For four long years, Mr. Garrison has served faithfully in his position as the principal of Western Oaks Junior High. All of us appreciate the fine work and strong spirit that he has dedicated to us. In times of trouble, as well as the good times, his great sense of humor has come shining through to make the Life of a Warrior a pleasant one. Three years of Freshman have already graduated from Western Oaks, and many things have been forgotten, but all Warriors shall long remember our fine principal, Mr. Garrison. 2 af , 'IU ,dioplag,ocFzaa.Zopi'cit... Since time passes and things change, we, the l966-67 yearbook staff of Western Oaks, have tried to capture for you the highlights of the school year. In the future, when your mind cannot serve to recall the events of the past, we hope this book of cherished memories will bring to life all the happy days of this school year. As time goes on and minutes turn to days, and days turn to years, a person will reach out to catch the things of the present and will look forward to the future, but quite often the events of the past are blotted out and darkened by the world's fast pace. Without a record of the school year, some of the spirit, plans, activities, and friends would be lost. ln future years, we hope that you will turn the pages of this yearbook and remember the events of 'l966-67 and reminisce all the fun and school spirit that this year held . Having taught for 16 years, he has been a friend to many students, and has gained the respect of all. Mr. Garrison has been the Principal of Western Oaks since its beginning in 1962. He graduated from Central State College in 1950. Later he earned a Master's Degree from Oklahoma University, and he hopes to receive a Doctor's Degree in Education from Oklahoma University this year. His job as a Principal is a difficult one, since he must deal with many problems and situations throughout the day but he handles them well, always keeping his sense of humor, even in the midst of unpleasant situations. It is through Mr. Garrison 's efforts that Warriors have such tremendous loyalty and school spirit, and under his leadership Western Oaks is a school of which we can be proud. '1l!'to.6e I U U Mr. Joe Garrison, Mr. Leo Mayfield, Principal Superintendant of Putnam City Schools Mr. Leo C. Mayfield has served as the Superintendant of all the Putnam City Schools since July, 1964. In his duties he oversees the activities of all of the Putnam City grade schools, junior high schools, and the high school. His main jobs are working with the Board of Education in the planning of curricular activities, the supervision of the cafeterias, and the hiring of all of the teachers who work for Putnam City. Mr. Mayfield graduated from Northwestern State College and later earned his Masters Degree from the University of Oklahoma. The students of Putnam City are proud to have such a fine Superintendant as Mr. Mayfield. He enjoys working with teachers and students, and we Warriors know that he is doing a fine job of keeping Putnam City Schools among the finest and fastest growing in the state. 10 Mr. Leon John, Western Oak's Counselor, is one of the best liked teachers in the school. He serves as a friend and guide to all students as he seeks to place them in classes where they will be happy. He makes himself available to counsel students who are in scholastic trouble to .see if they need extra help or need to change a class. Mr. John, who has been teaching for 30 years, graduated from Oklahoma University in 1936 and was awarded a Master's Degree from Oklahoma University in 1941. The only time he left teaching was during the war when he worked for the army doing defense work in Wichita, Kansas. For three years he was a rural teacher in Southwestern Oklahoma. For the next 10 years he was a combination high school principal and history teacher in the same area. For the last seventeen years he served as a high school principal in three different schools. Mr. John changed to guidance and counseling in 1962 when he came to Western Oaks. He said he loves his work here better than any of the other teaching he has done. Mr. Leon John Counselor Mr. Nicholas Nidell has served as the assistant principal of Western Oaks since its opening in 1962. The main job of Mr. Nidell here at Western Oaks is to assist the principal in various ways, especially in the handling of disciplinary problems and working with the faculty and administration to help them solve the many problems they encounter in running a school. Mr. Nidell, who was born in Europe, attended the University of Indiana before World War II and earned his Bachelor and Master's Degrees at the University of Oklahoma. Presently he is working on his PhD, also at Oklahoma University. Although Western Oaks is a fairly new school, it has accomplished a great deal and has established many great traditions in the past four years under the leadership of men like Mr. Nidell. The Western Oaks wrestling squad with the assistance of Coach Guilliams and Practice Teacher, Mr. Harris, have put in many long, hard hours of practice this year learning skills and wrestling tech- niques, and one of their biggest jobs was keeping their weight down. The tasks of the Student Council officers are not always the easiest, but the satisfaction of helping to make a better school makes all the hard work worthwhile. President David Cotton presides at all STUCO meet- ings, appoints committees, and is frequently called up- on to represent our school and to appear before the stu- dent body. Gayle Williamson, vice-president, presides over the meetings in Dave's absence and heads all committees. Secretary Sherryl Melrose plays an important role as she and Richard Click, treasurer, handle most of the paperwork involved in keeping an important organization such as Student Cotmcil running smoothly. Sherryl keeps attendance records, takes minutes at all meetings, writes letters, and gets them in the mail. Richard keeps the Council informed on finiancial affairs, counts and rolls money, and assists in bookkeeping. T0 the freshmen, we extend a last goodbye as they go to higher levels next year. We want to thank them for all the spirit they have shown throughout the year, and we wish them good luck as they advance in their future careers. To the eighth grade, we wish good luck as next year's leaders. We hope they realize the great responsibility, but wonderful opportunity they will have ahead of them. We feel sure they will do a marvelous job and will real- ly carry out the Warrior tradition in grand style. To the seventh graders we wish to give a word of en- couragement.
