15 an merican Heritage Education A 77 La Tech 1976- '77 For ward in WGSTan WISCONSIN TeCHnlcaL INSTITUTE Volume XII ISCODSID W La Crosse, Richard Schmitz photo by Introduction In this year of 1976-77 the spirit of our nations bicentennial celebration still somewhat prevails, but in a different context now. Last year we were concerned with the past, reminiscing with minute- men, thirteen star flags and the spirit of 76. In 1977 we must leave the past behind and look forward to the future. We must plan for a life,s career and what better place to prepare for that career than at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute. Throughout this book we will observe the students of WWTI getting ready for the future, both academically and socially. We will see their instructors at their sides, teaching, encouraging, and sometimes even prodding to prepare each individual for the unforseen future. Amid the somber and serious instruction happy faces and laughter will be predominent as the students find time for campus social events, sports activities and community involvement. On this all-important educational journey, determination and pers averance will be experienced, to improve vocational-technical education and make more rewarding student careers. These careers will inturn result in a greater and stronger America and thus make the next 200 years even better than the last. With the understanding of the contents of this volume - come now with the spirit of 76 and journey with us ilforward into ,77 . . . into the pages of a LaTech, determined to be even better than the last. by Sharon Pionke LaTech Advisor photos by: Cindy Lawhorn, Sandy Stugen, Lucy VonArx and Therese Hoskins. photo by: Teri Hiles Table of Contents I. Fritz After the new building of the La Crosse Vocational School was completed in about 1924, a partnership started that has lasted almost 50 years. That iipartnershipii was between a man and a school, and started with the meeting of young Bob Fritz and the late La Crosse Vocational Director, J ohn B. Coleman. Coleman used to chuckle when he related the story about young Bob . . . 1There was this eager little kid in the neighborhood who kept looking through our windows to see what was going on, so one day I asked him to come on in and go to school and do some odd jobs for us, and that was Bob Fiitz . . and hes been with us ever since!!!7 One of Bob,s 7odd 7 jobs was running the schools Soda Fountain - tmore popular in its day than Third Street,s bars todayl. The soda fountain and snack bar was located in the southwest corner of the Coleman Building beneath the stairway to the second floor twhere the glassed in display window is now locatedi. It was a wonderful place where Bob would mix you up the thickest chocolate maltintown, a cool lime phosphate, a fancy ice cream sundae, or whatever hit the spot. Huge double dip ice cream cones were available for only a nickel. Giant sized candy bars were also five cents, sodas were a dime, malts 15 cents and sundaes were 15 cents and 20 cents. By the mid-30is Bob had completed three years of vocational courses in printing and publishing . . . and was asked to be Printing Production Assistant to Mr. Alph Sorenson, head of the schooPs Printing Department. Bob has been a member of the Printing Department staff ever since. From 1935 to 1970 he continued as Production Assistant, working with Mr. Sorenson for that entire'time. In 1970, he became a teacher assistant. In order to get related professional working experience in his field, Bob worked at various local and area printing firms during summer vacations up until about 1960. In the late 408, Bob set up his job-printing shop in a shed behind his brother Leonardis home and operated the shop on a spare-time basis for several years. In 1970, he received his GED. certificate and qualified for a provisional certification by the State VTAE Board as a teacher assistant. In taking his GED. test, he scored one of the highestgrades in the math area of the test ever recorded at the time, according to the late Willard Hanson, who was Education Coordinator for the La Crosse District Schools when Bob took the GE .D. test. Bob now holds a iive-year standard certificate as a teacher assistant. He was made Manager of the WWTI Graphic Copy Center in 1971. In the late 1950s, Bob underwent three summers of corrective surgery for his physical handicap at Madison General Hospital; and in the summer of 1976, he suffered a near fatal illness which caused him to miss about two months on the job. He worked over 25 years with the handicap and 15 more after extensive surgery before he was forced to miss an extended period of regular work at his job. This is testimony to his personal fortitude and loyalty to his work at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute. Bob Fritz typifies the image of both the vocational student and the devoted vocational teacher. His hardships and the help he received through his association with vocational education, as well as the expertise and personal assistance he has passed along to countless printing and publishing students over the 42 years he has been on the staff of Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, demands recognition beyond the ordinary. For this reason, the 1977 LATECH is dedicated in his honor. The 1977 LA TECH staff, WWTI students, faculty, administration and the District Board salute a distinguished vocational educator . . . Coleman; retired Machine Tool Department Head James A. Becker; and Data Processing Department Head Donald Mundinger. The 7976 LA TECH was dedicated to John Coleman. He was nationally famous as a vocational educator and was written about in a READERS DIGEST Magazine article that' featured our schooi in November, 7942. Mr. Coleman came to the La Crosse Vocational School to become its second Director in 7976. He retired in 7962, but stayed on another year in an advisory capacity. He remained active in state and local charitable and service organizations until 7974 when illness confined him to his home. He was born in 7889 and died at age 86 on July 70, 7976. James A. Becker was another longtime staff member of Western Wisconsin Technical institute. He served as head of the machine tool program for almost 40 years. Mr. Becker was one of those self-made vocational educators who learned his tool and die-making trade as an apprentice, worked at his craft outside the field of edu- cation, and then became an excellent instructor who was responsible for helping hundreds of students find careers in this highly technical field. After becoming a vocational instructor, Jim Becker went back to school himself. He spent summers studying for his advanced degrees, receiving his bachelor's degree in 7952, and his Master's Degree in Education in 7966 at age 59. He retired formally in 1974, after 39 years as full-time instructor at WW. T.l., but continued teaching evening classes and part-time during the day until his death. He was born in 7907 and died on August 22, 7976. It strikes the student body and faculty especially hard when one of their very popular instructors, and collegues, is striken suddenly and dies while vitally involved with the lives of so many. Donald Mundinger was one of the more involvedandsin- cere vocational educators on the staff at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute when he passed away December 77, 7976, after a brief illness. Don was head of the Data Processing Department at W.W. T.l. and was especially close to his students. He was noted for literally running his own graduate placement service. Many of his past students found jobs in the field of data processing as a result of Don's contacts in the industry, both in La Crosse and throughout the Upper Midwest. He joined the faculty at WW.T.I. in 7967 and helped expand the program from a unit record equipment course to a highly sophisticated third generation computer system train ing program in which students were able to learn everything from an all-around data processing capability, to specialties in various areas of the field. Mr. Mundinger was 53 years of age at his death, and his sudden demise is deeply mourned by his many friends, associa res and students Support Staff 8! Custodians... Important to Personnel 81 Students The support staff of Western Wisconsin Technical Institute consists of secretaries, office assistants, operators, clerks and typists. This staff of competent personnel not only serves administrators and faculty by perform- ing assigned duties in various departments and offices, but is available to the student for innumerable services. Each group has specific duties, whereby students participate in important decisions both on campus and in the community. The Student Coordinating Commission, a liaison between faculty and students, represents the entire student body in student body decision making. Their concern lies within policy recommendations, dealing with student activity fees and forming budgets. These students are also representative on a state vocational, technical level and adhere to regulations presented to them and thus relate this in- formation to WWTIstudents. They are promoters on campus of voter registration, encouraging students to vote in local, state and national elections. This year the Commission also helped to organize the An- nual WWTI Volleyball Marathon at which all proceeds go the Cystic Fibrosis Campaign. Working with the Commission is the Program Council. This group of campus volunteers plans, schedules and presents all campus activities, events and programs. The group is broken up into four com- mittees; Intramurals, Coffee House, Special Events and Cultural Arts. The Intramural Committee controls scheduling, of facilities, team regul ations and posting of team stan- dings at the Activites Center. Intramural sports promoted by the committee include basketball, volleyball and bowling. Coffee House members of the Council arrange such activities as the campus ttAll-Nighterll, student lounge entertainment, including our own WWTI talent at well-liked ltstudent jam sessions. The Special Events Committee deals with coordinating week-long festivities; Fall Fest, Homecoming, Winter Carnival and Spring Fling are the responsibility of this committee. The Cultural Arts Committee brings famed out- side speakers, concerts and art shows to the campus. The group also promotes this type of cultural entertainment with fellow-campuses and the com- munity by keeping abreast of the happenings and posting them for interested students. Regulating dormitory life is the duty of the Residence Hall Council. Together with the Hous- ing Department, the Council is the governing body for all occupants living in the Menis Residence Hall. Aside from conforming with the rules and regulations of the dorm, the council promotes and participates in all campus activities and events. 81 WOEA Larry D. Designed to Develop Leadership, Interest 81 Competency The students who choose the business world for their career goal find clubs orientated to the field at WWTI. . The Wisconsin Office Education Association is opened to any student enrolled in the accounting, secretarial, data processing or finance programs at the school. WWTPS chapter of WOEA is an organization supporting office education programs throughout the state and nation. The group is designed to develop leadership abilities in its members as well as create an interest in the American business system and competency in office occupations, within the framework of vocational and technical career education. The sixty member Accounting Club at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute acts as a liasion between the business community and the students. Members of the group have the opportunity to meet and discuss with businessmen and graduates of the program at special guest speaker sessions held throughout the year. From these meetings students gain valuable insight on jobs and opportunities in the accounting field. Aside from informative meetings the club enjoys social events such as lun- cheons and field trip outings and urges all ac- counting students to become members. The Distributive Education Clubs of America a chapter of the state organization participates in state and national career education competition. The WWTI forty-five member group instills in its members working knowledge of the business world and develops leaders for marketing and distribution. This year DECA sponsored activities like a pumpkin carving contest, Bingo, sales seminars, leadership labs, banquets and social get-togethers throughout the academic school year. Among these activities are pancake brun- ches, participation in school events, this year spon- soring the 1976 Homecoming Queen and King, Maribeth Hutson and Glen Schmitz, catered meals to divisions and guests and this yearts highlight, service to the 2,500 persons during Oktoberfest Heritage Night celebration. A new group on campus is a club called Mix and Make. The purpose of the organization, made up of students in the Institutional Foods and Apparel Arts Programs was to bring students together in one year vocational diploma programs. Sharing skills and knowledge to make bakery items and craft items for sale throughout the year was the groups main function. A portable bakery was conducted by the Institutional Foods students while scarves and handbags were among the items for sale by Apparel Arts students. Funds raised from the projects were used on educational field trips at the end of the year. Majors in the Interior Design program had the op- portunity for first and second year students to work with each other in the Wisconsin Home Economics Organization. Through this interac- tion much was gained during the year. Student awareness and career development increased through involvement on a WHE state level. Locally the group conducted fund raisers such as bake sales and pine cone creation sales all for a dance club trip to New Orleans in the early spring. 85 VICA Offlcers Row 1: Gail Exton-Div. Vocational Indus trial Clubs of America Supported Strongly by Trade 81 Industrial Programs Vocational Clubs of America is a voluntary organization supporting trade and industrial education as an integral part of the education program. VICA is designed to develop leadership abilities, interest and com petency in American trade and industry. Through conferences, workshops and the annual State and National VICA Skill Olympics, members iind their goals are reached and rewarded. The local chapter of VICA at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute is composed of interested students in every department in the Industrial division. Each career orientated group elects its own officers and conducts its own professional, financial and civic activities. Those with leadership abilities are elected officers chosen by individual departments and VICA as a division. Some of these members serve not only on a local level but statewide as well. WWTI was honored with two VICA state officers in 1976-77, Bernadette Brcka, Public Relations officer and Randy Eckern, State Vice President. The Design and Drafting Technicians division of VICA is a group concerned with disseminating technical information relative to improving the science of mechanical design. Initiation and en- couragement are instilled in members to continue education to provide self improvement and progress through increased knowledge. The group fosters a spirit of fellowship among its members and others of allied interests. The 1976-77 thirty three member group held semi-monthly meetings with presen- tations and discussions of subjects relating to design and drafting. Members participate in state drafting and mechanical design contests and this year possessed strong leaders from the program, Ron Geisler, local chapter president and Randy Eckern state vice president. t Strong contenders 'in the past, this year,s Wood Technics group experienced the determination to win the VICA Nationals for Western Wisconsin Technical Institute. Aside from competing in Skill Olympics, a membership drive was conducted to ob- tain additional members, instilling in them a look into the future as competent craftsmen and better in- dividuals. Throughout the year money-making pro- jects were conducted to help support competitors in Skill Olympic activities. VICA cont. page 88, 89, 90 VICA Wood Technlcs William Wagner-Treasurer. Efforts to create a national competition were underway in 1976-77 for students in the Visual Com- munications area. WWTI students in this program are the only competitors at the statewide level of the Skill Olympics. WWTI prepared its students throughout the year for competition among fellow classmates for the statewide first place win. Aside from Skill Olympics participation, visual com- munication students conducted fund raising projects and educationl field trips to the Milwaukee and Chicago areas. Gaining worthwhile job experience and serving the school is how the Printing majors conduct fund rais- ing projects. The printers set up their own business producing Christmas cards, personal stationary and wedding announcements for satisfied customers. Trade skills gained on these jobs were applied in Olympic competition and funds were used toward a field trip to Kansas City, Kansas to tour Inter- Collegiate Press, La Tech publisher. 1976 was a year to re-activate students in the auto department, after seven years of not having an organization the Tech Wheels became a part of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. Any auto department student was eligible to be part of the group and share in the promotion of mechanic certification, safe vehicles and courteous driving habits. Students in the Commercial Art program held regular meetings throughout the year to conduct their mini-art agency. Gaining worthwhile job experience through production of posters, greeting cards and flyers, the group raised the necessary funds to sponsor students in State and National Olympic Competition. The only school participating in graphic competition in Wisconsin, WWTI as in the past, was honored with a commercial art winner in the nationals. Dispensing with a departmental club set-up, Auto students spend their academic year gaining knowledge and skills through close classroom and on-the-job lab contact. This valuable training produced tough competitors from Western Wisconsin Technical Institute and thus the students prove to be competent auto technicians during the Skill Olympics activities. Any student in the Diesel program is eligible to be a member of this departmentis group. Elected officers and their members held weekly activity work nights to raise necessary funds to sponsor competitors in the Olympics. Through the activity night, participating students had the opportunity to increase their knowledge in the diesel iield. These clubs vary in activities from camera bugs to school newspaper writers and publishers, to outdoor fun-lovers and a community service oriented group. The ttshutter bugsii at WWTI are key members of the Photo Club. With funds from membership dues the students in this group are permitted to use darkroom facilities and supplies for their own black and white photographic needs. Aside from shooting pictures, processing and developing, the photo club sponsors experiments, demonstrations and guest speakers for all interested in the latest camera and photographic advancements. If concern lies in publishing procedures, students can be a part of the Cavalcade Newspaper Staff. The staff is made up of those interested in writing, photography, typesetting and the production aspects of the newspaper. The group works cohesively to produce a monthly public ation containing editorials, feature stories, club happenings, upcoming events, sports, news and special student recognition salutes. Aside from being of service to all WWTI students, staff members gain worthwhile experience and a taste of the work-a-day newspaper world. The Outdoor Recreation Committee a division of the Program Council promotes such events as hayrides, canoeing, splunking, camping, biking, ski- ing and picnics to mention a few. Along with recreational outings, the group helps develop in its members outdoor recreational skills to enrich both enviromental and ecological awareness. Those interested in serving the community are productive members of Circle K. Sponsored by the La Crosse Kiwanis Club, Circle K is involved with the local club in many worthwhile activities throughout the year. The 1976 increased membership climb allowed the club to participate in a Bluff Clean-up, a Halloween party for pediatrics at Saint Francis Hos- pital, SalvationArmy Bell Ringing, toys for tots cam- paign as well as lending a helping hand with such city events as Oktoberfest and City Fest t76. 96 WWTI Organizations... The Cavaliers had a rough season and could come up with only four wins a gainst 15 losses. After suffer- ing doubleheader losses at home against Inver Hills and Rochester Community College and on the road at Milwaukee Tech, the Cavaliers broke a six game los- ing streak when 34 year old Ken Herlitzka threw a 4-0 shut out against UW-Barron, Rice Lake. The second game was played in a sea of mud and was called at the end of the fifth with both teams having 10 runs. The suspended game was finished at Rice Lake prior 102 to the regular scheduled doubleheader. UW-Barron won 12-10 in nine innings, but WWTI won both regular games by 5-2 counts. Austin Community College and Madison Tech both took doubleheaders from the Cavaliers at Copeland Park. Lakewood, Region XIII champions, hosted WWTI and had a tough time coming up with 5-3 and 8-7 wins. However, Vorwald, Kapernick and Mahlum decided to forget basketball and it left the Cavaliers a little short. After starting out slowly which is usual for WWTI, the Cavaliers came on strongly in mid-January defeating highly regarded UW-Marshlield 79-70. Marshfield came into the game with a 10-1 record at the time. The Cavaliers continuedwinning five of the next six games and it appeared they were beginning to reach their peak when the roof fell in. Against nationally sixth ranked Waukesha Technical Institute, Mark Navis the Cavaliers leading scorer, t22.8 points per gamei rebounder t12 per game and leading the team in assists was sidelined for the remainder of the season. Eric Steininger 65 , 210 pound forward landed a right cross to Markis jaw and broke it on both sides. As a result the Cavaliers were very short of big men and had no one to relieve Sampson, Shaker and Robson in the low post areas. After the loss of Navis, the Cavaliers lost their last four regular season games even though they played excellent ball. Against Madison, Milwaukee and Suomi the Cavaliers were leading until late in the game when their endurance just gave out. Had Mark been healthy Coach Kothe feels his team would have won those three games. In tournament play the Cavaliers lost a heartbreaker to UW - Richland 70-60. Foul troulbe hurt the Cavaliers as both Robson and Shaker played very little in the second half. Mike picked up three fouls early in the nrst half as the Cavaliers were leading by five points with nine minutes remaining. At halftime we were down by six but came back strong in the second half. With iive minutes remaining in the game WWTI was leading 54-52 when Mike fouled out. After losing Navis the Cavalier quint played up to their potential, however, when one of the big men was basketball action continued page 106 in foul trouble Ray Knudtson had to fill in the low post. He was just too short to handle the big men on defense and as a result the opponents were able to get some in in buckets. Mark Navis led the Cavaliers in scoring, rebounding and assists in the 17 games he played. Mark averaged 22.8 points, 12 rebounds and 2.6 assists. The top defensive player was Mike Robson averaging five blocked shots a game and doing an excellent job of covering the middle of our zone defense. Mike was always given the assignment of defensing the opponents top player. Mike was also the second leading scorer averaging 12.8 points and 8.4 rebounds. A1 Sampsons 8.5 rebounds and 12.7 points per game was the most consistent player for the Cavaliers. Game after game Coach Kothe could count on a steady performance from A1. Cocaptains Ramon Knudtson and Steve Shaker were instrumental in keeping the squad from getting down after the loss of Navis. Ray averaged 10.9 and 106 Basketball Action in 7 Z .. Steve 9.4 points a game. Steve also averaged 7 rebounds while Ray had the assignment of defensing the opponents top guard. Starting late, but coming on strong, was Paul Hoff who took over the starting guard poisition after the loss of Mark. Paults quickness and desire made up for his lack of natural talent. Paul had 37 assistants in his last 7 games to lead the Cavaliers in that department. Jeff Bjerke and A1 Lindsay did an excellent job coming off .the bench giving the regular guards a break. Lettermen for the Cavaleirs are Ramon Knudston, Al Sampson, Steve Shaker, J eff Bj erke, Mike Robson, Al Lindsay, Paul Hoff, Mark Navis and Tom Smith. Only Mike Robson will return for the Cavaliers for the 1977-78 year. The team this year consisted of eight players: Jenny McCaskey, Lori Weigand, Marcia Johnson, Mareen Kinyon, Darlen Ellefson, Cindy Kunze, Sue Thompson and Diane Durst. The team was coached by J ohn Liska, a basketball player from WWTI last year. Coach Liska said, iiThe girls have been playing really well this year and have had balanced scoring all around? As of February 11, their record stood at 4 and 2. The girls played some good games. At 110 Waukesha they won 37 to 35. That was both the best and the most difficult game theyive played? said J ohn. The team played Baraboo twice and beat them both games, 105-28 and 89-12. They also had a close game with city rival Viterbo. The score was 44-43 in favor of WWTI. Coach Liska said that he was very pleased with this season and admits that he has learned a lot about coaching this year. The girlsi team, however, needs much more support and J ohn hopes more girls will be interested enough to join next year. ...Involved in Athletics Glrls Varslty Bowllng Team Front: Sandy Ulrich. The WWTI float was awarded first place in the educational division tthe Mrs. Oktoberfest Award1 in the 16th annual Maple Leaf Parade on Saturday, October 2. This was the ninth consecutive year that WWTI has won a first place award. The 1976 float was designed around the theme uFreedom to Learn a Chosen Career. It was designed primarily in Mr. Heramis Display and Design Construction class in the spring, 1976 term by Carol Eirschele, a second year Commercial Art student. Mr. Heramis summer Wood Techniques classes constructed the framework from plans drawn by Sharon Pionke, assistant Graphics Communications instructor. The plans included six animated murals, featuring vocational and educ ational related hgures in American history. Another area of WWTITs Oktoberfest in- volvement, the fence painting contest, was open to any La Crosse area individual or groups who wanted to take part. WWTPs commercial art VICA department won third place in the contest. The 8 by 15 feet long fences were used to decorate the gates and grounds of the southwest festgrounds. Paint was donated by local merchants, but contestants provided their own brushes. The fences were judged immediately follo'wing the deadline on October 1 at noon. Originality and contribution to the 1976 theme were factors in judging; $100,$7 5, and $50 prizes were awarded for first, second, and third places. Heritage Night, a full evening of entertainment combining the tradition of Ok- toberfest with the heritage of the American Revolution Bicentennial, was featured on Oc- tober 6 at Viterbo College. There were times when we thought that this yearsLa Tech would never make it to the presses. But we kept fighting. We did our jobs and we did them at the expense of our san- ity. It took a lot of effort and ambi- tion. The LaTech had a very limited staff and an unlimited amount of work before .115. Many a Saturday, Sunday, and evenings were spent on dedicated work trying to meet the deadlines. They were not always met on time, but we gave it a whole hearted try.
