' FRENCH CLUBS ' Af S , The eighth grade French students have developed a basic vocabulary which will enable them to enjoy and appreciate French. In the 9th grade, they will be taking French I for high school credit. To enrich class work, Mrs. Whatley, the sponsor, has ordered Chez nous, a French monthly magazine. The French clubs with the help of the Spanish clubs sponsored a bake sale at the basketball games and wresting matches so that they could earn money to sponsor projects, especially the Christmas French-Spanish Fiesta. 9th FRENCH CLUB: Bottom Row:N. U' .7 Studkd The Radio Club was formed in April,l966, for anyone interested in radio practice, operation, or general theory. Some of the activities include radio theory, construction of projects, practice with test equipment, and working on other electronic equipment. The Creative Writing Club was formed for students who have a knack for writing so that talented students may discuss original poems and stories that they themselves have written. The members seek to help each other improve their writing techniques by criticizing, evaluating, and studying different writing techniques. Motorcycle Club ' B Motu Sa The Cycle Club, a 20 member group at the beginning of the year, increased in size as more and more boys reached their 14th birthday and obtained their license. The club's purpose is to encourage motorcycle safety and to enforce regulations such as the wearing of helmets, and having mirrors on their cycles. Several cycle rallies were attended during the year and more are planned for the summer. Membership was encouraged by the police force as they recognize the club as an asset to our school safety program.

SPANISH CLUBS Gbuo. 1 . U 1 . U . f For the first time at Western Oaks, eighth graders were given the opportunity of enrolling in foreign language, either French or Spanish. The 8th g-fgde Classes were introduced to the basic conversational patterns of these languages as part of their preparation for language in the 9th grade. A The Spanish clubs engaged in various activities throughout the year, but the one which highlighted the year was a fiesta held at Christmastime in the cafeteria. The students sang Spanish songs, put on a skit, and enjoyed themselves in Spanish tradition, topped with a pinata party.
