Coach Moge not only has established WHS as a leading athletic power of Western Massachusetts and New England, but what is more important has continued and furthered our school's reputation for clean sportsmanship. Under his leadership during the past year the Red and Black Bombers have enjoyed their finest overall athletic season in the history of WHS competition, gaining him acknowledgment as the outstanding three-sport coach of this section. The athletes who have shared his triumphs have received much from his influence, for there can be no greater thrill to a schoolboy than the knowledge that he helped to win the big game. The locker room scenes with The Coach after the Hol- yoke, Cathedral and Pawtucket games will stay long in one's sentimental memory. ' So it is to you, Coach William Moge and to your achievements, we dedicate this Gammadion. Congratulations for a job well done. WILLIAM B. W Ro or FOREWORD This year the Gammadion staft presents to you, our erst- while classmates and student friends, a copy of the cherished volume which has become a tradition ot the graduating classes of our school. In compiling the Gammadion ot 1946, the statt has aimed to follow the plan introduced a year ago, whereby members of all classes might receive a copy ot the book on their activity tickets. While the contents of this year's book are the same for all students, the graduation class copies this year feature a stili binding and a cover designed with the senior colors, blue and white. All material is compiled as of March 18th, 1946. Very sincerely we hope that this book, a story of our years together, will afford to all its readers as much pleasure now, and in the years to come, as we have had in producing it. Cautiously we approached W.l-l.S., and with eager faces peered in the open doors. Soon, however, upon entering these portals, the friendliness of sophomores, teach- ers, and upper classmen won us over, and before long We were ready for the ordeal which proved to be both exciting and eventful. Through the excellent guidance of our counselor, Miss Cutler, many of our per- plexing problems were solved. As our sponsor, Miss Keefe, organized our class and planned our first social event. Our home room teachers, who daily helped to orient us to high school life are as follows: Miss McMahon, Mr. Morrill, Mrs. Slater, Miss Pushor, Miss Leary, Miss Cutler, and Miss Keefe. ln ourselves our future lies is our motto. After we were given our books, lockers, etc., learned to go through the right door, and before we began our social life, we, the class of 1946, held our first class meeting in the cafeteria, in September, under the direction of Pop Bowler, our sponsor. Ah, yes, wasn't it exciting! Days passed, homework increased, friendships grew, and guess what we were all talking so excitedly about? Uh-huh, you guessed, it was the Fresh- man Party. For eats we had cider, doughnuts, and popcom balls. Before we dared glide out on the gym floor, we were entertained by our fellow class- mates. Hm-m-m! Some show-we were in the dark for a while 'cause of a blackout. But we made up for it by singing in the auditorium. Oh, yes, our elections were as follows: president, Thomas Maharg vice president, Richard Nirns, secretary, Iean Nelsong historian, Dorothy Nelson. Pretty good choice, I'd say. Douglas Williams and Iohn Fitzgerald were elected to represent our class in the Student Council. On Ianuary 27, the freshman class officers conducted the assembly. Tommy read the program, lean led the Lord's Prayer and the flag salute, and Dot read the Scripture. Dick, our vice president, was unable to attend. ' The following day the election of officers for the second term took place. Dick Gaylord was our new president, Bill Andrews, our vice-presidentg and Patty Ann Barnes was elected secretary. ' A wee bit later we discovered our class colors to be blue and white. Pro Deo Et Patria -for God and country-was our class motto, and the gardenia was chosen as our class flower. The little freshmen, as we were then known, were represented in foot- ball, basketball, track, and baseball. Ierry Benoit received numerals for play- ing baseball-some kid, huh! A few of us were in the Dramatic Club. Kay Scanlon and Dot Nelson received a Forensic League Pin for participating in the Debating Club. And it was in April sometime that we all had our pictures taken. Smile pretty -and all the excuses that were made when it was over! Finishing our first year, we had three more to go. ln September, 1943, we elected Iames Laramy, president, David Gorman, vice president, Barbara Wallbank, secretary, Patricia O'Rourke, historian. We were wise Sophomores then, no longer the babies of WHS. Again we planned the Sophomore-Freshman Party, held on November Sth. Entertain- ment from 8 to 9, and dancing to Ray Sparrow's orchestra from 9 to ll. What fun!! Our Student Council members for the Sophomore year were Iohn Milar and Barbara Rutka. Our intellectuals! More ruggeds went out for sports this year, and best of all-we had a few Sophomore cheerleaders! The canaries from our class were in the Glee Club, then under the direction of Mrs. Scott. 'Some of us were getting out the Herald , others were Barrymores and Garsons in the Dramatic Club. Well, Cld Man Winter rolled around, and so did the class elections. David Hosley was our president, Shirley Mahar, our vice-president, and Kathleen O'Rourke, our secretary. Popularity does it, ever guess? l37l Student Council elections for the junior year were Iohn Milar, Iohn Touhey, Richard Nims, and Virginia Garcia. But need they improve the school? Heck, no! Listen my children, and you shall hear- We are now in our junior year! just imagine, we were upper classmen, then! Up to this time we had been admiring those who were fortunate enough to own a class ring. Finally we had one of'our own. We all had an absolutely dreamy time at the Iunior-Senior Prom, held at the Armory, on April 27th. We girls tripped land I do mean trippedl up the stairs in our floating gowns, aided by our uneasy men, who would be quite pleased when the affair was over. But then, Ray Sparrow's music, the dimly colored lights encircling us, dancing cheek-to-cheek, quietly talking near the fountain in the center of the floor-all this made it a heavenly night to re- member. Well, to get back to facts-Kathleen O'Connor designed our lovely class banner. lt's a honey! Besides the clubs previously mentioned, we juniors, splashed around in the Swimming Club, and used our brains in the War Stamp Committee. Some of the girls did community work in the junior Canteen, and our boys played a cold game of hockey. Meanwhile, Tri-Hi and Hi-Y were going strong-so strong that they presented a Minstrel that went over with a bang! lOn Iune 14th came the Awards Assembly. Many of us received Service W pins, Ann Monahan won the History Award, Iim Atwater won the Harvard Book Prize, and Richard Nims won the Herbert R. Thorpe Iournalism Award. Congratulations, kids, good work! We presented a gift to Dr. Crutsinger, our principal, who was leaving school to be replaced by Col. Abernethy. And now, for the most important-our Senior Year! There's not a minute to waste, with class elections, class ballots, cap and gown, prom banquet, and the mcmy other committees that we work so hard on to make this the best year of all. Our officers for the first half year were: president, Bill Andrews, vice president, Virginia Garcia, secretary, Alfred Laude, historian Patty Ann Barnes. The wiser members of the class of '46 were told that they were honorably named as members of Pro Merito. Such an honor-yes! Meanwhile, the GAM- MADION was being prepared to outdo the past yearbooks, as usual. Dose kids is woiking hard! And for the last, very last half year we elected Francis Rochford, presi- dent, Dick Gaylord, vice president, Virginia Garcia, secretary. On May lOth we went to the Senior-junior Prom-for the last time-of- ficially. It was even better this year dancing to Ray Sparrow's orchestra. In Iune we had our Senior banquet, where We glanced for the first time at our GAMMADION, ate the delicious vittles, and enjoyed ourselves to the ut- most. Whew! was it hot! warm, that is! Some of our fellas were represented in the Armed forces-Thibeault, Bickford, Hess, Keeney, Ierr, and Cleary. Ta-da-a-a! Well, it's over-and what memories. We hope, that by our experiences we will succeed in the years to come. See ya' . . . fellow classmates! PATTY ANN BARNES I 381 Twenty Years Hence - - - The following is a diary compiled during the past twenty years for the class of 1946. It was collected by us'ns and presented as a gift to Adelbert M. We should like to close with this bit of advice-if you ever want to tell a bad egg, above all, be sure of what you have to tell and break it gently. BORIS Our marks- X lean McGowan X Dave Hosley l44l Ten Years Hencer - - Have you any scars?',' No, only the one I'm smoking. You're a card. I know, I shuffle when l walk. I sat there, stunned. So this was the comedy show they had told me about, lean and Dave, We're all the Rave. An invitation to attend their broadcast had come in the morning mail signed McGowan and Hosley, The Greatest Little Show in Radio. I had hurried to the studio and my seat be- tween Bob Hope and lack Benny, who were leaning forward, mouths open in wonder. After the initial shock had worn off, and as the jokes flew between them, my mind wandered to what I had read of the two in past years. Not that I didn't like the show, but beinq a friend of the two back at Westfield High School, I knew their routine by heart. Digging way, way back in my memory, I came up with a few highlights of their previous careers. Of course, everyone who was anyone had read Iean's novel, All Set, Let's Go, a tale of the trials and tribulations of a cheerleader. But after grad- uating from WHS, Mac led a rather stormy life bouncing around the coun- try from newspaper to newspaper, writing a sports society column entitled Gridiron Dirt. I lost track of her after a while, except for an occasional post card, and had supposed she was pushing a baby carriage in Peoria, Kansas. I was wrong as usual. For one day I noticed a paper carrying the news that she had been fired as cheerleader coach from a big mid-western university, after taking an altogether unloyal interest in a rival college's football captain. She more or less disappeared after that, and tonight was the first time I had ever seen her in eleven years. I remember reading that Dave had attended M.I.T., where he perfected the cheer, Beaver, beaver, chew, chew chew, to offset Yale's Bulldog, bull- dog, bow, wow, wow. Also that old Eli had sued and that Dave had fled to the French Foreign Legion to escape the arm of the law. Nothing was heard of him for ten years, although a rumor was circulated that a Southwick Salam had vowed to reveal the true story behind Turhan Bey. Some years later, I recall reading in the WHS Herald that a turbaned gentleman with sand in his beard had unsuccessfully tried to sell Fred Ensworth an automatic logarithm computer. He had later found a customer in Fred's fourth year math class, so I gathered it must have been Hos. That's all I had heard of him until the recent invitation. I was rudely snapped from my dream of memories by the leaning weight of Bob Hope, who had been overcome by it all. Turning my eyes toward the stage, and propping Bob up, I awaited the show's end when we three could renew our WHS friendships. IIM ATWATER I 45 I Class Will Upon the Zlst of Iune, in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hun- dred and Forty-Six, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the One Hundred and Seventieth, We the Senior Class of Westfield High School, being, through the great goodness of God, of sound and perfect memory, and accounting it our duty to set things in order, with reference to that portion of estate which God in His goodness hath given us, therefore, we do make this our last will and testament, and do bequeath as follows: ltem l. To our principal, Dr. Abernethy, our counselor, Miss Poler: our spon- sor, Mr. Bowler, and all other members of the faculty, our boundless and un- dying thanks for the generous patience and constant Worthy example in treat- ing of our numerous problems of study and citizenship. ltem 2. To the Student Council: our praise for the many tasks of rehabilita- tion which they have so ably advanced, and for the opportunity which they have afforded many of our number to become conversant with the problems of democratic government. ltem 3. To the various scholastic and athletic organizations: our admiration for their achievements in providing education and recreation to their mem- bers, and to the rest of the school. Item 4. To the members of our class who have so unselfishly and unhesitant- ly answered their country's call to the defense and occupation forces: praise and gratitude which cannot be expressed by mere words. ltem 5. To the future seniors: the charge of upholding the dignity which has always characterized senior classes in this high school. ltem 6. To all future Westfield High School classes: a record of scholastic and athletic achievement which they must not only equal at all times, but also surpass many times. This to be taken to all intents and purposes to be our last will and testa- ment, to which we do subscribe and seal this 21st day of Iune, 1946, the day and year written above. THE CLASS OF 1946 Stuart Whitehill Kellogg Witnesses: William Wesson '47 Bernard llagan '48 Donald Swanson '49 l46l Class Poem The time has come to say farewell-to part. How quickly these few years have glided by! And soon our hopes, sequestered in each heart, Shall seek the fullness of the ripened sky, But only till Life's doors, if checked by chain, Relent to us as stars that stir the night. Remember that the sun shines through the rain, And always keep our faces toward the light! There is a path for every one of us, Life holds no limitation on our course, To chart our voyage long and travel thus Is good, but better--not forget our source. Someday, perhaps, We'll turn and scan the years CBut not with nonchalant or careless eyel, We'll View the sacrifice, the trivial tears Accompanying the goal we glorify! And so farewell! For once we all agree. Farewell we must! We'll never be content Till we are on our way. For memory, We'll let this moment be our monument. And with farewell, this message let us bear: The precious things are those which are most rare. Dorothy Goldbergh Class Song Dear Westfield High, we say goodbye With sadness in each heart. ln helping us to build our lives, You've played a noble part. We'll not forget the carefree hours We've spent within your walls, But now the time has come to leave, Farewell to your dear halls. The football games, assemblies, too, The way you look in spring, The mountains that surround your fields Will happy memories bring. Alas, the 'day has finally come, For us to bid goodbye, Though we look back, We'll march ahead, So farewell, Westfield High!
