I am part of all that I have met Tennyson E I 5 1 r l l 1 vi, ,. , ,il JS' Our door is always open for students who come fully prepared for a confident climb up the academic ladder or doubting whether they can attempt even the first rung. Over the years, we have developed new skills of our own, and new programs, tailored to the needs and wants of the people in our community, regardless of their previous academic experience, whatever their age. Our objective, today, as always is to meet each student as an individual who is growing and changing in search of unique and personal idenity. - THE WPCC CATALOG - 16 TABLE OF CONTENTS IN RETROSPECT - MEMORIES OF PIEDMONT THE YEAR AT WPCC WPCC LEADERS STUDENT LIFE ON THE PIEDMONT HILL PIEDMONT PEOPLE FACES IN THE CROWD CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE COMMUNITY ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Lf- 2-16 18-53 54-95 96-130 131-144 145-185 186-199 200 We hope you all like the 1977 Ye bo k from your stance as much we o up here! L13-gl THE YEAR HOW WILL YOU PERCEIVE THIS YEARBOOK, 1977? 18 No one really knows Where science is taking us. We are aboard a train, racing down on a track on which there is an unknown number of switches T WPCC r ' ll lk leading to unknown places. Most people are in the caboose looking, backwards Ralph Lapp Imagine a long freight train going down a railroad track, with two different people viewing it. One person is standing on the ground, about three feet from the track, and he is staring straight ahead at the train, as it passes him. Basically all he can see is what is passing right in front on him, from momemt to moment. Another person watches the train at the same time, but he is not on the ground, but way high up in the air. In an airplane, balloon, or flying on his own he perceives the train in an entirely different way than the person standing on the ground does. Instead of seeing..the train only a little at a time, car by car, he perceives the whole train at once, and every car in it from the first to the last. Copyright 1976 by Richard N. Bolles, The Three Boxes of Life and How to Get Out of Theml 19 FILL OUT THE FORM REGIS A city of electricity With bodies of elasticity The twinkle of the wire Stimulates and makes one desire Wires, wires, computers and brains The world will never be the same Cards for this, cards for that No meat, no weight, definitely no fat Damn, Hell, abandoned from our place There never was such a thing as THE HUMAN RACE - Written at Registration, 1976 THE FUTURE IS NOT SOMETHING WE ARE GOING TO, BUT SOMETHING WE ARE CREATING. THE PATHS TO IT ARE NOT FOUND BUT MADE, AND THE ACTIVITY OF MAKING THEM CHANGES BOTH THE MAKER AND THE SITUATION. John Schaar TION x s , XX! XX x X XX ,, v , I- In August at a meeting hall, the people held a costume ball. Each wore a mask upon his face, and clothed himself in colored lace They stood in groups of three or four, And tapped their feet upon the floor And crossed their arms and blinked their eyes And from their mouths came predicted lies When the sticky, heated air Demanded more than he could bear One of them slid his black mask down And bared his face from chin to crowng And when they saw his naked face They seized and dragged him from that place And turned and barred the heavy door And shook their heads and crossed the floor - Don McNair - ,...--f r . f L r Tick tock the hands move fast Tick tock the hands move slow Tick tock which way will they go? State, Local, and National elections highlighted the months of October and November. Piedmont people got involved. One instructor was elected to the State Senate and another was elected a County Commissioner. Another ran for the County Commissioners. A fourth was Governor Hunt's campaign manager. Politics was highlighted by Governor Hunt's visit to the campus, the mock election, and the involvement of the WPCC YDC. All this shows that there was involvement in a year when the first southern President was elected since 1848. POLITICS The YDC sponsored a visit by Lt. In a vote of 268 to 126, Carter received 64.1 per cent of the votes to President Ford's 30.1 per cent. Eugene McCarthy lead the 24 write-in votes with a total of eight. Jim Hunt won a large victory over David Flaherty in the N.C. gubernatorial election by outscoring his opponent 290 to 109 votes, a 70.6 to 26.5 per cent margin. One set clings to safety and defensiveness out of fear, tending to regress backward, hanging on to the past, afraid to grow . . . afraid to take chances, afraid to jeopardize what he already has, afraid of independence, freedom, and separateness. The other set of forces impel him forward toward Wholeness of Self, toward full functioning of all his capacities, toward confidence in the face of the external world at the same time that he can accept the deepest, real, unconscious Selfv. - Abraham Maslow - GRADUATION CONFRONTS EACH STUDENT WITH THIS CHOICE. Why everybody knows, weire sick and only drinking so as not to be pained. For the 40 years I been drinking 'round Morganton I'm ashamed to tell you how miserable people've been about it. It's high time the city fathers was concerned with our problem. It ainit like we wasn't prominent citizens, especially Saturday and Sunday mornings. Dear Editor: We represent the many men who favor the ERA Amendment. To a man we are the losers in paying alimony and child support. Why should we pay? Passage of the ERA will lift the yoke from our necks. Thanks, The Oppressed Sex Where There Is More To Radio 1430 WMNC MORGANTON 92 WMNC-F M Dear Editor: The only security in these troubled times of epidemic divorces we women have is knowing we can stay home and raise our children, even if the family should otherwise split-up. Why shouldnit the bums that shirk their other responsibilities have to support us? Sincerely, The Security Sisters Dear Editor: I am a disabled veteran and I really hate the dirty card-burning cowards that got Presidential pardon. Iim going to school on the GI Bill and will keep going 'cause there's no jobs outside and I can manage on what the government sends me for going to school. Sincerely, Lyncher Dear Editor: c There haint' no respect of-a-day or of-a-nite for good ole boys no more, except Billy Carter. We git hassled at the places we gather for a little beer-drinking and card-playing. But Billy don't - even when you see the dice roll on TV. If we race after the first tire truck to help out our local volunteer fire department we git catcalls or fist-shaking from the public. Hit's just a shame what kinda abuse the good ole boys gotta take. Deesgusted Not Red Neck Dear Editor: I am sick and tired of the way this town does not provide for single people. There is no place to go, no decent eating place, and no way to meet others. I do not intend to get married, but must I always be an outcast in this town? Signed, Single Sally 133 Variety Vacationland North Carolina is frequently touted as the variety vacation land. This theme has a strong reflection in the WPCC activities curriculum. Physical fitness and structured leisure are aimed at on the campus. One can become a well-rounded sports person by conscientiously pursuing, in only two short years, these activities. The more nature-minded can indulge in the courses: Fit Trek, Mountaineering, Basic or Advanced Canoeing and Bicycling. The social set can perfect skills for competing on the putting greens in Beginning or Intermediate Golf and prepare to leap the net with winning grace in Tennis. If, perchance, your skills in horseback riding were overlooked in childhood, one can recapture that opportunity by enrolling in an Equitation course. There is also the lure of Beginner's Swimming for water babies. The more sedate or meditative nature lover can become an accomplished spring wildflower appreciator and spend a weekend in the pursuit, somewhat like Stalking the Wild Asparagus. In other words we are offered activities that nearly challenge the Outward Bound School. We certainly adhere to the western tradition of working hard at our leisure! 134 , , 'gifwix . 1 : 4r.Yl,.,!,-mg. , ,wi H 'Q .xl ..,.v . .M i,::,:..x...:n Z W-Xu mx Nu... .,,.:Zi.!tA.f::.l..i-It 3.4. til...-'gil 7'9 -1 lf V ' ' wg.l5.fM --1 iff,- ...J .. -Y ,.-f l,,,. i., ,, V45 4 H+:-,,,!,..',ggm,.,..,i Q- U - -, m4,'.f1,...4y i q 4 ,gl .1 yr.. fy M5 .' A A5434 eel: , If AJ ,. , 135 Famous Lecturer Visits WPCC INTERVIEWER What is the most important change you see the new Administration having on the social front in Washington, Mr. Goober? Goober: Well, now just a minute there. Several people have used words like front and seige when they've asked me questions about the Carters in Washington. This ain't a dad-burn war zone up here, is it? Int: Well, frankly it wasn't when the Fords live up here. But there arecertain things that are sacred to the social strongholds, er, social set I mean that have defied change for two hundred years and the leaders in society feel somewhat threatened at the lack of formal proprieties that seem to flourish around the Carters. Goober: Why has it got to be so formal - this is the place where opportunity lives and now they can let their hair down for good. It does not have to be a competitive, ethnocentric political playground for the privileged. We're gonna let y'all be good ole boys too. Before long I bet there'll even be some born-again among the brothers. Slight shudder from the Interviewer. 136 Q But, Mr. Goober, it is not desirable to those with the political and social clout to have a sub-culture thrust into the works of a finely honed social structure that has Weeded out the poor ambitious, the social riffraff, and all but the artistic, amusing eccentrics so successfully To overcome these precedents would ambush the faith of the hopeful, the wealthy, the aristocratic. And I don't mind saying, to be overcome by Peanut Power would be both humiliating and set a dangerous international precedent. Goober: We're aching for a reformed world image anyhow. And you talk like aristocracy stops with the Mayflower Yankees. Why, y'all were up here trying to grow rocks under 5 feet of snow when we were enjoying a lucrative Southern society. 'Course the great Wahr was only the beginnin of that trouble. Anyway this is gonna be the second best thing since grits. Int: Whatls the first best thing since grits then? Goober: Ahem! You just aren't lustin' hard enough for knowledge if you hafta ask that. ,QQ 9 '. ,,', ., aw ,, , g?HQs 'i'.'. The college curriculum leaves no sandbag unturned to provide something for everyone - male and female. Today's girls can really get into weight-lifting. And if they adhere to instruction can get out of it with trimmed figures and no lasting injuries. Some of the most attractive females on campus are also going to be the strongest. You can learn to cut a wake as nicely as a Mark Spitz and do tumbling and gymnastics rather like an Olga Korbett. For the overall effect there's straight physical conditioning or Health, which presumably incorporates facets other than sheer physical effort. Yoga is available for those who don't care to dare the brute athletics. Geared to bring the best out from inside and opening all kinds of doors to a more stable psyche and body. 138 'ffl HX , a , , Q t w h Magi-M ., The Fancy of Fashion The in of today is evident everywhere on the WPCC campus. There is no lack of equality in dress here. Everybody seems to be in jeans, jackboots and flannel shirts these days. And surprisingly one can still tell the boys from the girls. Perhaps some of the uniform-ity is due to the wicked winter we've had. But the look is the same on campuses everywhere as it is here. Jeans have been the hottest staple of the garment trade for several years now. And every season the big name designers scatter omens of doom for denim. But somehow they shout less loudly and less often now. Practicality, cost and comfort seem to be an unbeatable combination that lasts. And lasts. Guys are sweater suave this year with some really smashing knit pullovers. While the gals are competing and repeating those supercasual combos of long johns undershirts with a fancy fashion flannel plaid. if 151-1' 1- 1-, V: . . ,rpzw . ., . -f YJ'-gf x f A, 'ilmd -L . .f r. i. 7. If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. W began with a staff of one person and a new advisor. Dick was the staff photo grapher last year and became our able editor. Richard had little experience as a advisor, but he did have vision and enthusiasm. Somehow we gathered a St during the summer, but it seemed at first that the Staff changed every week. The it began to take shape, and the faithful emerged. Reba, John and John workin in the dark room to see what developed., Dick, Phyllis, and Karen trying to d layouts on time. Jennie, Peggy, Jolene, and Sheila getting ads, often from the sam place. Who could forget the comedy of errors in getting the photo proofs here? O the trip to Hunter Publishing Company? Or all the sweat, tears, anger, joy, frustra ' tion, anxiety, and iinally jubilation when it arrived. In all faimess, we dedicat the 1977 Happening to ourselves. - THE STAFF - I 77 I I J5Ia'fI n .L . ,, y :J-'fx QF: ' H mf U 1 z 'S 7 Fra -vIlII --A I. . .I II I J- '--. 1, .
