President Lieuallen Dear OCE Students, It is the privilege ofthe college president to write a few paragraphs to be recorded in the Grove expres- sing his greetings and good wishes especially to the graduating seniors but to all members of the student body. Contemplating what might be Written, I recalled that almost exactly fifteen years ago I first visited this campus and became a member of the College faculty. During these fifteen years, the first nine as Registrar, I learned to love the College and the setting in which it resides. I have seen OCE grow from less than 300 students to its present enrollment of nearly 1500. During those fifteen years the faculty more than tripled in numbers and improved vastly in training and experience. The Library, two additions to the Campus School, swimming pool, Maaske Hall, Music Building, Student Center, and now the new dormitory were constructed. And, most impor- tant of all, the curriculurns were expanded to include liberal arts degrees, secondary teacher education, and grad- uate programs. It is a temptation to reflect on those fifteen years as golden years and to speculate that the future will be anti-climactic. Better judgment, however, cautions me that the past is merely prologue. Now students, soon as graduates, you will help to create a future vastly more exciting and challenging than the past fifteen years. I face that promise with you - and I face it with eagerness and with excitement. R. E. LIEUALLEN President N , E Dean Donald Duncan You have accepted the great challenge--that of con- tinuing your education as you move toward your own unique goals. I trust that we have mutually created a climate that was condudve for maximum intellectual and social growth which is necessary in a free society. As you progress in your chosen profession, let us utilize our respective strengths to aid OCE in the years ahead. Donald Duncan Dean of Men 'Pi- Director of Student Affairs Art Glogau ins. Dean Sall Edmiston One desperate urgency, it seems to me, in this des- perate and urgent age, is the need for educated people. I trust that your experiences at OCE have provided you with the means of proceeding toward that which you might become. Sally Edmiston Dean of Women The experiences of intellectual, social, and emotion- al growth in college will result in a keen and unique loyalty to OCE. This school spirit lasts long alteryou leave college, and maintains enthusiasm for OCE throughout Oregon. Art Glogau Director of StudentAffairs '7'- . Receiving its impetus from a highly successful homecoming with Rose Krautscheid as Homecoming Queen, the class enthusiastically dealt with the details of graduation: graduation picture taking, ordering announcements, and frankly checking with the registrar's to see if enough credits had been earned to graduate in June. As the Class of '62 looks back they can recall many events that will live in their memories. It was the Class of '62 that started the freshman tradition of signing their names in tg cement sidewalk. Their freshman year Rose Krautscheid was Most Eligible Spinster and Jim Buck was Freshman Class Commissioner. During their sophomore year they were ably led by Larry Axmaker. During their junior year under the leadership of Bob Ellis they helped sponsor the junior-Senior Prom. Bob Ellis represented the class in the Ugly Man contest. The Class of '62 passes into thealumi circle, behind are many conquests and ahead new horizons. Hanging Of The Greens Chet Dugger presents Mrs. Lieuallen with wreath. 136 Student council members mrol at Dr. Lieuallerfs home Dr. Roy E. Lieuallen 1 E, 1 FRONT ROW Barbara, age 105 Margaret, age 9. BACK ROW? Doug- las, age 15g Mrs. Lieualleng Dr. Lieualleng Scott, age 13. Dr. Roy E. Lieuallen obtained his B.S. from Pacific University in 1940, his M.S. from the University of Oregon in 1947, his Ed. D. in 1955 from Stanford and his L.H.D.from Pacific University in 1959. Dr. Lieuallen came to Oregon College of Educationin 1946, became president in 1955 and served in that position until his appointment as chancellor ofthe Oregon State System of higher education in the fall of 1962, During the six years he served as president, O.C.E. acquired a statewide reputation for having come of academic age. All too often a college president's stature is measured by irrelevancies - his availability as a public speaker, the amount of concrete poured on campus, the dollars acquired for this study and that project. Dr. Lieuallen, however managed to prove that the essence of a college's meaning is not Portland cement or the principle of feedback, but rather that a college is first and last a place for people with ideas and questions. In 1955, fewer than a dozen persons on campus held a doctorate. Today a faculty of 1 10 boasts 40 such doctorates, sprinkled liberally throughout all of the departments. In this category, O.C.E. now ranks inthe top 10 percent ofthe nation's teacher-training institutions. Moreover, a talented and energetic group of younger faculty members has been equally important in leavening the intellectual atmosphere of the school. Under Dr. Lieuallen, other areas of the college were strengthened as well. O.C.E. is developing one of the finest small college libraries in the Northwest. The curriculum has been altered so that O.C.E. now offers more courses in solid subject matter, and less in ed- ucational methodology, than ever before. An athletic poliqf based on scholarship rather than garnemanship has pointed the school towards leadership in physical education. Also, the college has an Honors program for undergraduates which was launched in 195 8. By insistin on and encouraging intellectual vitality here, Dr. Lieuaien accomplished much towards establish- ing a philosophic rationale for the future of teacher- training in Oregon. 137 .Y1mhi!B-EBIIU5 L ife Campus Candxds. .f 'ST' Don t just sit there! ' 70 64 Zwmiri' St. Margins 'Spa A Lost -5 Head Basketball Coach Robert McCullough The Mighty Mites of Oregon College fought their way through 16 conference games and eight non-conference contests, winning a total of seven and losing 1 7. The Wolves , with their tallest starter at 6'1 and a starting five averaging between 5'10 and 5' 11 battled the taller opposition right to the wire in most instances, and at least seven of the losses were in doubt until the waning moments of the game. Carrying the brunt ofthe OCE attack were juniors Toby Wolf 1516 pts.J, Steve Rankin 1242 pts.J, and Bob Marr 1236 pts.j. The defensive efforts was spear-headed by such stalwarts as senior Larry Nye, and junior Lloyd Cole and sophomore Lee Land. The outlook for next year's campaign could be very bright with the addition of a couple of consistent rebounders to go with the very f'me- returnees from this year's Fight- ing Wolves . This year OCE basketball players fared well in all-conference nominations. This year Toby Wolf was placed on the first string all-conference team. Steve Rankin received the honor of being placed on the second team. Bob Marr and Lloyd Cole received honorable mention. Toby Wolf receives All-Con- I ference Award. 1 ' Senior Larry Nye. T. Curry T. Only five lettermen reported to coach john Easter at the beginning of the season. Of these Duane Kent and Bill Alberts managed to make it through the season without getting injured. Captain Stu Bye, Francis Tresler, and Dwight Reinwald the other experienced men on the squad, were injured through the season and never approached their potential. Faced with this manpower shortage the Wolves relied on newcomers Don Hopps, jim Trierweiler, Bill Pitts, Wally Kropf, Randy Hammer, Tom King, and Rudy Sonnen. Season team victories were posted over Linfield College 27-5, and 32-5, Pacific U. 21-9, and Eastern Ore- gon College 19-11. Individual honors during the season went to Duane Kent who placed 4th in the Oregon Intercollegiate Tournament 115 pound division, 2nd in the Oregon Collegiate Conference 115 pound division, and repeated as the N.A.I.A.
