As we look back through the four years you have worked with us, we gain greater perspective to understand your fine qualities both as a teacher of Latin and as a friend. Beneath your keen sense of humor you succeeded in making us fully realize the ideals of good citizenship. These lessons we shall always treasure, and when we leave dear Westfield High, we shall depart with the feeling that life is wonderful, because Our Pop says so. The Class of 1950 sincerely wishes that your future years may be filled with the happiness and enioyment so richly deserved by one who has so faithfully and efficiently served so many alumni of West- field High School. We will never forget you. CLASS OF 1950 DEDICATED TO WPCF BGW' ER 2 FOREWCJRD Within these pages we have endeavored to review for you some of the highlights of our Sentimental Journey through the halls of Westfield High. Now, as we look back, we realize how highly forma- tive were these years in which we traveled along with you. These were the years when we began to emerge from our sheltered chrysalis and were exposed to new ideas and iniiuences. Broad avenues of knowledge were opened to us and wise counsel was afforded us. For all this we are deeply grateful. What can we say to you who follow in our footsteps? We cannot pass on our personal experiences, since you have boarded this train on schedules different from ours. However, you will have your mem- ories to record at a later date, and they will be equally rewarding. We can only urge that you open your minds and hearts to the oppor- tunities all about you. Thus by setting your goals high and striving to reach those goals, you, too, will enioy a iourney as profitable and sentimental as ours. IRENE GIETEK, Editor-in-Chief 3 HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR JOURNEY It's been a wonderful trip, hasn't it? I said, turning to my traveling companion. I wouldn't know, she answered. I iust boarded this train at the last stop. Oh, you must be heading for track 53. She nodded. WouId you like to hear about our Sentimental Journey? O.K., Here goes! September 1946! We were waiting in the station, eagerly scanning our timetables when we heard, 'Westfield High, Unlimited leaving on tracks forty-seven, forty-eight, forty-nine, and fif-tee! All aboard, all abo-oard! Don't crowd, plenty of room for Everee-bod-ee!' We were welcomed on board by Engineer Abernethy. It was rather hectic at first, for none of us had been on this train before. We made our share of blunders, too-going through the wrong doors, looking for dinner in the baggage car, and more of the same. In appreciation of these errors we heard ieering cries of 'Fro-osh-munl' To these provoking utterances we bravely responded, 'We'd rather be fresh than stalel' Despite these foolish things, we had some good times, too-such as our Freshman-Sophomore Party held in our special Gala-Occasional Party-and-Banquet Car CWhoopee-Car, for shortl. Things were rolling along quite smoothly by the time September 1947 came around the track with a new engineer, Mr. Haskins. We again enioyed our class social, and even felt generous enough to let the little Freshies come. By now, our class had several boys taking active part in Sports fplayed in the Club Car, of course! and we helped win the title of Western Mass. Football Champs! ' Having had enough of being 'Wise Fools,' we settled down to the serious business of maintaining dignity as Upper Classmen. Yes, you guessed it-the time is 1948, and we have boarded the 'Unlimited,' as Juniors. Oh, happy day! We were certainly some- thing with our class rings. And to add to our list of achievements, we even won the Peanut Bowl Trophy fwell, the Seniors helped a Iittlej when the train decided to take a detour through Columbus, Georgia. But the most wonderful event was the Junior- Senior Prom. For this occasion the G-O-P and B-Car all but shone, too bad it had to end! Our destination was coming closer, for September 1949 had arrived. We mighty Seniors smiled tolerantly at the young ones, as we climbed on board for the last time. The year was high-lighted by another Peanut Bowl Victory, the Prom, and Senior Banquet. It would be hard, we decided, to leave without any sign of regret, for the years had been so wonderful. The train could not have gone a fraction so smoothly, if it had not been for Engineer Haskins, who kept us on the right track, and our teachers, who proved to be excellent conductors. Yes, said my little friend. l can see why you hate to leave. I do, but I hope when you come to the end of the line, that you, too, will be able to look back on a marvelous Sentimental Journey! Here we have learned the wrong and right The people who were drunk with might And fought and killed to rule mankind- What did they gain? What did they find? We have been taught the way of life, The wars, the peace, the stress and strife, From these a knowledge we should gain To free this world from care and pain. Man's life is much too short to waste, On something fine it should be based: For freedom, peace, and liberty- What finer things on earth can be? As we rounded the curve, entering the WHS terminal, the train of destiny came to a iolting stop, and we were con- fronted with the seemingly endless stairway to our assigned compartments. We bewildered Frosh then staggered out of the caboose iust in time to escort the haughty Seniors from their Pullman Cars. Sept. 15, 1949 Dear Diary, This was election day! Nominations came flying in all directions. Nervously we awaited the results. The conductors of our iourney are to be: President, John Callahan, Vice-president, Richard Delnickas, Secretary, Shirley Ann Christianson, Historian, Richard Damron. Oct. 29, 1949 Dear Diary, The S53 question today was, What 'cha gonna wear tonite? You guessed itl It's the Freshman- Sophomore party to be held in our gym. Nov. 7, 1949 Dear Diary, Today we crossed the first of the five bridges in the course of our iourney. In other words, report card day! Nov. 22, 1949 Dear Diary, Another election day! This morning we gave up our fifteen minute study before class-to march into the auditorium and choose the outstanding pupils for our Student Council. They were outstanding all right-out standing in front of the school next day, watching the Birdie for the Gammadionl Dec. 23, 1949 Dear Diary, Today we had a touch of the Christmas spirit in our assembly. Eight members of the Frosh Glee Club were chosen to take part in the Nativity tab- leaux. Halos were trembling and robes were un- comfortably stiff. Oh, well, it happens only once a year! Jan. 26, 1950 Dear Diary, What do ya' think we did today?? Why, we chose our motto-Education ls The Key To Life-our colors, Red and White-our class flower, the White Rose. Pretty good choice-what say?? Well, that about does itl We've come to the first stop in our iourney and we now look forward to three more years at WHS. Frosh of 1949-1950 CHUC-C-ING ALONG TO JUNIOR-LAND Home Rooms 111, 307, 105, 103 CLASS We've just gone by the first few station stops on our journey aboard the 1950 Special as somewhat capricious, but striving freshmen. Now we're well on our way as persevering Sophomores-the Class of '52, Perhaps the fact that as Sophomores we found our academic life far different can be attributed to the prevalent amicable atmosphere, for WHS had begun to mean real harmony for us. Under the leadership of Skippy White as presi- dent, Victor Krawczyk as vice-president, Donald Bodendorf as secretary, and May Hunt as our his- torian, we were fast acquiring prestige. We were also contributing toward the betterment of our school with Lyle Densmore, Richard English, Fred Morris, and Art Mszanski on our honorable Student Council. O 40 F1952 Now we began to really take an active interest in our school affairs. We are quite proud that some of the year's most honored athletes were our class- mates traveling along with us. Who cheered more than we Sophomores at all the games? We were busy sharing in other activities, too. Certainly the songsters from our class aided in helping our Glee Club to become a success. Others of us were par- ticipating in such diverse activities as the Press Club and Debating Club. Yes, we, the class of '52, are onward bound, realiz- ing that there are far longer paths into the future. Thus, with an eye to the past, and a thought for the future, we are endeavoring to make our mark at WHS! WE'RE ALMOST THERE Home Rooms 301, 210, 304 CLASS OF 1951 The next car pulling up to the station is car num- ber 1951, representing the Mighty Juniors of Westield High School. From the outside, the car looks like all the rest, but you'll soon find out that this car is quite different. Come on in, and I'll show you. lt is divided into six compartments, with one of these numbers-301, 210, 304, 207, 204, 106- printed neatly on each door. Inside we see Mr. Williams, Miss Pushor, Mr. Guild, Ernie Morrill, Miss Ripley, and Mr. Lamitie in charge of each compart- ment. Over in one corner we see a special room with the Junior motto, Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve, on the door. As we enter, Mr. Williams, our class sponsor, Toot Fioroni, our class president, Larry Ring, vice-president, Jo Capilli, secretary, and our his- torian, Jack Cavanaugh, greet us. Mr. Williams begins right away to tell us all about the activities of his Juniors, of whom he is quite proud. My-upperclassmen have certainly been a busy group this year, especially, Dave Gordon, Adele Ryan, Jane Wyman, and Theo Balabanis, the Jun- ior representatives on the Student Council. The first job the Juniors had was to buy their class rings. Dur- ing the football season, Len Warner, Jiggs Mor- rissey, Jack Cavanaugh, Hoot Fioroni, and Jack Robinson starred on the lineup. Many Juniors took part in a contest to choose their Class Banner. Perhaps the event which was enioyecl the most was the annual Junior-Senior Prom. For this Big Affair a Prom committee, host and hostess, and ushers had to be chosen. Don't you agree that these Mighty Juniors have been busy this year? As we leave the 1951 car and all these pleasant memories behind us, we see all the Juniors out on the platform. They are knocking on the door of the next car marked Senior -the last car in which they will ride on their Sentimental Journey! This Christmas pageant held a spellbound audience entranced, as the sacred Bethlehem story sol- emnly unfolded before our eyes. Added to the splendor of this pa- geant were the many sweet voices of our Glee Clubs, as they blended the theme together with the old familiar carols. OUR SPECIAL CUSTODIANS Always ready to lend a helping hand, these custodians have served the school faithfully for many years. Making life at W.H.S. more pleas- ant is their key objective, as they go about their many and varied tasks. Asking no thanks but the gratification they ultimately receive from a iob well done, these four have earned a place in the hearts of all of us. NOTICE THE COUPLES!
