We Point With Pride To our principal, Dr. Thomas I. Abernethy, whom we welcome back from five years of war duty. In the service of his country, he was pro- moted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel, and also received the legion of merit medal. With Dr. Abernethy as our educational director, we are confident that success and honor will ever be the distinctive marks by which Westfield High will be known to all. To Mira Poler, a member of our English department for twenty-five years. Miss Poler was also head of the guidance department, and helped to shape the future careers of many students of Westfield High. We extend to her our best wishes for the years to come. To Adelbert Iakeman, who for sixteen years faithfully served Westfield High as head of the English department. As director of publications, Mr. Iakeman focused attention upon our Herald , which through his untiring efforts was awarded first place among Western Massachusetts school papers. We, the Class of '46, and the students following us, will greatly miss his thoughtful ways of understanding. We wish him much success in his new position. To Merle F. Miles, who has returned from two years in the Navy to again take his place as athletic director. Coach will always be known for the powerful basketball teams he produced, season after season. His varied athletic experience will be invaluable in years to come. To Dorothy O'Day, who did a wonderful job with the school Red Cross Club and Iunior Canteen Good luck, Miss O'Day, in the work you are planning to do. To William Bullens, who in the two years' absence of Coach Miles, did so well as physical director Billy also devoted much of his spare time to our hockey team. I 22 l
