Nicholas Nidell Nlr. Nicholas Nidell has been at Western Oaks since its beginning six years ago. This is his second year as the Principal, after serving as Assistant Principal for four years. Before coming to Western Oaks, he was in the social studies depart- ment at Putnam City Central. Under his leadership Western Oaks has continued to grow, both in size and educational quality. He has implemented many new and different programs, and has acquired many new teaching devices, such as the audio-visual tape recorder camera and a 37,000 laboratory for reading and foreign language. He is a conscientious educator who has continuously encouraged the students to become responsible and useful citizens, both at school and in the community. Administrators Encourage Students To Take Part in School Activities lVlr. Tom Vandemeer has been the Assistant Principal at Western Oaks for two years. He is not a newcomer to Putnam City, however, because he taught and coached at Putnam City High School when he began teaching 15 years ago. He has worked hard to help plan the school activities and to schedule the events in such a way that more students are able to participate in various projects and attend school functions. One of his major objectives is to help encourage students to behave themselves so that they will not be deprived of all of the opportunities that are offered at Western Oaks. Counseling Facilities Expand With School Growth When Western Oaks opened six years ago, there were 1019 students enrolled. This year there are almost 1500. One counselor was sufficient to take care of the students when the school opened, but the counseling duties have increased steadily, and three counselors were required to take care of so many students. Not only were more counselors necessary, but a new room had to be provided for them and their secretary, lVlrs. Mary Lee Wooden, and their aides. The counselors stated their purpose for being there as follows: To help students to make the best possible ad- justment academically, socially, and emotionaIly. They are not just schedule changers as some students may think. They give each student in school an ability test, grade them, score them, and strive to place each student in subjects and levels where they can work best and achieve. After the testing program, they discuss the scores with each student and counsel them accordingly. Personal problems are also taken care of as well as re- feral for specialized help, such as psychological counseling, and arrangements for parent-teacher conferences.
