LaTech Staff Mr. Harry M. Hutchison Instructional Researclv-Research 8! Development Forward The purpose of the pictorial anthology is to provide a visual statement of who attended and a glimpse at what has happened at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute this past school year. iTis time to bid a fond farewellv-and Godspeed to' the graduates. Thereis work to be done today! Progress beckons with an eager hand, and the products of the future are waiting for fresh minds to invent and produce them. The quality of Eijobs waitingii for you today is ab- normally large. There are plenty of thema-in all shapes and sizes. Common sense tells you then that your investment in an education at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute has equipped you to meet the challenges of modern technology, and possibly has given you a glimpse of the wonder world of tomorrow. But remember-education does not stop on graduation day. All life is a time of learning and relearning. Strive for quality in your work, in your everyday life, and in your continuing education. Quality breeds self-confidence, an important ingredient in todayis world. My sincere thanks to the faculty and students who have devoted long hours so it could be said, this LaTech is the best ever. To the students who are leavinge-weill be in touch. To the students who are returning in the fall-we are looking forward to your leadership in the year ahead. Charles G. Richardson District Director iiWhatis Past Is Prologue William Shakespeare What has been learned in classes at WWTI from teachers, students, formally, and informally this year is now behind us and will serve as the foundation and the beginning for each student as he enters his occupation. It is the student who must identify concepts that he has learned and directly apply them where ap- propriate in the job situation. The formal education may be completed, but there is a family of man, a un- iversity of thought outside the classroom where getting along with people is a key to every stage of the transi- tion of learning, working and every stage thereafter. As our school has gone through its transitions from 1923 to the present, so the student will experience a transi- tion from his school into work. V. Burmnn-Advisor of the 6Transition from WWTI into the World of Workiw Betty MunnSeThe technical nursing program is well organized. The combination of theory with practice in the clinical area is excellent. I feel that the individualized attention given us as well as the performance based instruction has adequately prepared me for my future role in nursing. Technical Nursing What Do Students Think Peter Seidel-The technical program tAir Conditioning 81 Refrigeration Techniciant I was taking wouldn,t have prepared me as much as I needed for a job because it didntt get into things th at were relevant for me. That's why I changed to the servicing program. Also, I got a job and noticed that employers look down on students who are ufresh out of schoolf, Courses should stress that the boss is still king as well as the importance of continuing to learn and experiment rather than being a carbon copy of the teacher. Refrigeration Servicing The LaTech Yearbook Staff notes on the above interview-that students will change programs periodically due to their own prior mis- conceptions on the nature of the course and what it can do for them. Lori Hauser-I like the medical aspect of the program and have found it to be more interesting than ordinary secretarial work. I feel that I,ve learned a lot; the classes and instructors help prepare you for what to expect when looking for a job. Sometimes I worry about the prac- ticality of medical shorthand, with the ever increasing use of the dictaphone. I guess that will depend upon where I am employed. Medical Secretary Steve Arndt- The area of food service management is fantastic and I really like being a part of it. Many people donit think the program is worthwhile, when in fact it offers openings into a variety of fields. Iive been involved in various aspects of restaurant work since I was 16 and have learned more by taking this program than I ever would have on the job. To make this program more appealing tespecially to guys, since we are definitely in the minorityl more management courses rather than food preparation should be taught. Food Service Management Sue-Kawatski-I love it! Everyday is better than the day before. This program has given me a lot of confidence in my future; I know I will be employed in a position that I enjoy. I feel the knowledge and experience I have gained will make me a valuable human being in today's soelety. When I entered the program, there was some skepticism about girls in the program.. But I was greatly encouraged and found that the in- structors really cared about me as a liperson . We have learned, as we act, we shall become. WWTI Proud Participant in 1974 Oktoberfest Activities The 1974 Maple Leaf Parade brought much pride to Commercial Art and Wood Technics students, for their float had received the seventh straight Festmasteris Award. Their feelings were echoed by the theme: 66Happiness is Reaching Your Goal at WWTI. Aboard the prize-winning float, animation provided for two well- known cartoon characters to be seen in a never-ending pursuit across brightly colored desert terrain. As the coyote used rocket power in an attempt to snatch his victim, the roadrunner sped even more quickly away. Both roadrunner and students emerged victorious at the days end. m ITOP RIGHT: WWTI float moves proudly down the Maple Leaf Parade route during Oktoberfest 1974. HS WWTI Kings and Queens Reign over 1974-75 Campus Social Events Each year Western Wisconsin Technical Institute sets aside two weeks of planned activities to celebrate Homecoming and Winter Carnival. A King and Queen are chosen for both events from couples sponsored by various clubs and organizations. During the week the King, Queen and court reign over activities and events held on WWTI campus. Ac- tivities include; pep rallies, basketball games, mini float, icg sculpture and window painting contests, relay races, tug of wars and a formal dance the last even- ing of the week long celebration. TOP RIGHTS David Gassen and Jane Matchey, 1974 Homecoming King and Queen, reign over weeks festivities. Gradually, visual com- munications students turned the announcement device into a half-hour program entitled the s6VIVTTI Today Show? The program consisted of interviews with students and instructors and features on campus happenings. As the student television crew advanced in their professionalism the program expanded outside the boundaries of WWTI into the community at large. An Achievement in Campus Communication The shows were produced on the schooPs closed cir- cuit television and eventually viewers in the LaCrosse area saw the results on Channel Four Teleprompter. Audio visual experience in set arrangement, lighting, eamera work,,projeetion operation, video and audio control, and organizational developing and hosting were visual communication skills gained by students-while Western Wisconsin Technical Institute gained a fresh new media'in campus communication. H9 Spring Graduation Largest Ever Six hundred and twenty seven graduates, the largest class in the history of Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, were presented diplomas in'commencement exercises Thursday, May 23, 1974 in the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium. Charles G. Richardson, Director of Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, and Robert E. Ringdahl, Chairman of the Board presented 361 associate degrees and 266 diplomas to the graduates who had completed one or two year vocational programs. l2! 122 PI'OflleS SSVVhaUs Past Is Prologuet9 . Shakes peare What has been learned in claSses at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute from teachers, students, formally and informally in past years is reflected through those who have experienced before us vocational and technical educa- tion. It is these students who have identified the concepts they have learned and applied them directly to the job situation. On the following pages we will attempt to view some of these job situations from students who have experienced the tttransition from Western Wisconsin Technical Institute into the world of workf Dai Traneis a native of Saigon, Viet Nam and came to the United States in 1966 serving the United States Embassy as a language and culture exchange instructor. After six years of teaching, Dai came to LaCrosse to marry Thuan tPhamt Tran WWTI librarian. We are open to what is new, and different and are discontent with what is mediocre in ourselves and others. We will accept the impossible and strive for the best that is in ourselves.
