Miss Peterson came to us from Reeseville High School, Reeseville, Wisconsin, in 1935. She was a graduate of the three-year course in Business Education atWhitewater,Wisconsin. By 1945 she had completed work at summer sessions for a B.E. degree from Whitewater. The State Vocational and Adult Education Association elected her vice president of their Committee for Business Education. She servedinthat capacity for five years, and headed the local department for twenty-two years. Miss Peterson has taught typing, shorthand, filing, and accounting. Her work with handicapped students in- spired her to develop a touch system for the one-handed typist. Miss Peterson has the remarkable record of not having lost even one day because of illness. She HAS managed to break an arm--and a leg--but in a day or so she was back on the job. Because of Miss Peterson's sincere interest in the training of each student to his highest potential, we wish to honor her by dedicating to her this edition of La Tech. DMINISTRATICJ , . f'-1, Dir. School Board Our City Board of Vocational and Adult Edu- cation plays a very important role in the efficient functioning of our school. Its members are appoint- ed by the La Crosse District School Board for a four- year term, beginning January 1, in accordance with specific membership provisions. The The Board is made up of five members: the City Superintendent of Schools, two representatives of labor, and two representatives of employers. The Director of the local school is an ex-officio member of the Board. The appointments are made so that the term of one member expires each year. Wisconsin is recognized as a leader in the field of vocational and adult education. As early as 1911, provisions were made by the State Legislators to es- tablish schools for vocational training. The voca- tional schools have supplied a need in out educational structure that the other public schools simply could not meet. That need is becoming even greater to- day. New machines and automation have done away with most of the nonskilled jobs. The entire State will soon be divided so that each local school district is a part of a vocational school district. As the scope of the training offered in these schools has been widened to include two-year tech- nical courses that lead to an associate degree, the work of the local Board has also become greater. Long-range planning is more necessary than ever. Future needs in both equipment and buildings must be planned for as they continue to add new courses of study and keep those that have already been es- tablished up to date. To. be sure you qualify for a job tomorrow, get an education today! 4 l Our Director I want to extend my sincere congratulations to the students who have finished their required curriculum. You have set a timely example because the most important investment you can make in this world is the dis- covery and development of all your talents. This investment alone has equipped you to meet the challenge of modern technology. You are equipped to do a job--do it well--give your employer more than he is paying for and you will find the results rewarding in every way. Remember - education does not stop on graduation day. All of life is a time of learning and relearning. People who stop learning are handicapping themselves in two ways: They are not prepared to earn what they believe to be a satisfactory wage, and they cannot rise to the cultural and achievement level that would be made possible by increased knowledge and understanding. Strive for quality in your work, in your everyday life, and in your continuing education. Quality breeds self-confidence, an important ingredient in today's world. To the students who are leaving - good luck and report back often. To the students who are returning in the fall, we are looking to you for leadership in the year ahead. Supervisors At three o'clock on Monday afternoons, Mr. Richardson and his staff of coordin- ator, teacher-coordinators, and super- visors meet to discuss problems and policies of the school. It consisted of work on a keypunch, the sorter, the 402 Accounting machine, and the Collator. Today, in Room 101, you will also see the Reproducer, and the 604 baby Computer. By June of this year we hope to have a 1401 Computer, which is actually a big brother to the 604. C. T.l. now of- fers a two-year course in Data Processing Technology, which will train a student to become a computer programmer. Another first at C. T.l. this year was registration, recording attendance, and inventory control by means of data proces- sing. Here we see Mr. Boots' No. 1 help- er, Betty Helke, recording information on the IBM cards. ff -fs-131111 -A -mf 1- u ,ra ' H tg: Qf'..!! ?.9is- ,- 991 '? In their initial season in the WTCC. the Cavaliers finished in third place. Highlights ofthe season were the victory over Mad- ison at the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium. which avenged in earlier Cavalier defeat at Madison, and a fantastic come-from-behind victory over the LaCrosse State Uni- versity Freshmen. In this latter game the Cavaliers over- came a twenty-point deficit in the final eight minutes to come away with a 92-90 victory. Personnel-wise, the Cavaliers were led by 6' 10 center Gary Addis who scored 419 points in eighteen regular season games for an average of 23. 3 points per game. Other standouts on the squad included the Cava- liers' fine guard combination of Bob Ducklow and Roger Misch. Leo Fronk, a fine forward. started the season slowly but came on strong with a fine 29-point perfor- mance in the victory over the L. S. U. Frosh. Dennis Er- penbach and Tom Peek split starting time at the forward position with both of them performing more than ade- quately. Fine bench strength was present in the form of Jim Haines, Steve Schmaltz and Mike Neumann. Head Coach Dean Morton was ably assisted by Assistant Coach Don Witt and Student Manager Duane Volden. Their third-place finish for the season in the WTCC earned the Cavaliers a trip to conference's invitational tournament at Racine on March 3 and 4. .1 ,A :nw J 'fu' 1, if I gg . -Y: Will it or won't it? It is the clearing house for all school activities of the clubs, fraternities, and other organizations. It is the students' voice to the administration on school policy. They plan activities and give suggestions to the adminis- tration on matters concerning student welfare. It meets weekly. with meetings open to all students. Some of the year's activities sP0l1S0Fed by the Student Congress have been monthly dances, the annual Sweetheart Dance, a stunt show, student loan fund campaign, and a school variety show. The technical fraternity was formed in order to develop a better understanding between the technical students and the rest of the student body and the faculty. It is open to Students of Electronics, Drafting, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. and Automotive Technology. Each year the fraternity has a Pledge Week for all those wishing to join. This year we had four pledges. They each had to make a paddle accord- ing to specifications and carry it with them during school throughout Pledge Week. They also carried a shoe shine kit and a name card. The pledge was expected to call all active members by sir and perform any duties that the active members might desire. They were considered active members after a quarter. A formal initiation was held at the Party House at the end of the first semester. This year Delta Eta Tau joined with the other organizations at C. T. I. to sponsor the annual Sweet- heart Dance under the direction of the Student Con- gress. This Dance has been one of the highlights of each school year. For the past three years Delta Eta Tau's candidate for sweetheart has been the queen. The Club is recognized as a co-curricu- lar activity to the marketing program. Vocational understanding, civic consciousness. social intelli- gence and leadership development stand out as the leading principles of the organization. In the 1966-67 school year the Coleman DECA club engaged in many activities to accomplish these objectives. The Club helped the Chamber of Com- merce carry out a survey of the wholesalers in the La Crosse area, helped build Man-Lay garden, ob- served national DECA week. Nov. 7-13, held a 54 banquet with a local businessman as guest speaker, sponsored a shoe shine to help raise money for the Student Loan Fund, attended the state leadership conference in Green Lake, attended the President's conference in Oshkosh, held many social events, and aided the evaluation of the marketing program by the State Board of Vocational Education. DECA gives the student an opportunity to view his studies on an informal level and thus gives greater strength to classroom learning. DECA is used as a tool to acquaint the businessmen of the com- munity with what Coleman Technical lnstitute has to offer. Richard Schmidt, John Wolff, and Larry Kurth received scholarships in Food Merchandising from David Nudd of the Gateway Grocery Co. Congratulations! CU' F ',.. v '4 Oomph-paa-paa!
