What il ear WARRIOR Volume 6 PUTNAM CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT Bethany, Oklahoma Published by Western Oaks Junior High Yearbook Staff Every year Western Oaks has grown larger and more-classrooms are needed. This year 6 new temporary buildings were placed on the west playground for extra space. Western Oaks Grows With Pride This is Western Oaks Junior High's sixth year, and the enrollment and classroom space is steadily expanding. The 1968-69 enrollment increased by about 200 students and the total number reached 1476 shortly after the beginning of the year. Temporary building have been built for the overflow of classes- Three rooms of the elementary building are being used for junior high students, and the cafeteria is being used all day long for study halls. Twelve additional teachers were required and the total number oh the faculty is sixty, plus three counselors. Twenty four of these teachers are new to Western Oaks. This year, as always, the Warrior's goal is to make this the great- est school there ever was, and all Warriors will probably agree that this goal has been reached. The yearbook staff has tried to give complete coverage of the activities and happenings of the school year so that you will have a book of memories that you can own with pride. We hope you have as much fun reading your book as we did in making it. --The Warrior Yearbook Staff TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration ......... Faculty ............ Personal ities ........ When it became necessary to enlarge the counseling facilities, the counselors were moved to a new ofhce with more three full time counselors. room for One of the biggest projects which Mr. Falkner undertook was the building of the new Student Council Sugar Shack. Yearbook Dedicated To Student Council Sponsor Mr. Falkner helped the Student Council purchase a printing press which is placed in the shop room. He and Mr. Land- reth supervise a group of boys who are learning to operate it. At Christmas time Mr. .Falkner worked with Mrs. Stover to prepare packages for the soldiers in Viet-Nam. We, the members of the Western Oaks yearbook staff, gratefully de- dicate the 1968-69 Warrior yearbook to lVIr. Joe Falkner. lVlr. Falkner, who teaches 8th and 9th grade metal shop, has taught here for 6 years, since the opening of the school. He has been an outstanding sponsor of the Western Oaks Student Council and has helped to make the schoolractivities really great. We think he is a very deserving teacher who really tries hard to consider the interests of the students. Mr. Falkner is always handy to help Patty Ridings and Mike Off, who run the Sugar Shack. We wish to thank him for encouraging the Student Council to make this the best year ever and for dedicating his time and efforts to us, the student body of Western Oaks Junior High Schooll. --The Warrior Yearbook Staff The Student Council converted one of the old candy booths into a Lost and Found' booth which Dixie DePron opens each day with Mr. Falkners 's help. School Doors Open at 8.15 Boys and girls can be seen arriving at school from many different directions but the biggest mob comes from the Glen Oaks Shopping Center. Most students come to school by bus. Some students prefer to wait at one of the side doors before school, such as the gym door or by the north stairway. Nicholas Nidell has been at Western Oaks since its beginning six years ago. This is his second year as the Principal, after serving as Assistant Principal for four years. Before coming to Western Oaks, he was in the social studies depart- ment at Putnam City Central. Under his leadership Western Oaks has continued to grow, both in size and educational quality. He has implemented many new and different programs, and has acquired many new teaching devices, such as the audio-visual tape recorder camera and a 37,000 laboratory for reading and foreign language. He is a conscientious educator who has continuously encouraged the students to become responsible and useful citizens, both at school and in the community. Administrators Encourage Students To Take Part in School Activities lVlr. Tom Vandemeer has been the Assistant Principal at Western Oaks for two years. He is not a newcomer to Putnam City, however, because he taught and coached at Putnam City High School when he began teaching 15 years ago. He has worked hard to help plan the school activities and to schedule the events in such a way that more students are able to participate in various projects and attend school functions. One of his major objectives is to help encourage students to behave themselves so that they will not be deprived of all of the opportunities that are offered at Western Oaks. Q r awLbwu4mg Each morning Mr. Nidell makes the day 's announcements over the inter-com system. Assistant Principal - lVlr. Tom Vandemeer Counseling Facilities Expand With School Growth When Western Oaks opened six years ago, there were 1019 students enrolled. This year there are almost 1500. One counselor was sufficient to take care of the students when the school opened, but the counseling duties have increased steadily, and three counselors were required to take care of so many students. Not only were more counselors necessary, but a new room had to be provided for them and their secretary, lVlrs. Mary Lee Wooden, and their aides. The counselors stated their purpose for being there as follows: To help students to make the best possible ad- justment academically, socially, and emotionaIly. They are not just schedule changers as some students may think. They give each student in school an ability test, grade them, score them, and strive to place each student in subjects and levels where they can work best and achieve. After the testing program, they discuss the scores with each student and counsel them accordingly. Personal problems are also taken care of as well as re- feral for specialized help, such as psychological counseling, and arrangements for parent-teacher conferences. The Trophy Case is used to display all awards, trophies, and special honors won by Warriors or Clubs. From time to time outstanding work or projects are placed there for all to see. Clubs Display Various Proiects Around School The Business Club encouraged all Warriors to send a Christmas card to a soldier in Viet-Nam. They had a bulletin board dis- play with the names and addresses from the newspaper posted on it. Each spring the hallways of Western Oaks are lined with cam- paign posters trying to gain votes for cheerleaders, Pep Club officers, and Student Council officers. M? . tg 95 mr' t , '-'- M t Tips on Good Grooming and personality pointers were printed on posters for the hallways by members of the Future Home- makers of America.
