A heated argument ensued from exactly Q2- 5 half-past three until a quarter after seven, when it was broken up by Mrs. .9 Mickelson, who knocked on the door and said that her husband had better ,Q E come right home, because she wasn't going to wait supper for him another 3 minute. fy Now the procedure of such an important occasion runs something like 5- this: 5 5 The faculty assembles in a body in the Corridor of Light Hall, and at Q 5 exactly thirty minutes after three makes a mad dash for Dr. Bower's room .V 5 and arranges itself in orderly rows. Ig Drl Bowden seats himself with that admirable ease of his, and, after 3. eyeing the best-looking faculty in six states, opens the meeting. Ladies and gentlemen, he says, a very serious condition confronts us. J' The faculty looks surprised. 5 Q It is a situation, Dr. Bowden continues, which demands our im- 5 mediate attention. Something must be done at once and that is the put- S 5 pose of this meeting. I have let the matter slide entirely too long as it is, jg: 5- but I have been too busy to handle it until now. Q 5 The faculty grows uneasy and begins to squirm. No one knows what g S their superior is hitting at. 5' f I have decided to present facts to you today, Prexy goes on. In 5' :gi brief, this is what I wish you to consider. The students at this college are Ki .lg consuming too many lollipopsf' .9 ,Q The faculty is shocked by this announcement but settles itself to thought- f 5 fully weigh the facts in the case. Q 5 From a questionaire which I circulated among the student body I 5' was able to gather this data. Last year there were 1,728 lollipops eaten by :S the students of this institution and this year there is an alarming increase J- ? to the amount of -49985. I have found that last year 64 people indulged 3 5 in the luxury and that at the present the number has risen to 98. This means, ladies and gentlemen, that each student of that ninety-eight is spend- ing twice as much money on lollipops as he did last year. Formerly he Wink Wh g spent 55150, now he spends 32.25. If this situation continues as it is- if ,Q the student doubling his consumption of lollipops. as each year passes-in 5' 3 ten years he will spend 351.00 That is the point I wish to consider. f Dr. Bowden looks expectantly at the faculty. Everyone is waiting for 5' S someone else to break the ice. Finally Dr. Mickelson rises to his feet. ii: 5 I don't see anything wrong with lollipops particularly, he says. My fi: f janet likes 'em. Then he resumes his seat. if A' If you will permit me to hazard an opinion, Mr. Kibby ventures, 5 5 turning red, I am inclined to believe that eating lollipops makes the girls .92 Q in this school a trifle stuck up. He stops there. Mrs. Rose begins to Q 6' wonder what girl would have the nerve to turn a nice young man like Mr. jg Kibby down. S Q On the contrary, Mr. Kibby, Dr. Caldwell says in that easy polite ij . way of his, I think it makes them much sweeter. Then he sits down. g 5 Atta boy, Doc. S 'Tm almost sure that it makes the kids here more stuck on each other, i 5 5' g CQHHCQMZQQQGQMQQHHGQHMMQBQCQQQ QMQMCQ' Vekhgbhhhhhiahgbhhhhhhhhkh Mhhhkhhhfehkhhhhhhhkb Page Ten

So I took one Q g of these lollipops over there to my laboratory and analyzed the thing. Why, g .9 people, it's perfectly harmless-much more than corn liquor which tends 5' , to harden the .... Q We are discussing lollipops, Dr. Bowden reminds him. 5- -5' Well, folks, as I was saying, continues the head of the chemistry g department, there is nothing particularly wrong with a lollipop. It's tnade g ' of nothing but the purest sugar and water and flavored with al little fruit 5' juice. He returns to his chair. gi ig What kind of a fruit is chocolate? Dr. Bowden wants to know. 5 fl: tHe knows his lollipopsj. 5' There is certainly something to the stuck-up-tive-ness of the lollipops, ii ' Dr. Thompson has the floor. When I receive themes from my rhetoric 5 .S class, the papers are so sticky I have to wear gloves in order to read themf' 5' Dr. Distad, rises. I think it was splendid that you were able to 5 5- evaluate the results of your questionaire in such a concise way. But I Q 5' think that an attempt to abolish lollipops would be too radical a 5 ii: step. It is my opinion that the 5' S movement should come from the 'A' ' 5 ' students themselves. GEM :Xl The faculty nod their heads in 5 if rreement. 5' ,Q Before we do anything, Mrs. E g Vincent says, looking straight at :gl -5' Mt. Paul C. Shelly, I think each J' Ig: member of the faculty should swear ff 'gi never to eat another lollipop. I'm 5' -21 sure none of us do now, however. 5 ig: The faculty agrees again. S ft- There follows a long discussion Ig: 1 about whether it is advisable to 5 6, send another questionaire among 32 ' the students again, and I don't have J' long enough words in my vocab- f gi ulary to put down what is said. Dr. Q Bowden hastily appoints a commit- gf ., tee of two cons QDr. Bower and 5' ' Mr. Amyj and two pros fDrs. g 5 Mickelson and Caldwellj to present g 5- their idea before the next convo- 5 'S' cation of the student body.
