalf. The arrival of the Junior class rings was probably our greatest thrillof the year, although we also won the One-Act Play Contest with The Farmers Daughter . Our class selected maroon and white as our class colors and the red and white rose as our flower. We accept the challenge of the future is our chosen motto which we intend to fulfill. Our key has helped us to learn that our effort put into any task can make that task a pleasant and rewarding one . 49 :F ' Ii: fixff ' TSW 7 -ff, gi- W., Q ,, , K 3 5 I ,515 I Q Q 2 3 I f W'vf . k y if Q , 23? The duties of the council include: directing the cafeteria traffic, bringing the problems and suggestions of the students to the attention of the proper authorities, running class and student council elections, keeping the Service W records, and sponsoring various activities here at Westfield High such as the One-Act Play Contest, the selling of P.T.A. pencilsfor the Scholarship Fund, selling pins, confetti, flowers, etc. atthe football games, and the direction of the March of Dimes Drive each year. This yeara very successful dance was puton for thisdrive and the homeroom collections by the council members put the school far over its goal. Christmas angels were sold by the council for foreign relief and aid. The council members also expand their knowledge and leadership by attending conventions and meetings at different high schools which influence them toward the betterment of our school. The membership requirements for the Student Council are only a minimum of C average and membership in the respective classes. Four members and the class president make up the delegations from each class. BUNIBS AWAY 0 ,, 4 B2 A3 lv RP The i952 Westfield High School eleven breezed througha rugged nine games sched- ual in sterling fashion, ending up with an enviable 7 won 2 lost record . This record once again brought the Bombers to the gridiron supremacy they have so often known and was the best season since that of the undefeated Peanut Bowl Champs of I949. Spearheading the Westfield attack were Capt. Bob King and Red Kowalczyk, both unanimous choicesfor All-Western Mass. King, playing tackle and linebacker, displayed the spirit and aggressiveness of all true leaders. His daring work was un- doubtoble a hugh factor in bringing the Bombers out on top and is one of the reasons he should be considered one of the best linemen Westfield has ever produced. Kowal- czyk, the Red and Black's pile-driving fullback, put on some of theflashiestdisplays of ball -carrying to be seen in this section in a long time. Gebo O'Brien was an- other vital cog in the Bomber machine. His determined style typlified the Red and Black's gameness and his hard driving iaunts were oftentimes the key of Westfield's attack. Buster Damron at quarterback, Harry Storzok and Whitey Hepburn shared the halfback positions with O'Brien, Johnny Enko and Dick Curran at ends, Jack Sugal- ski, Ronnie Beach, and Joe Burek at tackle, Dick Delnickas and Billy Puza at guard, and Stan Herman at center round outa Westfield High School football squad that was second only to West Springfield s powerhouse in Western Mass circles ., 'iffy' an k.-Lan!-,QQ Q Cheer for the Couch! 66 W D QQ E l S I T I I Cheer for the Team! sf' ., WO N LOST PERCE NTAG E 'Va l ley League G ll ' in If OPPONENT Enfield Westfield Trade High Cathedral Holyoke St. Mary's 'Chicopee Classical Turners Falls Northampton Greenfield Enfield Agawam Holyoke St. Mary's Chicopee Northampton Westfield Trade High Turners Falls Cathedral Greenfield WHS 48 62 38 54 73 57 58 58 47 31 46 45 47 46 59 60 77 62 51 50 9 1 1 473 GFTTSS . IIASKHBAH The T952-53 Westfield High School basketeers got off to a rather unimpressive start, losing 6 out of their first TO contests. Four of those games were lost by a margin of 3 points or less. This ill-fated start did not get the boys down however, as they came back in sterling fashion in the final halfof the campaign to finish with a season record of 9 wins against ll losses. Their 5 and5 record in Valley League play was Second only to Greenfield and Holyoke. The Red and Black showed some of the most determined spiritand aggressiveness seen in recent years and led by Capt. Bob King were truly a tribute to Westfield High. Kinger wasa real leader, pacing his mates all the way and displaying a firm initiative that brought the Bombers asuccessful season. His outstanding rebound work paved the path to many triumphs. Dick Curran did a terrific job at the center post, controlling the boards and connecting freely with a well-aimed hook shot. Pete Butler was another member of this '53 quintet who did well. Butler, a sharpshooting forward, led his mates inthe scoring column and his passes were the key to many scoring drives. Gebo O'Brien, the 'holler guy' of this group, was a real spark plug and a driving playmaker. Johnny Enko performed well at guard, hitting time after time on outside sets and running one-handers. Red Kowalczyk completes the starting group. The fiery redhead was Cl tremendous asset---clearing the boards and rebounding with telling effect. Coach Bill Jenkins, in his second year at Westfield, directed the boys to a successful, though mediocre, season and his work in polishing out the flaws in indeed praiseworthy. 82 3 . f f N r 11 'bt' YE Q' NS! The T952 edition of Westfield High's baseball squad compiled a not so outstanding record of 6 wins and 9 losses. Despite this mediocre showing the '52 Bombers left many incidents that will be long remembered by every loyal Bomber fan. Probably most distinct in our minds will be the memory of the slugging of Co- captain George Bardo Kelleher fhe clouted the ball at a .420 clipl. ln particular, the work of Bob King, Chet Lis, Eddie Bonini, and Rick Baker left little to be desired, and the tremendous spirit and hustle of the squad was very instrumental in winning. The work of Co-captains, Bonini and Kelleher was impressive, to say the least, and paved the way to a very colorful, if not successful, season. Coach Fran Rosso deserves a great deal of credit for directing such a team as were the 1952 baseballers. Not once, even when they were several runs in the rear and their chances of winning slim, did the Bombers break their hustling stride. members of the squad had any actual previous experience under fire The loss of George Kelleher, Eddie Bonini, Rick Baker, Bob Agan and Dick Mellen will without any doubt, be sorely noticed in '53, Sure, errors and mistakes were made, but that is to be expected when only five I but, nevertheless, with such standouts as next year's Co-captains Chet Lis and Bob King, Doc Koziol, Johnny Enko, Red Kowalczyk, Ronnie Jackson, Paul Hadley, and Billy Puza returning, Coach Rosso has the makings of a star-studded squad, that, with Lady Luck on their side, might very well be molded into Western Mass. IINNIS Either Fate or Lady Luck still seems to be opposed to the Westfield High racquetmen as their seasons record shows a sad looking total of seven losses against a single win. Such standouts as Captain .lack Klaubert, Johnny Arenstam, John Feltus, and Ronnie Wind did much, but not quite enough, to bring the Bombers out of the depths. Coach Gammons is to be greatly admired and should take a genuine pride for having done his best to mold a good team out of the little material he had to work with. This year, with most of our members returning things look on the brighter side and who knows, the Bombers might well possess the experience and ability of a winning combination. XX X 7 X Q vi! The Westfield High School Track squad encountered nediocre success during the l952 campaign, By topping all comers in the Valley League Meet, and by placing second in a quadrangular event, the charges of Coach Ernie Morrill once again established themselves asa very game and spirited combine, despite the handicap of general inexperience. There are two or three fellows whose feats in the individual events places them well above the many. Take Harry Storozok as an example. This fleet Westfield High sprinter practically tore up the cinder path with an enviable record of six first in only seven starts in the 440 yard dash. Eddie Hepburn was another sprinter who attained a high mark of achievement during the '52 campaign. This speedy lad was most prominent in the IOO yard and 220 yard dashes. One of the most surprising preformances of the past season was turned in by George Bardo Kell- eher. After iust two weeks of practice the likable Senior preformed in the Western Mass. Track Meet. Throwing the iavelin for the first time in actual competition, Kelleher hurled it l56 feet to win the championship in that department. Throwing the iavelin that distance is, in itself,q rare feat: but throwing the iavelin l56 feet on the first throw in competition is incredable. Others who contributed much to the Bomber's cause included Capt. Tommy Leonard, Champ Morris, Gebo O'Brien, Nip Brown, Digger Bates, Ronnie Smith, Gerry Dougherty, Tommy Corey, Allan Woodruff, Jack Naughton, and Jim Woodruff. The only setback inflicted on this squad came at the hands of West Springfield. 86 LEFT TO RIGHT BACK ROW Stu Teubncr Leon Pothrer Coach Gammons Capt Bob Mossucco Ronme Smnh Buster Damron and Eddre Osowskr FRONT ROW Jrmmy Parent and Pete Krmball For the furst tnme nn Westfleld Hugh s hlstory skung has been recognlzed as a competltlve sport wrth a letter award Those takrng part rn the ska meets unclucle Capt Bob Mosucco one of the better skiers In Western Mass circles Pete Kumball Stu Teubner, Ronnie Smith Jlmmy Parent Eddre Osowsks Leon Pothrer, Jack Rrgby Tommy Grllus Barbara Burr and Buster Damron The Bombers took part In 3 contests whlch Included the down hull and slalom events They rolled overWllluston IOO to 93 06, and trlmmed the Deerfleld Reserves IOO to 97 5 ln thelrfnnol outing agaunst the Holderness Reserves rn Plymouth N H the Red and Block were narrowly edged out by o O2 of a polnt wlth the score 99 98 to lOOl Aslde from the competatuve team there was another group of sknng enthuslasts These Included In thus group are Duck Meyers Roger Page, Rohm Adams, Suzue Clark,Joon Shepherd and Don Rumpllck ik I' r:,, P 1 n u u I I 0 on Q n 1 . s F . , , u 1 u I Q u Il ll I I I I I , . .
