ITE CANOE RACES HELD AT WPCC Sewanee wins title By LARRY DALE Staff' Sports Writer GLEN ALPINE - Make it five in a row for the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. The school scored an impressive 301 points to easily outdistance all opponents and capture the fifth annual Southeastern Intercollegiate Canoe Races sponsored by Western Piedmont Community College. The 18-race contest was sponsored by the college in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees and the Rescue Squad. WPCC finished a distant second with 68 points. Only two points behind was William and Mary with 66. The Open classification, open to anyone who was not elligible for the intercollegiate class , was a three-way tie between Carolina Canoe Club, Louisville Paddlers Club and Nantahala Racing Club with 17 points each. Other finishes in the intercollegiate classification were Mars Hill, 18, Western Carolina University, 173 University of Tennessee, 15, Hollins College, 13g Old Dominion College, 12, Appalachian State University, eight and Sandhills Community College, one. In the Open classification the other finishes were: Tuckaseegee Outing I Club, 15 g Salem Racing Team of Salem, Va., 14, Blue Ridge Canoe Club, four and L 8: L Express, two David Benner led the point race for the WPCC team. He won the C-1 intercollegiate slalom and thie C-1 intercollegiate race. In the C-2 intercollegiate race he teamed with L.D. Cole for a first-place finish and joined with his father, Bob Benner, to finish second in the C-2 intercollegiate slalom.
